From the Chairman
One word, WOW!
What a season it has been for West Bromwich United, this time last
year we finished with 8 teams all at grassroots level, with the plan to
get more females into football and the club, and to create an open age
Sunday team for men. Fast forward 12 months, we boast teams for
boys from Under 8's all the way to open age, a ladies team that have
seen their first season in the Birmingham County Women's League, a
great achievement for Lucy and the girls and of course our
senior squad, the 1st Team finishing runners up and winning the League
Cup in their first season. Who knows if we score enough goals today,
maybe even finish as league champions!
It’s been our best season to date with lots of positives to take away and
moments to look back on in years to come. So from Kelly & Myself to
every single player, parent, volunteer, sponsor and associate, we would
like to thank you for being part of this season, without you we would
not have achieved all of this.
Of course the work doesn't stop now. We have already began to start
planning for next season. Be it the expansion of our club with new
teams or just a different way for our teams to communicate, we are
already busy putting the cogs in motion for 2017/18.
Enjoy the game today, and hope to see you soon.
Best Wishes
Kelly Heeley (Vice Chairman) & Dean Hollowood (Chairman)
The Gaffers say...
Welcome to our final game of the 16/17 league campaign against
Wolverhampton United. May we take the opportunity to welcome our guests,
firstly the match officials, Wolverhampton United's management team and of
course all those connected with West Bromwich United. We Hope you enjoy
your afternoon and wish you all a safe journey home.
Our cup winning performance on Saturday was fantastic with every player
reaching a top level, we had commitment, desire and a huge competitive spirit.
It was a thoroughly deserved victory against one of the leagues strongest
teams who also had a lot riding on the game.
Here today 16 goals stand between WBU and the title. Is this achievable you
may ask? If the players step out onto the field with the same level of
commitment, belief and come together as a squad like they have, so many
times already this season, then nothing is impossible... a little bit of luck
wouldn't go a miss either.
With such a successful first season under our belts, gaining promotion and
lifting the divisional trophy Hadley Stadium and West Bromwich United will
now become the envy of a lot of the West Midlands league teams, however we
will not sit still! It’s the passion and drive of so many that have got us to where
we are today and we truly believe this season is only a stepping stone with
bigger and better things to come.
The support we have received has been second to none, West Bromwich United
is becoming more of a family than a football club and we hope that level of
support can be replicated again today in what might be our biggest crowd to
date.
We hope you enjoy today's game, thank you again for all your continued
support and we look forward to seeing you next season as we continue on our
journey seeking promotion yet again.
Club History
The first Season for us together, as Part of Greets Green FC, Kelly Hollowood was
appointed as under 8's Manager. We had 7 players registered with us for season
2009/2010
The following season we decided to split from Greets Green FC, to become our own Club,
West Bromwich United. It was a friendly split, and greets green helped sponsor our new
club for this season to get us up and running.
We were not always going to be called West Bromwich United. We thought about
calling ourselves, West Brom All-stars, Great Bridge Harriers, and West Bromwich
Harriers. But in the end we went with the name we still have to this day,
West Bromwich United!
The founders of West Bromwich United Football Club are:
Dean Hollowood -Chairman/Secretary
WBU Under 10’s & Under 11’s
Take away the goals we played pretty
well, just losing concentration going
forward and not getting back to help
defend and heads dropping, also
switching off at
corners and throw ins. Well done to
Nick on your 2 goals today. Today I
saw some good challenges from all of
you and some good runs with the ball
from Nathan just got to learn to
release the ball to a team mate.
Excellent game of football from the
lads. Listened brilliant, used what
was taught in training... didn't give
up !! Could not of asked for anything
else from them.
Well done Throstle's
WBU Under 12’s by Craig Williams
Today was an excellent performance in 1st half we took an early lead and was
well on top. We switched straight back on and scored from kick off to retake
the lead. We carried on playing football we planned closing down quickly and
working as a team. Sean (goalkeeper) pulled of a top class save which injured
him in process and to which I had to make the change of goalkeeper fair play
to Shay and Claidi who volunteered to go in goal. We kept pressing and going
forward and creating chances to which we scored and showed fantastic team
effort and attitude.
United in Action
CHAMPIONES!!!
Well that’s not bad for starters! With the club not even 11 months old the first piece of silverware is back
safely in the trophy cabinet and promotion secured with a game still to play. This astonishing start to the
history of this club will live long in the memory of all who have been part of it and it’s been a hell of a ride.
The atmosphere began to build well before kick off with live streaming of fans travelling to the game and the
confidence and determination of the players in the warm up was there for all to see. In fact, the birth of
something special was highlighted by the noise generated from the amazing support that arrived to cheer on
the team. As the teams made their way down the steps to the pitch, the banner waving, face painted, blue
and white army made their presence felt, filling the players with confidence and pride.
