seaside' when we were introduced to Hilton 

Brighton Metropole! 

With Brighton's mix of history and heritage, arts and 

culture, beachfront buzz and sensational shopping, 

it’s own Regency royal palace and being situated 

only 30 minutes from London Gatwick, this venue 

really does have bucket loads to offer organisers 

and delegates. 

Fabulous exhibition space, a maximum banquet 

style capacity of 1300 guests, and spectacular 

panoramic city and sea views from the Chartwell 

Suite. What's not to love? 

Our Pro Tip: The Salt Rooms restaurant serves 

fresh British fish and crustaceans cooked over a 

real charcoal oven. Enjoy! 

Hilton London Kensington has recently refurbished 

their 11 meeting rooms, taking inspiration from its 

location in the leafy district of Holland Park. 'A walk in 

the park' theme flows through the new design, with 

attractive shades and layered patterns to create a 

rural-meets-urban, eclectic city feel. 

A particular highlight is the venue's atrium, which 

offers a fabulous break out area, full of natural light. 

Our Pro Tip: To be in London and to not shop, 

dine or be entertained would be a crime! The West 

End, shops and restaurants are all within walking 

distance so pack some flats! 

Hilton Manchester Deansgate really wowed us! 

Forming part of the Beetham Tower, there's an 

impressive 47 stories, making it the tallest UK 

building outside of London. Cloud 23, the 

sophisticated sky bar, looks amazing with its 

panoramic views of Manchester, and makes a 

perfect backdrop for popping open a bottle of 

champagne, or enjoying cocktails and afternoon 

tea while the Podium Restaurant offers deliciously 

innovative cuisine. 

Our Pro Tip: Not just for entertaining guests in 

Cloud 23! The hotel has 11 meeting rooms and 

suites, with the Deansgate Suite providing the 

largest capacity (600 delegates). Located minutes 

from Piccadilly and Victoria Railway Stations, with 

Manchester International Airport only 25 minutes 

away. Organisers looking for a Manchester

The Tee Time Interview 

PGA Professional Mark Lloyd joined 

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts in June 2016 

before being appointed Director of Golf at 

Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf & Spa in 

October. The Shropshire based resort offers 

two challenging golf courses, both designed 

by distinguished TV commentator Peter Aliss 

and former Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas 

in 1975, making it one of the UK’s leading 

golf venues. 

What makes Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, 

Golf & Spa so special for visiting golfers 

and corporate golf events? 

The Par-73 Emerald Championship Course is 

6,714 yards in length and features undulating 

fairways, natural water hazards and strategically 

placed bunkers. At 4,801 yards, the shorter, 

Par-66 Sapphire course is slightly more forgiving 

than the Emerald course, but its tight greens 

ensure the course is an enjoyable experience 

for visiting golfers. 

Away from the golf course, visiting golfers are 

also able to experience the resort, which is 

located amid acres of peaceful gardens, yet 

conveniently close to motorway networks. 

The recently refurbished 4-star hotel offers 86 

well equipped bedrooms, with its relaxed country 

club ambience and stylish, modern interiors 

helping to ensure an unforgettable stay. 

In addition, the hotel also offers guests the

What's your favourite hole at Macdonald Hill 

Valley Hotel, Golf & Spa and why? 

We are fortunate to have two great golf courses 

and some really fantastic golf holes, but I would 

have to say that my favourite hole is the 18th on 

the Emerald Championship Course. 

Playing your final approach shot over water, with 

guests watching from the terrace that overlooks 

the green, helps to ensure it is an amazing way 

to finish your round of golf. 



Describe the difference between playing 

at your course in the summer to a round in 

the winter? How would the course differ? 

Are there particular seasonal challenges? 

The green keeping staff do an amazing job to 

ensure the golf courses are in great condition, 

while the good drainage of the courses enables 

visiting golfers to have a memorable round of 

golf whatever time of year they visit. 

However, the big difference in playing the two 

courses between the summer and winter is with 

the trees. We have around 40,000 trees lining the 

fairways, so there is a little more forgiveness on 

any stray shots during the winter months. 

What programs are there at Macdonald Hill 

Valley Hotel, Golf & Spa for junior golfers? 

The Sapphire Course provides an ideal 

opportunity for junior golfers to get involved in 

the game as it's relatively short, so you don’t have 

to hit the ball long distances, but the tree-lined 

fairways help to promote accuracy from the tee, 

which is a great lesson to learn. 

Encouraging more juniors to take up the game 

is something I am passionate about, so in 2017 

I will be looking to introduce a number of junior 

classes and to work with local schools in order 

to attract the next generation of golfer. 

Have you ever made a hole-in-one? If so, 

what course and how did you celebrate? 

I have only ever had one hole-in-one and it 

was while I was playing socially with friends and 

aside from a few high-fives, the celebrations 

were fairly relaxed. 

However, I remember it was slightly different 

when I made an albatross on the 8th hole at 

Hawkstone Park Club, where I holed my second 

shot from about 220 yards. I celebrated by 

jumping up and down for about five minutes! 



How old were you when you first started 

playing golf? 

I played a number of different sports growing 

up, including football, tennis, table tennis and 

golf. My mum and dad were both keen golfers 

and I remember I first started playing with them 

when I was eight years old. I then got my first 

set of clubs when I was nine and then by the 

age of 12 I began to concentrate fully on golf 

and have loved it ever since. 

When you were at school, what did you want 

to be when you grew up? 

