Sub-tropical - Sidmouthʼs Connaught Gardens and Jacobʼs Ladder Bluebell Time It’s time to head to the woods, shortly! Surely one of the greatest joys of spring is making a visit to the local bluebell woods. The heady scent is almost indescribable, that fine, sharp, dry, tang in the nose, reminiscent of hyacinth but so much more subtle. The absolute bliss of seeing sunshine streaking down through the branches and lighting up the mauve carpet is an incomparable sight by any standards. It’s an annual spectacle to share with friends, family and dogs. Jewel of the East Thereʼs much confusion about East Devon as a regional name. Many consider it doesnʼt reflect that itʼs actually part of the south Devon coastline, perhaps missing appeal, after all the word ʻEastʼ does conjour up a somewhat cooler picture in ones mind. Whatever your viewpoint, we feature East Devonʼs crown jewel in this issue of Devonshire magazine - Sidmouth. Iʼm sure youʼll agree, itʼs a damn fine place to visit from near or far! Devised for the less experience of you that are looking to advance your photographic skills. Digital camera technology has never been better, yes, camera phones have also advanced, but they remain ‘jack of all trades’ devices, with inherent limits. We also take you on a pictorial visit to the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm. Incidentally, if you’ve never been lucky enough to see one of our native Red Squirrels, then you’ll be delighted to know the farm has several of them in residence - you’ll notice how very much prettier they are than their grey, drab, counterparts. Many people are vaguely aware of the literary Anglo Saxon treasure, the Exeter book, otherwise known as The Book of Riddles which resides at Exeter Cathedral Library. If, like myself, you’ve found yourself wondering what the strange shiny metal pyramid is in Exeter’s High Street, well, it is a direct visual reference to this ancient book, and it displays riddles from the book engraved upon its surfaces. The book itself is fairly plain when you see it in the flesh, but please don’t be fooled, it’s rarity and bawdy content holds great fascination. We have many great resident artists in Devon, and it was a major loss to the art community in this county when one of Devon’s most loved artists Michael Morgan RI passed away in 2014. Marine House at Beer who worked closely with Michael for many years are now hosting a major exhibition starting on 22nd April until the 5th May which presents 50 fine paintings reflecting the evolution of his iconic work from the late eighties until 2012. This is certainly an art show not to be missed (See Arts section). The Exeter Book With Easter approaching, don’t miss our new and improved Hubcast.co.uk mobile version.
