Official Club sponsors
Notes from the Club
Good afternoon and welcome to the Hadley Stadium for the visit of Emerald Athletic.
I would firstly like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their fantastic
support so far this season, I know that everybody involved with West Bromwich
United appreciates everybody that support the club in any way.
It was fantastic to see the lads progress the semi final of the cup last week. The
cup dream still lives on at West Bromwich United and even though it was a little
close at times i know that all that matters is getting through to the next round and
with a little bit of luck were there!
My role at West Bromwich United is to try to improve the clubs media side, be it
via the website or the programme that you are reading today. It is so
important for any club big or small to take advantage of social media and
digital platforms and we can already see that this is something that our fans enjoy.
We have seen website hits increase over the last few months due to the excellent
content supplied by the club at all levels as well as the launch of the online programme
which has already seen over 1200 hits in it’s first
edition. It is pleasing to see that the media side is being well received by
internally and externally. In the future I know the club has some exciting ideas on
where it would like to take it digital platform and I am very excited to be part of
their ambitious plans
We welcome Emerald Athletic to the Hadley Stadium this afternoon knowing that
it will be a tough game. Despite their low standing in the table Emerald will give
us a testing afternoon if the fixture earlier in the season is anything to go by. If we
are to keep the promotion push going it is important that we make home advantage
count and push on for the three points.
Enjoy today’s game!
The Gaffers say...
Anyone connected with West Bromwich United – Chairman, volunteers, players,
supporters – has a right to hold their heads high with the way things have gone in
recent weeks. Being a club that is only 37 weeks old we cannot grumble at the
current success we are having. This is down to everyone that’s involved who takes
time out of their own schedule to help or be a part of the club.
We cannot and will not hide away from the fact that football is a result-orientated
business, we all know that and to achieve anything we need to be winning!
A positive performance today against a team who held us to a draw during an earlier
fixture this season is a must if we are going to stay in the run for the league
title.
We believe it’s a good time to meet Emerald, if we maintain our good form as of
late the pressure of players keeping their shirt will bring the best out of each
individual and will allow us to gain confidence going forwards to take all 3 points.
The players need to deliver, that is clear, with squad selection being tough as it is
there is no room for error if players want to keep their spot in the squad/team.
Emerald will arrive here with the confidence of a team who has taken points from
us already this season but I believe that is exactly what we need at the moment to
give us that “battle” mentality we have had over the past few games and not be
complacent when on the field.
WMRL Div 2 is a punishing league where anyone can beat anyone no matter what
league position you are in and it is up to us to approach the game with a positive
frame of mind and let our qualities, energy and desire dictate the outcome.
West Bromwich United is a club that thrives in moments of adversity and this is
another big game for us all, so let’s all go and put a real WBU performance in
today, on and off the pitch.
Hope you enjoy the game.
Club History
The first Season for us together, as Part of Greets Green FC, Kelly Hollowood was
appointed as under 8's Manager. We had 7 players registered with us for season
2009/2010
The following season we decided to split from Greets Green FC, to become our own
Club, West Bromwich United. It was a friendly split, and greets green helped sponsor
our new club for this season to get us up and running.
We were not always going to be called West Bromwich Uited. We thought about
calling ourselves, West Brom All-stars, Great Bridge Harriers, and West Bromwich
Harriers. But in the end we went with the name we still have to this day,
West Bromwich United!
The founders of West Bromwich United Football Club are:
Dean Hollowood -Chairman/Secretary
growing rapidly!
In the Spotlight
Match Report 19th February 2017 By Kelly Hollowood & Mark Davies
The boys were brilliant today and each and every one carried out the game plan to the letter.
That's what they can achieve when they are fully focused and all pulling in the right direction.
They totally dominated the opposition and were 4-0 up by the break. The change in formation
helped and gave them a little more freedom to express themselves.
The backline was solid and to watch them play out from the back is a joy. Nobody panicked and
the distribution was very good so hats off to Birdy, Junior, Johan and Naim. The two wing backs
really put a shift in today up and down helping in defence and creating in attack so well done
Josh and Ethan they'll both sleep tonight. Central midfield is such a key area with Corey
(Ronseal) breaking up the play like he does so well, Bam pulling the strings with the help of
Calum, Aaron and who can forget our debut boy Malakie, a massive congratulations to the
little fella! Then the man up top and I think (just my opinion) his best position, the position he
played for us two seasons ago, you can't argue with a return of 5 goals!
Well done to every lad today and keep up the
hard work.
Football, such a simple game!
