BYK is one of the world’s lead<strong>in</strong>g suppliers of additives used <strong>in</strong> the coat<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong>ks and plastics<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry. Additives are used by process<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustries <strong>in</strong> the production of coat<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong>ks,<br />

and plastics. In very small quantities, BYK additives simplify manufactur<strong>in</strong>g processes, and<br />

has been produc<strong>in</strong>g additives s<strong>in</strong>ce 1962 <strong>in</strong> Wesel, <strong>Germany</strong>. Today it employs over 1.000<br />

people worldwide, 25 % of whom work <strong>in</strong> research and development departments or technical<br />

laboratories.<br />

BYK is a member of ALTANA (Wesel). ALTANA develops and produces high quality,<br />

<strong>in</strong>novative products <strong>in</strong> the specialty chemicals bus<strong>in</strong>ess and has been exclusively <strong>in</strong>volved<br />

with <strong>Nano</strong>phase Technology Corporation (NTC), a lead<strong>in</strong>g company <strong>in</strong> the field of<br />

nanotechnology, s<strong>in</strong>ce March 2004.<br />

In close collaboration with NTC (USA) BYK is develop<strong>in</strong>g additives for pa<strong>in</strong>t and plastic<br />

systems based on nanotechnology. The first nanoadditives series NANOBYK, which visibly<br />

improves the scratch and abrasion resistance of coat<strong>in</strong>gs while simultaneously preserv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

all other important pa<strong>in</strong>t properties such as gloss, flexibility and adhesion, has already been<br />

successfully launched on the market.<br />
