HOW DO WE LOOK?
Curb appeal has a big impact on your property value, even if your home
is not for sale. Buyers evaluate the neighborhood, not just one house.
Stand back from your house and take a close look to see if it needs a
mini-makeover. Think about security as well. Has your shrubbery
become overgrown, covering windows or blocking the sidewalk? Do
low-hanging limbs obscure the front? Does the lawn have brown areas
or weeds? Is the siding mildewed or paint peeling? You may want to ask a
friend’s opinion; it is easy to overlook things we see everyday. Make plans
now to spruce up.
Cars that are parked in the street are also a turn-off to buyers. Make the
extra effort to keep cars in the driveway. It looks better and is safer for
your neighbors and your car.
MOST COMMON DEED VIOLATIONS
The Volume of letters sent regarding Violations continues to be an
increasing expense for the Copper Grove Home Owners Association. All
expenses incurred including postage to mail out fines, weigh seriously on
the assessments paid by each homeowner. We request your compliance
to help keep cost to a minimum and to keep our community as attractive
as possible.
TOP 5 VIOLATIONS
1. Leaving trash cans out in public view.
2. Not maintaining your yard.
3. Not maintaining your fencing.
4. Not maintaining your paint on your house/or mold on the siding.
PET OWNERS
Please be mindful to keep all dogs on a leash when walking them, to keep
the community safe. Also please be respectful of your neighbors and
clean up after your dog. First Service Residential gets a lot of complaints
regarding these issues.
HOMEOWNERS
Please DO NOT TAPE FLIERS of any kind to our metal fencing. It removes
the paint when the tape is pulled off. Thus they we need to be painted
before they start to rust.
SCHOOL NEWS
CFISD student filmmakers and actors wrap a day
of filming their short film, “Behind the Scenes,” at
Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union. The film, created by
Cypress Ranch and Cypress Woods students, is a
finalist in the Texas High School Shorts competition
at South by Southwest.
STUDENT FINALISTS IN SXSW
COMPETITION PARTNER
WITH CY-FAIR FCU
A film created by Cypress Ranch High School students,
“Behind the Scenes,” has been selected as a finalist
for the Texas High School Shorts competition of the
South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in Austin.
The fictional dark comedy film features a unique
twist on a bank robbery and was partially filmed at
the Cy-Fair Federal Credit Union Jones Road location
through a partnership with Cy-Fair FCU President/
CEO Cameron Dickey. Cypress Ranch audio/video production (AVP) teacher Dustin Boucher worked with student filmmakers Ricky Martinez, Jake
Billard, Sierra Marlborough, Blake Medlin, Paul Shank and Cypress Woods student Cami Beardmore to produce the film. Cypress Falls AVP teacher
Rakesh Jacob also helped collaborate on the effort.
As part of the partnership, the students also worked with Cy-Fair FCU to create a commercial promoting the credit union’s new virtual teller machines
(VTMs). CFISD teachers Boucher, Jacob, Butch Stephens of Cypress Park, Sherry Frank of Cypress Falls and Lori Andrade of Cypress Woods assisted in
the production of the commercial.
Dickey made a cameo in the film as the bank manager. “Working with this amazingly talented group of storytellers at CFISD Cinema - students,
teachers, credit union employees (and even a cameo by the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber of Commerce President Leslie Martone) - it is one of the most
fun experiences I’ve ever had. “What they came up with is just so fun, silly and enjoyable,” Dickey said. “Everyone that has seen it has said it made them
laugh out loud. The video truly exceeded our wildest expectations.”
The students’ video will be unveiled at the Texas High School Shorts competition. Cy-Fair FCU’s new VTV commercial is now live on its YouTube
channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKl0VfJaUwc.
DANCE TEAMS PARTICIPATE IN
SUPER BOWL 51 HALFTIME PERFORMANCE
Dance team members representing the Cy-Fair Brigade, Cypress Lakes
Sterling Stars and the Jersey Village Gold Dusters participated in the
Super Bowl 51 halftime performance at NRG Stadium on February 5 th .
Selected groups began rehearsing for the performance in the evenings
at various Houston area stadiums, including NRG stadium. In total,
students attended six rehearsals leading up to the event. As part of the performance requirements, students and directors were required to sign
nondisclosure statements prohibiting them from discussing or sharing information regarding the halftime performance, which featured recording
artist Lady Gaga.
“Besides the halftime performance, we were then asked to be among the three schools that created the pre-game visuals. Being within 100 feet of
President and Mrs. Bush, the award-winning cast of Hamilton and Luke Bryan allowed our students to act out many of the life-long lessons that dance/
drill team teaches: professionalism, work ethic and determination to give 100 percent at all times! I am truly grateful and thankful to our dancers and
all of the time they devoted to this event, our administration for giving us tremendous support and our community for showing us how proud they are
of these young ladies! This has been a dream come true!”
