About this Awards Manual For many years, the awards records of the SARL were maintained manually in a tome kept in the Headquarters building in Cape Town. For the majority of the post-war period, the records were maintained by the then Awards Manager JEJ (Koos) van der Merwe, ZS1AW. The book is now slightly worn. Its format is slightly larger than A4, and it is about 35 mm thick. Its pages show evidence of meticulous record keeping over many decades. The first recorded awards date to 1950. The period from 1950 to 1963 appears to show only one handwriting. From 1963 to 1981, there is some variation. However, Koos appears to have been the main driving force during this period, as the inside dust cover is signed by Koos on 1963-07-24. On or about 1989-05-25, Koos wrote the following: Hier eindig my werk wat in Kaapstad gedoen is. Ek, Koos van der Merwe ZS1AW wens my opvolger alles van die beste toe, en hoop dat diegene wat die reëls toepas streng en eerlik sal wees, die aansoeke van die AAA spoedig sal nasien en afstuur. Koos ZS1AW, Toekenningsbestuurder. At this point, Buck Taylor ZS1VP took over. He continued to administer the awards until October 1990. Buck later returned to England, where he was G0OYH. He died in 2007. The next Awards Manager was Dick Andrews ZS5RE, who handled the portfolio from November 1990 to May 1997. Dick has also subsequently died. In June 1997, Tjerk Lammers ZS6P took over the responsibility. He continues to handle the awards portfolio to this day. When Tjerk took over the records, Chris R. Burger ZS6EZ requested access to the records to make them more widely available. He published the All Africa Award and Worked All ZS lists on his Web site until 2007. He did most of the typing, assisted by Don Milner ZS6AQS. Tjerk made good use of the availability of electronic versions of these records, by creating this SARL Awards Directory. The opportunity was also used to revamp aspects of the award rules to bring them into line with current practice, add more incentives to the Worked All ZS programme and unified all award and contest rules in the SARL stable. The revamp of the WAZS programme was accompanied by a series of trophies from the Pretoria Contest Club. It was not until 2010 that the last of these trophies was claimed. Another event significant to the WAZS programme occurred around 2005. Richard Seddon ZS2CLI created the SA-QSL system, to enable South Africans to confirm contacts via the SARL Web site. The effect on the WAZS programme has been startling. During the 1980s, only 20 certificates were issued. During the 1990s, only nine applicants came forward. The announcement of the new WAZS series produced a spurt of half a dozen applications during 2001, followed by a four-year period without a single one. A single applicant applied for WAZS-500, with only two stations applying for WAZS-200 before 2005. During 2006, everything changed. SA-QSL came into widespread usage and the chase was on. The WAZS-500 list clearly shows the trend. WAZS-500 was announced in 2000. The first application only arrived in 2002, and pre-dates the use of SA-QSL.
