THE CRANFORD REVIEW
Design and Visual
On Thursday 10th July 2008 the Art Design and
Technology Department held its final show. An
example of every student’s work at GCSE, AS or
A2 in Art, Textiles, Resistant Materials, Graphics
and Product design was exhibited.
Four of the most talented A level art students were
asked to take part in a competition to paint a
portrait of our Headteacher, Kevin Prunty. The
portraits were revealed during the course of the
evening and Mr Prunty selected the winning entry
by Gurvinder Kular who received £50 cash prize.
The three runners up each received £20 prizes.
Tina Pickering who is a professional artist with
a particular interest in portrait work, had some
of her work on display and gave a talk about the
inspiration behind some of her pieces.
Cranford Community College has long provided
education for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller
children.
The Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History
Month in June 2008 provided an opportunity
to celebrate the culture. Pupils worked on
stories and posters about their culture, which
were displayed in the school. Gypsy photos and
artefacts were also displayed and used in lessons
and DVDs were shown featuring
music and interviews.
A barbecue was also held, which
students and parents attended.
Olympic Sports Day
Gypsy Roma Travellers
Cranford’s Olympic Sports day
had all the buzz and colour
of the real thing. In spite of
the rain, students and staff
cheered and waved flags
of support as students
competed for gold, silver
and bronze awards in sporting
excellence.
Bollywood
Hollywood
November 2008
The red carpet was rolled
out at Cranford Community
College on Wednesday 7th
May 2008 as the stars came
to town! Students at the
school became celebrities for
the night when their media
studies work was showcased
as part of Cranford’s first ever
awards ceremony- the theme for
the night was ‘Bollywood meets
Hollywood’. This was chosen
to celebrate the vibrant mix of
cultures that is evident at the
school. The awards were given
out for the best trailers, thriller
openings and music videos that
were made by students as part
of the GCSE and A-level Media
Studies courses.
It was a fantastic opportunity for
students, parents, teachers and
members from the industry
to see the unique work
created by the talented
pupils at Cranford.
SUMMER CELEBRATIONS OF EXCELLENCE ...

to India
In July 2008 Harpreet Bains, Mandeep Bath and Satvinder Sangra
volunteered to take part in the Fulcrum Challenge 2008. The programme
consisted of raising £1550 each with the other half donated by BAA
who paid for the airline ticket, all travel
and accommodation costs for the heart of
Himalayas where they worked to refurbish a
primary school.
Two weeks of camping in the cold, long journeys across
mountains and breath taking scenery were rewarded with the
joy of seeing the children’s faces and successfully completing
the project.
11 members of staff and 20 students went on a
journey of a lifetime. TIFERT (Tianjin Institute for Foreign
Economic Relations and Trade) shares a long standing partnership with
Cranford and hosted the visit. The trip focussed upon visits to business
enterprises and cultural sites to broaden students’ understanding of the
Chinese way of life.
They had many opportunities to get to know the Chinese hosts who made
all feel very welcome and on the final day the two cultures celebrated
together with an international evening.
Prime
Minister’s
Global Fellowship
The Prime Minister’s Global
Fellowship has been set up to help
young people understand Britain’s
role on the global stage. The
scheme has been created to nurture
outstanding talent and enterprise
through international exposure to
different countries and their way of
life.
Thousands of students across
the country applied and were
interviewed but Kirandeep Sidhu
from Cranford Community College
was awarded a place on the first
ever project. She discovered first
hand what globalisation means
for Britain and for the rest of
the world. Kirandeep applied
for this project because she
knew the opportunity was
“too good to miss”.
Harmohit Rai and Mrs. Kaher, Pastoral Manager to the 6th
form, embarked on their Fulcrum journey to Botswana in July
2008. It was an amazing and indeed a life changing experience
for them both. The first project for the group of 26 students from a
range of schools was to dig a foundation for a fisheries trading office
in Tocadi.
Their second project was at Bana Ba Betsi boys’ school where they
built a sustainable protected vegetable patch so that the boys can grow
their own vegetables all year round. This was an amazing opportunity
and and personal journey. Both Harmohit and Mrs. Kaher would love
to do it again.
The Primary French Market took place on
2nd July 2008 hosted by year 9 fast
for students to partake in intellectual debate voicing their
opinions about issues that matter.
Students engaged in a variety of activities, including
‘Speed debating’, various workshops and a ‘Question Time’
“I am absolutely delighted that Cranford Community
College students have done so well academically yet
again this year and have maintained the successive
improvements of recent years. Over 66% attained
5+A*-C at GCSE.
The government
target of 50% 5+
A*-C including
maths and English was
also achieved.
I am absolutely delighted with the continued
improvement in post 16 results which is due
to the hard work and commitment of students
and staff at the school. The school and parents
can be very proud of the pupils”.