The team took to the pitch after another stirring team talk and armed with the details of the management’s
meticulous planning and preparation. The recurring theme throughout this wonderful debut season has been
how intense the training has been and how well planned and delivered the tactics, formations and knowledge
of the opposition has been communicated to the team. No squad in this league have been better prepared!
The game began with WBU in their usual formation of 3-4-2-1 and it soon became apparent that there would
be a clash of styles. Keeping possession from the off WBU were comfortable to pass the ball around, while
Telford wasted no time in sending long high balls to the edge of the box.
Ricky Kelly had the first shot of the match blocked and striker Scott Broadway had a header saved as WBU
settled the quicker. Telford made their presence known with some crude tackles and clearly tried to upset
the more cultured team with little off the ball tactics aimed at intimidating and bullying.
The direct approach began to cause problems and defenders Darren Lewis, Liam Cox and Lewis Wemm were
in for a busy afternoon dealing with an aerial bombardment from Telford. However, they were to fall foul of
their own tactics as centre back Ashley Justin opened the scoring from a set piece as Telford failed to deal
with a corner kick which fell just outside the box to
dangerman Ricky Kelly. After controlling the ball he sent in a searing volley which was blocked near the line,
only for the predatory instincts of the big stopper to kick in and dispatch the ball into the net. Justin delighted
in celebrating in front the Telford bench and meagre support who had previously subjected him some
pathetic abuse.
This seemed to increase the Telford determination to intimidate and more dubious challenges and dirty
tactics were in evidence as they attempted a comeback. WBU were dealt a blow with influential midfield
general James Filkins having to be withdrawn through injury. As devastating as it was for him and the team it
was heart-warming to hear the rousing reception he got from the young supporters on the terrace, a fitting
tribute to a wonderful role model, who was replaced by young midfielder Jack Whitehouse.
Telford made no excuses for their long ball approach and this was having some success. Time and again they
were getting in behind full backs Darren Lewis and Ryan Kingdom as the game hung in the balance. However,
they had not accounted for the man mountain between the posts, goalkeeper Liam Haynes. The young shot
stopper was having the game of his life blocking shots from distance and punching clear high balls into the
box. One save on the half hour was world class, instinctively diving low to his left to hold a goal bound effort
from the Telford winger.
18
By Paul Thomas
Telford were frustrated to be going in at half time with having not scored, but the calming influence again
from the WBU coaching staff ensured they returned to the field with renewed confidence.
The second half began with WBU looking the more assured and flying winger Daryl Westwood tested the
keeper before Ryan Kingdom shot over. The bullying tactics that had seen Telford all but claim the league title
did not have the effect on West Brom that it has had on so many other teams this season. This was never
more in evidence than the move which led to the second goal. Having pressed high and won back possession
the ball was played into Scott Broadway with his back to goal. Having brought it down beautifully on his chest
he out muscled the defender to turn and rifle a shot into the back of the net.
The game settled down as a contest from then on until Telford got a lifeline against the run of play. With
another long ball towards the far post the Telford winger managed to wriggle free and clip a shot into the far
corner to revive the Shropshire side’s hopes. This led to more long high balls dropping from the sky and a
heart in the mouth moment as the imperious Liam Haynes made another wonder save to push wide another
header after the ball coming back off the bar.
The corner, however, was to lead to the decisive moment of the game. Having been cleared to half way Ricky
Kelly showed a turn of pace even he did not know he had. Having just managed to beat the Telford defender
to the ball he had the presence of mind to play in Broadway to fire home and put the result beyond doubt.
WBU sent on the powerhouse Anthony Nicholls and Ferrari George Tennant to secure the game and both did
their jobs with aplomb. With the reassurance of play maker and captain Dave Richards moving into the
defence, WBU easily played out the remaining minutes and could have celebrated in style with a couple more
goals on the break as Telford looked a beaten team.
The final whistle was greeted with ecstatic celebrations as the young followers and the face painted fans
joined in the champagne spraying and dancing. Never has a club been more deserving of success with the
professional way that it has approached the season and credit must go to the chairmen, committee
members, matchday helpers and management for the standards that they have set and adhered to.
As the cup was hoisted into the air the thought passed through many peoples mind that this is to be the first
of many. With a talented young squad, clever coaching, meticulous management and wonderful support, the
foundations have been laid in a single season.
The future looks excitingly bright!!!
With one final league game to go against Wolverhampton United at Hadley Stadium on Saturday, WBU
require an almost impossible 16 goal margin to secure the league title. With promotion already assured the
team will have nothing to lose so don’t miss what is sure to be an entertaining, attacking game to end a
remarkable season.
Not sure what the odds are but it’s worth a cheeky £1 with this lot!!!
