• In addition to airing programs distributed by PBS, Eight/KAET produces its own award-winning programs. Especially noteworthy are HORIZON, our nightly public affairs program, HORIZONTE, our newest weekly series examining Arizona issues through a Hispanic lens and The Arizona Collection, an anthology of programs that celebrates the people, places and history of Arizona. Among the programs in this series are Over Arizona; Monumental Arizona; Barry Goldwater: Photographs & Memories; Thieves of Time; Seasons of a Navajo; River of Stone; and Kolb Brothers: Grand Canyon Pioneers and Monumental Arizona. • PBS KIDS’ Curious George outranks all other children’s television shows including those from competitive networks such as Disney and Nickelodeon. Additionally, over 60 research studies, funded by a U.S. Department of Education Ready to Learn grant, help ensure high quality, standards based children’s programming, online resources, and curriculum for PreK- Grade 2 children. ACCESS • PBS is committed to presenting a diversity of voices through its public affairs programming and dedicated to providing a wide array of viewpoints in order to present a true marketplace of ideas. • PBS is one of only four (4) TV services that reach 99 percent of all TV households in America (the others are NBC, CBS, and ABC — Fox only reaches 72 percent). Basic cable services are received by roughly 65 percent of all TV households —those that can afford cable services. (Arizona’s cable penetration is approximately 58 percent.) The single greatest method to improve our society is through education, arts, and culture. The life enriching educational programming found on Eight should not be available to only those that can afford it – quite the contrary. • Eight / KAET reaches 80 percent of the people of Arizona (the other 15 percent are served well by KUAT-Tucson). • We think of our viewers as citizens, not as consumers. • We have been selected as one of a limited number of PBS affiliates to partner with outside organizations to create unique community outreach experiences for all viewers, and the education community, specifically around these programs: The War, We Shall Remain and The Human Spark. • Eight’s Ready To Learn program improves the school readiness of young children. Through RTL, developed in cooperation with the US Department of Education, KAET has provided over 80 statewide workshops, teaching over 1,000 childcare providers, parents, and caregivers how to use KAET’s commercial-free, educational children’s programs to bring the learning readiness of preschoolers up to standard before they enter kindergarten and first grade. Through RTL, KAET has helped over 13,000 Arizona children enter school “ready to learn.” • Eight’s PreK-12 educational program, Arizona School Services through Educational Technology, serves over 60,000 educators across Arizona with online and face to face professional development and PBS curricular resources for their students. ASSET was in the top 3 affiliates nationwide distributing PBS TeacherLine online courses. AZ Educators have participated in over 330,000 hours of online learning through PBS TeacherLine. • Eight has been selected as one of a limited number of affiliate stations to serve families and the early childhood education community with initiatives such as PBS Kids Raising Readers and program outreach with A Place of Our Own/Los Niños En Su Casa and Sid the Science Kid.
• PBS is ranked 6th out of 300 channels for largest viewing audience. • PBS.org is one of the most visited dot-org Web sites in the world. • In terms of attracting viewers in the 18 to 49 age category, PBS news and public affairs outpaces similar programming on CNBC, CNN, Fox News and Court TV. IMPACT • In a merging, consolidating, increasingly global media world, public television has stayed local. In fact, the local public television station is often the only locally operated media enterprise in a community. Eight is the only local broadcast station that is locally owned and has a community service mission … all the other stations are either owned by non-Arizona corporations, or have a profit motive, or both. • Capitalizing on our unique role, we continue to promote and stimulate local culture, encourage civic participation, foster public dialogue and educate and inform Arizona viewers in ways that provide new opportunities to improve their lives and livelihoods. • Eight’s education staff provides free face to face professional development on PBS broadcast and online resources by going to educators and parent groups across the state, helping align resources to their needs and initiatives to improve school readiness and student achievement. • Without PBS and NPR, the United States would be the ONLY democracy in the world without a public broadcasting service. • Arizona needs at least one independent, non-commercial, non-profit, community-centric TV station. Children should have at least one safe source for quality, interruption-free, educational TV. Truly balanced and unbiased public affairs program is found on the most trusted TV station in Arizona – Eight. Our arts and cultural programs are the biggest and the best — without interruption. Eight has something for everyone … especially you. Why we need PBS… • We should have a PBS for the same reason that we need public libraries even though there are bookstores. That we should have art museums even though there are private art galleries. The private/ commercial sector would never have developed and nurtured Sesame Street, or Great Performances, or The NewsHour. Similar programs are now being emulated on commercial and/or cable channels, but without PBS leading the way, they would never have come into being in that risk averse, short- term profit motivated, commercial environment. • PBS has fostered a variety of technical innovations in both communications and education (in much the same way as NASA has with engineering technologies). PBS was the first to develop closed captioning for the hearing impaired, DVS or descriptive visual services for the sight impaired, and data transmissions via the SAP or second audio program channel. And, PBS has developed HDTV (high definition television) technologies for the next generation of life-long learners. • In a time where media ownership is being consolidated into bigger businesses with fewer owners, public television’s national/local model — with autonomous, community-based media institutions — is more important than ever.
