Notes from the Club
June 2016 was the start of a new football venture and team for both myself and the
other coaching staff of the WBU 1 st team in WMRL division 2.
From the start we had an enthusiastic group of coaches with various decrees of
experience. The set up was for Andy Parkes and Wayne Spicer to be head coaches
with Paul Thomas and myself as 1 st team coaches to assist. Only time would tell if the
dynamics of the group would work but it was a great starting point.
With the help of the other coaches Andy P installed a system of play together with a
method and routine for training to ensure all players took onboard what was expected
of them. Pre-season went well and we reduced the amount of players to a 25 man
squad to go into the friendlies
At the start of the season we had limited success with some disappointing results but
we maintained our beliefs and pushed the players at every opportunity in training. It
wasn't long before we started to see results improve and players’ progress, obviously
the training regime was paying dividends.
Over the months we have had a turn round of players with some new faces coming in
but not always making the grade. Training was kept at an intense level, using high
tempo drills but still practicing the fundamentals. Consistency was going to be our
greatest ally in achieving our goals.
Nine months later and although the squad has changed somewhat the fundamentals
that were installed are still there for all to see. The quality within the squad has definitely
increased which means great competition for the players and tough decisions
for management.
The progress of the team has been immense with some individuals excelling and the
team playing good attractive football, this has lead to some notable away results
namely Bewdley on a windy and rain filled night, Telford away with a 3-1 win and
most recently Allscott with a 4-0 win that ended their unbeaten home record plus the
score was flattering on WBU rather on Allscott.
With promotion in touching distance and a cup semi-final to play, the season will have
an exciting finish for WBU. I'm sure the coaches working with Parkes direction will
keep the players going and hopefully progress through to the final and gain
promotion. Success is sure to follow.
Enjoy today’s game!
The Gaffers say...
A warm welcome to everyone, especially to the supporters and management
associated with Broseley FC that have made the journey to Hadley Stadium for today`s
MWR League fixture.
In football they say the table doesn’t lie and now that we are reaching the end of the
current campaign, it promises to be one in which any team in the second division can
be involved in a promotion battle. A brilliant result in a friendly fixture where we
travelled to Bartestree FC last weekend. We had the opportunity to try/test two
different formations and involved all 24 members of the senior team. I believe that
this will put us in good stead for a tough fixture schedule for the remainder of the
season.
The first team squad we have here at West Bromwich United continues to develop,
which makes selecting 16 lads to represent the club on a weekly basis extremely hard!
A victory here today would see us move even further in front of rivals AFC Broseley
and keep us hot on the tails of Telford who currently top the table.
Sometimes we need to take the opportunity to reflect on what we personally feel is so
far a successful season. The performances of late have far outweighed the
expectations that we had set out at the start of the campaign. It’s a real credit to the
players and to everyone who works so hard to make sure we are fully prepared for
every game we go into.
Being Head Coaches’ at a fresh ‘start out’ club and only picking up 4 points from your
first 5 games at this level, is always hard. We’ve talked about learning from our mistakes,
but actions speak louder than words and if you have followed us from the start
then you will have seen a transformation within the club on and off the field. Currently
on the verge of promotion and with a possible cup final on the cards. All we can
do at this stage is say a massive thank you to everybody associated to the club. Your
hard work and willingness to go above and beyond is a real key factor to ensuring the
club is successful in all aspects of the game.
“Hard work, always prevails” something that these lads know all too well, always
putting the work in for the team and their own personal development, the football is
now beginning to flow and I can’t wait to see what next season brings for these young
talented individuals.
To all, we hope you enjoy today’s game i am sure it’s not going to disappoint.
Club History
The first Season for us together, as Part of Greets Green FC, Kelly Hollowood was
appointed as under 8's Manager. We had 7 players registered with us for season
2009/2010
The following season we decided to split from Greets Green FC, to become our own
Club, West Bromwich United. It was a friendly split, and greets green helped sponsor
our new club for this season to get us up and running.
We were not always going to be called West Bromwich Uited. We thought about
calling ourselves, West Brom All-stars, Great Bridge Harriers, and West Bromwich
Harriers. But in the end we went with the name we still have to this day,
West Bromwich United!
