Grammar school applications Deciding on the right secondary school for your child can be one of the most difficult decisions that you take as a parent. If your child seems to need more academic challenge than the majority of their peers you might also consider the 11+ test and applying for a selective grammar school. This might all seem a rather daunting process but it doesn’t need to be. If you start planning early enough you will find it easier to make informed decisions and reduce the stress as much as possible for you and your child. What is a grammar school? Grammar schools are state schools, whose places are applied for through the Local Education Authority. They do not charge fees. Of the over 3,000 secondary schools in England, only 163 are grammar schools. Places in these schools are allocated selectively, by academic ability, based on performance in the 11+ test. There are a number of grammar schools in Essex and surrounding counties, many of which are represented by the Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex www.csse.org.uk How do I apply for a grammar school place for my child? You must register your child to sit an 11+ test by completing the CSSE’s Supplementary Information Form and also name the school as one of your preferences on your Local Authority Common Application Form. What is the 11+ test? The same selection test is utilised by ten CSSE schools and saves children, whose parents express a preference for more than one selective school, having to take multiple tests. For CSSE schools there are two papers, English and Maths, each 1 hour long and worth equal marks. The English paper comprises comprehension, grammar and vocabulary questions, two pieces of creative writing and applied reasoning (literacy/verbal) and the Maths paper comprises questions consistent with the more challenging elements of the KS2 National Curriculum and applied reasoning (maths/non-verbal reasoning). The purpose of the 11+ test is to enable grammar schools to identify children who have the potential to thrive in an environment which provides a highly academic curriculum, which also has depth and breadth, and offers a range of challenging pursuits. Ofsted: Outstanding Should my child sit the 11+ test? It can sometimes be difficult to decide as a parent whether or not your child should sit the 11+ test and often your child’s primary school teacher will be the best person to advise you. The Headteachers of the CSSE selective grammar schools in Essex have suggested that some of the qualities such children will have demonstrated are: • curiosity, enjoyment of learning and problem solving • perseverance and completion of challenging tasks • understanding of all concepts taught at primary school • enjoyment of a wide range of literature and/ or non-fiction texts and familiarity with reading and responding to texts with a reading age greater than 11 • understanding of the rudiments of spelling, grammar and punctuation • creativity in sustained writing • ability to make connections between various areas of knowledge • a good memory • imagination and original ideas • ability to work at pace and assimilate information quickly • appreciation of numerical conventions and ability to apply mathematical concepts How can I prepare my child for the 11+ test? All grammar school Headteachers share a concern that extensive coaching for the 11+ is inappropriate, can be counterproductive and may mean that a child succeeds in the test but is not actually able to cope with the demands of a highly academic curriculum. It is however, advisable for children to spend a few hours familiarising themselves with the style of responses required in the papers. This can be done at home, using materials and papers available on the CSSE website. Grammar schools who are not members of the CSSE also provide sample test papers on their school websites. When does the 11+ test take place? The 11+ test for admission in September 2018 will take place in September 2017. For schools within the CSSE registration for the test for opens from Thursday 4 May 2017 to Friday 21 July 2017. The 11+ test takes place on Saturday 23 September, 2017. For Chelmsford County High School for Girls registration for the test opens from Friday 5th May to Friday 30th June 2017 (midday). The Entrance Test Day is Saturday 16th September 2017.
