Lilias Day Organisers Start Planning For
2016
Following the cancellation of this years festival due to adverse weather, the Lilias Day organising
committee will focus their attention on the 2016 event to ensure its long term future.
Graeme Stockton, chair of the Lilias Day Committee, said: “After a careful assessment of both
financial and human resources it became clear that we don’t have the time, manpower or funds
to re-organise the event again this year. We will therefore refocus our efforts on ensuring we are in
a financially stable position and operationally prepared to ensure an even bigger and better event
next year. We have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and understanding we’ve
been lucky enough to receive and would like to thank the community, groups, businesses and
organisations for this”
He added: “We know that a huge amount of effort goes into the preparation for the day, especially
those who had prepared to decorate floats and houses and to those who had a special role for the
day. We greatly
appreciate
those efforts
and hope you
they will be able
join us with the
same dedication
next year”.
Despite the
conditions,
the traditional
visit to Steeple
Square in
the evening
went ahead.
Kilbarchan Pipe
band led the
procession and
the new Miss
Lilias, Victoria
Thomson
carried out her
first duty by
Crowning School Queen, Millie Spence
crowning the
school queen, Millie Spence. Victoria also drew the £1000 prize raffle which was won by a young
Kilbarchan couple.
Miss Lilias and the School Queen and their attendants have also been lined up to take part in the
Kilbarchan Show on Saturday 27th June where they will present the prizes on the day.
A campaign has been set up by a Kilbarchan resident to raise funds to help cover the financial losses
on the day. If you would like to donate go to Seona Hart’s crowdfunding page on Justgiving.com and
Brighter Bridge of Weir
Never A Dull Moment
By the time this edition of the
Advertizer is out, Midsummer’s Day
will have been and gone, and as we
put this piece together, the day before
the Advertizer’s July deadline, it’s dull,
damp and positively cool outside.
Fortunately, Bridge of Weir Gala Day was dry and even,
occasionally, sunny. Brighter Bridge of Weir has a load of
people to thank for their help that day, which is always a
big part of our fund-raising activities. Special thanks are
due to Beaton Brothers and Donald Blair of Alexander Barr
who, as usual, sponsored our Strawberries and Cream
stall. And to the ‘weel-kent’ Sandy Clark, not a member of
Brighter Bridge of Weir, but a regular at our Clean-Up days
and our Tattie-Bogle family stall too.
Speaking of the Tattie-Bogles, the name of
Gryffe’s new wee sister is Violet. It’s probably not
surprising that so many flowers names featured
in the loads of suggestions we had. At the time of
writing it’s too early to say how much was raised
over the Day and in the lead-up, but we’ll publish
details on our Facebook page and website as
soon as we have them. Thanks to everyone who
took part in our competitions.
Meantime, work goes on and our volunteers will
be seen regularly throughout the village, topping
up the water, clearing the weeds and all the other
things that they do just for the love of it. We hope
readers will agree that Brighter Bridge of Weir
really does make Bridge of Weir brighter, whatever
the weather.