Growing up I knew I always wanted to be involved 

with sport in some way as it was such a huge part 

of my life. Being able to now have a job doing 

something I love is fantastic. 

What future plans do you have for the golf 

course? 

We have an on-going commitment to ensuring 

the courses remain in prime condition throughout 

the year and we completed a number of 

enhancements, including bunker renovation, 

greens project works and pathway redevelopment 

at the end of 2016, all designed to further enhance 

playing conditions and the overall customer 

experience. 

We're confident the upgrades will help showcase 

both courses in their best condition for the 2017 

season and beyond, ensuring both the Emerald 

and Sapphire are must-play courses for visiting 

golfers. 



What is the most popular post-round menu 

in the clubhouse? 

We have a number of food options available 

for golfers, from eating in the relaxed Sports or 

Lounge Bars, to dining in the more formal Border’s 

Restaurant, which serves a range of modern 

dishes, all prepared from the finest ingredients. 

However, despite all of the options available, the 

most popular post-round dish for visiting golfers 

is, without question, the fish and chips! 

Who is your golf hero and why? 

Tiger Woods. There is little I can say about him 

that hasn’t already been said, but he has had 

such a dramatic influence on the game and has 

inspired a generation of golfers to play a sport 

they might not have considered previously.

Jonathan Bradwell from The Earl of 

Doncaster Hotel combines marketing 

and e-commerce with public and guest 

relations at the South Yorkshire venue, 

which boasts a unique Art Deco style 

guaranteed to impress guests and 

delegates. 

What does your typical week at work 

involve? 

I work in a fantastic, fast paced environment 

where the week varies depending on our 

marketing objectives. 

Every day I look after our social media channels 

and update and maintain our website. As well 

as having a hotel with excellent meeting and 

conference facilities, we're used for weddings, 

dining and special events and it's my 

responsibility to develop our marketing 

strategies for each of these areas of business. 

I also oversee any public relations requirements 

that arise. 

What has been the highlight of your career 

so far? 

It has to be when the The Earl of Doncaster 

Hotel’s sales & marketing department won 

the Doncaster Chamber Business Awards for 

Excellence in Marketing & Communications. 

We had previously been nominated as a 

finalist, so it was great last year when we won 

the award. It was excellent to have the team 

recognised for the developments we've made 

and as the awards were in December, it was 

a fabulous way to finish what was a very 

successful year. 

How did you get into the leisure industry? 

After studying Journalism at degree level in 

Edinburgh, I moved back to South Yorkshire 

and took my first role at The Earl of Doncaster 

Hotel as a Marketing, Sales & Social Media 

Assistant. I've always had a keen interest in the 

leisure industry and the role at the hotel was a 

fantastic opportunity for me. Two years have 

passed and I am now the Marketing and 

E-Commerce Manager. 

Why should an Event Organiser use 

The Earl of Doncaster for their next event? 

The hotel is conveniently located within a 20 

minute drive of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, a ten 

minute drive from Doncaster Train Station, and 

within walking distance of the town centre so it's 

in a great position. 

We have a dedicated events team to take care 

of organiser's needs, a Ballroom capable of 

hosting 250 delegates, 73 distinctly decorated 

bedrooms, the on-site Cafe Bar Concerto 

restaurant and our team of chefs who will 

create delegate menus from locally sourced, 

fresh ingredients - it's a perfect combination! 


Industry Interview 

The past few years have seen a lot of 

changes at the hotel. Which areas have 

been refurbished and can you tell us a little 

about the design? 

The most significant refurbishment was to our 

Concorde Suite, a room used for weddings, 

celebrations and conferences. The traditional 

looking décor, which included a carpeted floor, 

has been replaced with a marble effect floor, 

a customised lighting system and bright, 

crisp whites and creams. The design is 

now completely in keeping with the rest of 

the hotel and with it's built-in bar, it's ideal for 

birthdays, anniversaries and award evenings. 

In the next few weeks we're planning to install 

a state-of-the-art interactive screen which can 

be used for conference calls and presentations. 

We're also finalising the ‘show kitchen’ which 

can be opened up to become part of the room 

and offer guests a unique visual experience 

when dining at functions. 

Which refurbished area is your favourite? 

Our bedrooms are truly unique, with many of 

them incorporating the distinct art deco feel of 

the hotel. Our Executive Bedrooms are individual 

in colour, offer a large king size bed, table and 

chairs as well as quality bed covers with 

‘The Earl’ customised pillow cases. 

What do you love to do when not working? 

I like to keep and learn about reptiles, 

amphibians and fish. I currently have a Bearded 

Dragon, Gray Tree Frog and a River Loach. 

Exotic animals and aquariums are very rewarding 

to look after and something I've been interested 

in for some years now. 

I help out at a local dog rescue centre, walking 

the dogs on Saturdays to help them stay healthy 

and exercised. I also enjoy playing the guitar, 

listening to music and watching martial arts. 

What sets the Earl of Doncaster apart from 

other hotels in the area? 

Although the hotel has undergone a massive 

transformation since it originally opened in 

1938, the art deco charm and character has 

very much remained a part of the guest’s 

experience. The entire team here are very 

enthusiastic about the property, and I believe 

this shows in the genuinely warm welcome 

every guest receives. 

We're also in an excellent location in Doncaster, 

both within a reasonably short distance to the 

town centre and within driving distance of a 

variety of excellent visitor attractions.