The Girl Scout Cookies are definitely here! More than 1.4 million packages
arrived for Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council at the Council cookie pickup
on Saturday, Feb. 4 th . Many wonderful volunteers helped to unload, sort
and distribute cases of cookies to individual troop Cookie Managers
and helpers. Ever wonder how many cases of Girl Scout Cookies can fit
in a particular kind of vehicle? Our cookie pickup volunteers could tell
you! Many thanks to all who helped out! Cookie booth sales at area
businesses began on February 17 th and run through March 25 th . Don’t
miss a chance to try the new S’mores cookie, as well as your old favorites.
We appreciate the support of our families, friends and neighbors!
Region 4 has been offering a series of opportunities for Cadettes, Seniors
and Ambassadors, including Program Aide training and Red Cross
babysitting. Older girls from Copper Creek Meadows join with girls from
neighboring communities to plan and participate in these activities. The
2017 catalog for day, twilight and resident camp will be coming out soon.
Camp is a great opportunity to learn new skills and make new friends.
Where else can you learn all those camp songs and wear crazy socks and
hats?
Cadette troop 16468 hosted a movie night and panel discussion to
increase awareness of the importance of girls’ access to education.
Those who attended watched the movie “He Named Me Mahala.” The
movie is about Mahala Yousafzai, the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize
Laureate. At the age of15, she was wounded by Taliban gunmen. She is
an educational activist in Pakistan and campaigner for the worldwide
rights of children.
special time with their OWN daughters. Rock climbing, kayaking and
horseback riding are only some of the activities offered. The Dutch
oven cook-off (and eating the results!) and the talent show are fun parts
of this weekend that we look forward to every year. A Girl Planning
BOY SCOUTS
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA - COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have instilled in youth the values found
in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these values are just as relevant
in helping youth grow to their full potential as they were in 1910. Scouting
helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth with programs and activities
that allow them to: • Try new things. • Provide service to others. • Build
self-confidence. • Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that they are important as
individuals while promoting activities that lead to personal responsibility
and high self-esteem. As a result, when hard decisions have to be made,
peer pressure can be resisted and the right choices can be made.
by a quiet time of reflection at the altar. In addition, as we do each Ash
Wednesday service, there will be something “extra” to illustrate God’s
forgiveness of our sins. Special music will be provided by the Chancel
Choir. This will be a meaningful service and everyone is invited to attend.
Lenten Study: Forty Days in the Force
Join St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church on Wednesday nights March 8 th
through April 5 th , from 6:30-7:30 PM for our Lenten series, Forty Days
in the Force. All ages are invited to participate. We will explore the many
spiritual themes that weave throughout the Star Wars films. From the
Force to the dark side, the issues presented in the films have a moral
and spiritual complexity that, if paid attention to, can help us better
understand our place in the world and our relation to others and to
God. Through Forty Days in the Force we hope to see the challenges and
victories in our everyday Christian life. There will always be a teacher and
a student and there will always be evil, but thanks to God and his Son,
there will always be good and we will always have a purpose. Nursery will
be provided for infants and toddlers. Star Wars activities will be provided
for preschoolers. Those ages 6 through 106 will explore the force together.
higher than we might think. What if the real issue is the glory of God? How
are we to respond? In this small group Bible study, best selling author
David Platt calls the church to a contrite, compassionate and courageous
response to the most controversial issues in our culture. This is a 6-week
study and will cover the subjects of: Culture; Wealth; Human Life;
Sexuality; Race and Faith. Please join us on Tuesday mornings at 9:30
AM, at Christ Covenant Church, 17000 Longenbaugh, Houston, TX, 77095,
CYPRESS ASSISTANCE MINISTRIES VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
When you volunteer you are giving to your community, but did you realize
volunteering also benefits you as an individual? CAM volunteers often let
us know the fun they are having, the friends they have made and the
fulfillment they receive from helping others. Cypress Assistance Ministries
is a local non-profit organization serving the Cy-Fair area for over 25 years.
CAM offers assistance to those in need by providing financial assistance,
food, clothing, employment assistance as well as GED & ESL classes. A
huge part of this organization is its volunteers. Currently we are in need of
volunteers in many different areas of the ministry. If you would like more
information on how to become involved, please contact Tara Rauch at
281-955-7684 or tarar@cypressassistance.org. We look forward to hearing
from you! For a description of the services provided at Cypress Assistance
Ministries, Food Pantry requests and a detailed description of volunteer
opportunities, please see our website, www.cypressassistance.org.
FOSTER CHILDREN: PREPARATION FOR ADULT LIVING
When foster children reach age 18, they are considered independent.
That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of the state, with necessities
arranged by caseworkers with state funds. Now they’ll have to figure out
how to organize themselves and make their money last a whole month.