WBU Under 11 Eagles
Match Report 26th February 2017 By Kelly Hollowood & Mark Davies
Today West Bromwich United won and the only result that mattered was the performance of
our boys. Unfortunately we witnessed an opposing so called coach /team with a win at all costs
mentality. "Cheats" never win and win at all cost coaches are only looking after their own
reputation at the expense of their own kids.
It has been confirmed that our primary school kids were versus high school kids, not all but the
majority of their team.
That's enough negativity what about the lads? I for one was extremely proud of every single
one of them. We played the game in the correct manner and we played as a team. Let's
mention them all.
Birdy in goal pulled off some incredible saves the most notable being the one that was tipped
over the bar after some incredible reflexes believe it or not he had a compliment from their
coach (probably the only one we got all day off him)! Our 2 defenders Johan and Junior were
great today and worked tirelessly but it wasn't about putting a shift in it was the clever bits of
play that will make that system work. It was good to see Johan carrying the ball out of defence
and making a pass and Junior calm under pressure and making himself available for the ball to
be played out from the back made all the better earning man of the match.
Just in front of our defenders was Mr Protector Corey who does what he always does getting a
foot in, breaking up play and generally being a nuisance to the opposition and gets us on the
front foot. In the center of midfield we had Bam and Callum, Bam swashbuckling as ever no
quarter given even if the opposition had just parked his car on the car park!! Another man of
the match performance from The Mr Versatile Callum who never lets the team down
whichever position he is asked to play, driving forward and showing real tenacity. Naim played
in an unaccustomed role today as right wing back but I thought he was a natural, did
everything a wing back should, got forward, defended and to top it off scored a great goal well
done young man. Josh played the left wing back role and shows incredible stamina for what is
required, had a couple of chances and threaded some great through balls.
Our man up top and Captain showed great maturity today running the front line nice to see
him holding the ball up and timing his runs. Azza as we like to call him came on and ran his
socks off on the right, and got involved and never gave up, good to see him wanting to run at
people never mind how intimidating the opposition. Last but by no means least the big man
Malachi went on and he also took ownership and fought for the ball with some nice little
interplay!
Can't speak any highly of the boys take that attitude into the remainder of the season and we'll
be OK.
United in Action
West Bromwich United made it through to the semi-final of the league cup after a deserved first
half performance.
After a scrappy win the week before WBU knew something else was needed to beat a team like
Warstones and that’s just what happened. What a half of football this was, possession, fast flowing
passing, creating deep holes and attacking at every opportunity. Warstones struggled to keep
the ball and contain the WBU midfield who were excellent with a slight change of formation
working in their favour.
The change of structure in the team proved its worth after just 20 minutes. Darren Lewis netting
his first for WBU since signing from Wondervolts with an accurate long range shot driven low and
beating the keeper to make it 1-0
The pressure continued and WBU just kept pushing. It was 2-0 not long after, some great individual
skill from Scott Broadway, as he found some space to fire home his 16th of the season even
after missing the first 6 games due to injury!
It soon became 3-0 eight minutes later when Scott Broadway who was a nuisance all game
showed a little trickery in the box and was hacked down by the Warstones defender with the ref
awarding a penalty. As we all know Ricky Kelly doesn’t miss penalties, slotting home to extend
our lead going into half time.
As the Second half kicks off it was clear Warstones wanted to get back into this game. Change of
formation for them throwing extra bodies up to close down the back 4 early and win possession
high up the field. This play was rewarded early second half as a ball over the top found its way to
the striker who calmly lobbed the ball over the home keeper to make it 3-1.
WBU stepped up under the pressure with THAT man again. Scott Broadway netting his 2nd of
the game with a sweet finish bottom corner to try and put the game out of reach and send us
through. However Warstones kept pushing and pushing. A mistake from Liam Haynes dropping
the ball from a cross gave Warstones another opportunity to pull a goal back making it 4-2.
WBU back four doing what they could against the harsh wind found it difficult to keep hold of the
ball which lead to a free kick just in front of the halfway line for Warstones. As the free-kick was
swung in (not sure if it was meant, but definitely taken by the wind) the ball somehow found
itself flying into the top corner of the WBU leaving Liam with no chance!
The score was 4-3 and WBU finally found themselves in a game with Warstones believing the
comeback was on.
Warstones kept attacking, pushing every available player up during the final moments! A cross
deep from the right wing with a player heading the ball back across goal but home goalkeeper
Liam Haynes (making his debut at 17 years old) pulling off spectacular save in the closing
stages to keep the score line in favour of West Bromwich United. 4-3 final score phew!
As we look back, we played a brilliant first half but we need to make sure we do not get complacent
and let teams back into the game, the game isn’t over until that final whistle blows.
