Family activities galore at The Royal Gunpowder Mills<br />

The Royal Gunpowder Mills at Waltham Abbey is an excellent location for children and adults to<br />

spend time learning about science, heritage and history. Located in 170 acres of natural parkland<br />

the Royal Gunpowder Mills has popular events throughout the year including VE Weekend, Wild<br />

West Weekend, Victorian Days, and other special shows, plus they run guided walks for history,<br />

nature and much more. Children can immerse themselves in a wide range of creative activities and<br />

science with Professor Nitrate in the Mad Lab. The interactive exhibition is child-friendly. There is an<br />

acclaimed armoury and introductory film, ample play space for the kids as well as a lovely café, land<br />

A family-friendly, living,<br />

breathing railway museum<br />

The East Anglian Railway Museum is a living<br />

heritage museum. It is based at Chappel<br />

railway station, Essex, on the edge of<br />

breathtaking Constable country and next<br />

to the impressive Chappel Viaduct, the<br />

largest in the east of England. The original,<br />

station buildings tell the story of railways<br />

from the 1840s through to the 21st Century<br />

and the historic carriages evoke fond memories<br />

of childhood train travel years ago. The Waiting Rooms, Station Master’s<br />

Office and Clearing House have all been recreated into atmospheric ‘room<br />

sets’ and working signal boxes provide hands on, interactive experiences,<br />

enjoyed by visitors young and old. Other highlights include the huge<br />

Victorian Goods Shed and Restoration Shed, where you can see behind<br />

Braintree District Museum is a fun,<br />

educational and hands-on museum<br />

for the whole family to enjoy. They<br />

have trails and hands-on activities<br />

archeology sand pit to book baskets<br />

for every age. During school holidays<br />

they run themed activities every day<br />

(Tuesday to Friday). These highly<br />

a great couple of hours for kids to be<br />