Fortunately, Child protective Services offers them a program to help prepare
for independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long course
culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National Council for
Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior Achievement’s BizTown,
using computer kiosks sponsored by local businesses. Want to help with PAL
or other NCJW programs that help change lives with hands-on community
service? Contact info@ncjwhouston.org or see www.ncjwhouston.org.
EXERCISE
EQUIPMENT
WITH FOUR FEET
AND NO
JUDGMENT!
It is not too late to
keep those New Year
resolutions. Loving
Arms Pet Placement is
a foster-based rescue
for dogs and cats and
is always in need of
foster families. We have
small, medium and
large dogs available
for fostering. Without
enough fosters, some dogs are boarded at a kennel. They would love to
join your family and help you get more exercise.
Tell Loving Arms Pet Placement rescue in what capacity you can help.
Can your home only accommodate small dogs or can you foster big
dogs? Can you take more than one animal at once? There is a lot more
to fostering than providing food, water and a safe place to sleep. To
attract potential adopters, the animal must be people friendly. Include
the animal in your daily home life inside your home. Let your foster dog
jog or walk with you. Visit a dog park and meet new friends. Get to know
the dog as an individual so you can share personality traits, likes/dislikes,
anecdotes. Treat the animal like your own and train him/her, if possible.
Although you may feel sadness when your foster animal is adopted,
please know that your efforts helped to prepare the cat or dog for his/
her forever home.
Visit Loving Arms Pet Placement website at www.lovingarmspetplacement.
TAX SCAMS/CONSUMER ALERTS
In recent years, thousands of people have lost millions of dollars and their personal
information to tax scams and fake IRS communication. REMEMBER: The IRS doesn’t
initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to
request personal or financial information. In addition, IRS does not threaten taxpayers
with lawsuits, imprisonment or other enforcement action. Being able to recognize
these tell-tale signs of a phishing or tax scam could save you from becoming a victim.
IRS-Impersonation Telephone Scams
An aggressive and sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent
immigrants, has been making the rounds throughout the country. Callers claim to be
employees of the IRS, but are not. These con artists can sound convincing when they
call. They use fake names and bogus IRS identification badge numbers. They may
know a lot about their targets and they usually alter the caller ID to make it look like
the IRS is calling.
Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a
pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then
threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In
many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting. Or, victims may be told they
have a refund due to try to trick them into sharing private information. If the phone isn’t
answered, the scammers often leave an “urgent” call back request.
Note that the IRS will never:
• Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a
prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail you a bill
if you owe any taxes.
• Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested
for not paying.
• Demand that you pay taxes without giving the opportunity to question or appeal the
amount they say you owe.
• Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
Remember: Scammers Change Tactics - Aggressive and threatening phone calls by
criminals impersonating IRS agents remain a major threat to taxpayers, but variations
of the IRS impersonation scam continue year-round and they tend to peak when
scammers find prime opportunities to strike.
Surge in Email, Phishing and Malware Schemes
The IRS saw an approximate 400 percent surge in phishing and malware incidents in
the 2016 tax season.
Scam emails are designed to trick taxpayers into thinking these are official communications
from the IRS or others in the tax industry, including tax software companies.
These phishing schemes can ask taxpayers about a wide range of topics. Emails
can seek information related to refunds, filing status, confirming personal information
ordering transcripts and verifying PIN information.
Variations of these scams can be seen via text messages and the communications
are being reported in every section of the country.
When people click on these email links, they are taken to sites designed to imitate an
official-looking website, such as IRS.gov. The sites ask for Social Security numbers
and other personal information, which could be used to help file false tax returns. The
sites also may carry malware, which can infect people’s computers and allow criminals
to access your files or track your keystrokes to gain information.
GARDENING TIPS FOR MARCH
VEGETABLES
• Plant vegetables such as tomatoes, sweet corn and snap beans and pepper, as
well as cucumbers, lima or butter beans, cantaloupe, okra (if the soil has warmed
sufficiently - 70 degrees F. or higher), southern peas, pumpkin, squash, peanuts and
watermelon.
LAWN
• Re-sod or replant as needed with turfgrasses adapted to this part of Texas and
suited to the planting location (shade or sun).
• When resodding semi-shaded areas with St. Augustine, use ONLY the variety
Floratam for best pest resistance. See www.plantanswers.com/grass.htm.
TREES AND SHRUBS
• Plant container-grown trees and shrubs as soon as possible. In shady areas, where
grass is difficult to grow, consider planting a dependable groundcover such as
English ivy, Asian jasmine, vinca or one of the prostrate junipers.
• Prune spring flowering and evergreen shrubs during early March. However, be sure
to prune spring flowering shrubs after they have bloomed.
• Fertilize with a pre-plant application of a slow-release fertilizer analysis such as 19 -
5 - 9 at the rate of 3 pounds per 100 square feet of garden planting area. Early March
is the ideal time to fertilize landscape plants because you give them food just before
the spring growing season starts.