The founders of West Bromwich United Football Club are:
Postcards from Heaven
Now it’s not too often you get the opportunity to play teams in different leagues.
Especially at our level, so when Andy Thomas (or Hairy T as he’s know in these parts)
arranged a friendly with Bartestree in Hereford we knew it was a wonderful
opportunity for West Bromwich United.
Taking a 23 man strong team to Hereford gave First Team Coaches Wayne Spicer &
Andy Parkes an opportunity to look at all members of the team and play around with
formations and tactics that could see us in good stead for the end of season
promotion push.
West Bromwich United won the game 6-2 in what turned out to be a useful
afternoon for all involved. Bartestree took to twitter to congratulate us on the way
we went about the game and said it was excellent preparation for their own cup final
coming up shortly. We wish them every success in their quest of honours this season.
Hairy T also secured friendlies for the youth teams in proper West Bromwich United
fashion. These will be played over the summer and more information will be out
nearer the time.
Wbu on their Travels
Our official website had the opportunity to catch up with Joint 1st team Head
Coaches Wayne Spicer & Andy Parkes who said "It’s wonderful to have the
opportunity to play teams from other leagues and Bartestree have been more than
welcoming in arranging this fixture with us. Being a new club it’s wonderful that
teams like Bartestree are able to host us in their free weekends. We hope this is the
start of a good relationship between the clubs that could potentially see similar
fixtures during pre season. I would also like to thank Hairy T for arranging the fixture
at such a short notice."
A good day all round!
United in Action
With conditions perfect and the pitch soft the stage was set for WBU to avenge the heavy defeat
they suffered at the hands of Allscott in the reverse fixture. This top of the table clash was a must
win for both teams if they still harboured ambitions to win the league title.
WBU were on the front foot from the first whistle, having switched to a 3-5-2 formation, creating
the game’s opening opportunity within the first minute. It was clear that Allscott were struggling
to come to terms with the management team’s tactical change as WBU began to dominate
possession, with James Filkins seeing plenty of the ball early on. WBU were looking particularly
dangerous out wide where wing backs Sam Causton and Ryan Kingdom were overlapping to great
effect.
Allscott were restricted to long range efforts as WBU took control of the game and it was no
surprise when Scott Broadway opened the scoring on 17 minutes. Ricky Kelly was afforded too
much space in midfield and found his centre forward with an inch perfect pass, one that ‘Pirlo’
himself would have been proud of, allowing Broadway to lob over the advancing goalkeeper and
into the net.
Another sublime Kelly pass sent Daryl Westwood through one on one to make it 2-0 on the half
hour, a scoreline which, having dominated the game, did not flatter WBU at all.
The half time break couldn’t come quickly enough for Allscott and when the whistle was blown
the only surprise was that they were only two goals down.
The second half began with a much needed change of formation for Allscott who attempted to
match the 3-5-2 shape of WBU. This, however, had little effect on the game as the second half
followed a similar pattern to the first. WBU were now finding more freedom in the middle of the
pitch as captain Dave Richards continued to orchestrate things from his deep lying midfield role.
Although Allscott did briefly threaten with a long range effort against the post, the game was
over as a contest when Daryl Westwood again burst onto, yet another, Ricky Kelly defence
splitting pass to make the score 3-0.
With the game seemingly in the bag it became a chance for WBU to play the ball out from the
back with goalkeeper Dan Elwell having more passes to make than saves! Having formed a new
back three for the first time, Ashley Justin , Darren Lewis and Lewis Wemm now found
themselves with more time and space to pass the ball as Allscott rarely threatened.
Substitutes George Tennant, Anthony Nicholls and debutant Jack Whitehouse all made telling
contributions, highlighting the strength of the WBU bench, as the Allscott players began to accept
defeat. Having already wasted a plethora of chances to add to his goal tally, it was inevitable that
top scorer Scott Broadway would eventually find the net again, which duly arrived in the dying
moments.
Although the final whistle was greeted by high fives and handshakes for a job well done,
everyone agreed that 4-0 did not reflect the dominance of the performance. However, the
manner of this away victory, against a title rival, has given the team confidence for the remainder
of the season and the league title is still in their own hands.
Final score: Allscott 0 v 4 WBU
