8 THE BUGLE FRIDAY 10 MARCH 2017 POLICE ORGANISE NEW CHAIRS Police have responded to a plea from more than 500 high school pupils from Mbulelo Benekane Senior Secondary with a donation of 340 chairs. The school is in Ramnyiba village, just outside King William’s Town. Two years ago, it was reported about the severe shortage of desks at the school, which led to daily altercations among pupils as they fought over chairs. Pupils sat on each other’s laps or on paint tins during class, the mood changed at the school as police from the All Saints Detective Academy arrived with a truckload of chairs. Colonel Khanyisa Ndyoko, from All Saints, said that in 2015 the academy visited three rural schools around King William’s Town and after comparing their situations, decided to adopt Mbulelo Benekane. “After engaging the principal HAFEEZ and staff members it was brought to our attention that they have multiple challenges, including a shortage of chairs for pupils. “We made a presentation to Liberty Life in East London about the shortage, and after all the formal processes were followed by both parties, 340 chairs were delivered by the service provider to All Saints in January,” said Ndyoko. Ndyoko said what motivated the police was the fact that despite pupils sitting on three-legged chairs or on each others’ laps, the school still managed to achieve good pass rates. “Despite this challenge, the pupils at the school are eager to learn and that has shown in their matric pass rate,” said Ndyoko. In 2015, the pass rate at this school was 80% and 77% in 2016. Maths and English teacher Monwabisi Zweni described how much time was wasted with fights over chairs. “By the time the scramble is over, you realise half the lesson is gone,” said Zweni. School principal Nombuyekezo Nogcantsi, who has been at the school for almost three decades, said the chairs would be a great help in improving the learning and teaching environment. “No amount of words can describe the joy that I feel today. FRIDAY 10 MARCH 2017 THE BUGLE 9 Scifest 2017 to take visitors on a "tour of science" Two little kids are in hospital beds next to each other. The first kid leans over and asks, What are you in here for? The second kid says, I m in here to get my tonsils out and I’m a little nervous. The first kid says, You’ve got nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was four. They put you to sleep, and when you wake up they give you lots of jelly and ice-cream. It’s a breeze. Cool, says the second kid. What are you in here for? A circumcision. Whoa! exclaims the second kid. Good luck, mate. I had that done just after I was born and I couldn’t walk for a year. A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party in a bar. When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned: "Daddy, you shouldn't wear that suit. "And why not, darling?", the father asked. You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning." The Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, will officially open Scifest 2017 in Grahamstown on Friday, 10 March. Scifest, South Africa's largest science festival, this year promises to take visitors on a journey through the mysteries of science. The 2017 theme, "Tour de Science", is linked to the UN International Year for Sustainable Tourism for Development. Visitors will be taken on an expedition exploring the milestones, discoveries and excitement of various fields of science. Celebrating its 21th anniversary, Scifest will focus on "edutourism" – travel for the purpose of learning – in scientific facilities across Africa. Prof. Michael Kosch of the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), one of many speakers, will talk on "Travel through space and discover the mysteries of sprites: first recordings of these dazzling lights in South Africa." The festival's main events include aquatic science activities at "Water World", and the chance to "speed-date a scientist". Following last year's success, "Science in the Township" will again be held at Jozana indoor sports centre near Grahamstown, giving local learners easier access to the festival experience. Among those expected to attend are SANSA's newly appointed CEO, Dr Val Munsamy, and NASA's retired astronomer, Dr Jim Adams.
