It was a case of 'we do like to be beside the<br />

seaside' when we were introduced to Hilton<br />

Brighton Metropole!<br />

With Brighton's mix of history and heritage, arts and<br />

it’s own Regency royal palace and being situated<br />

only 30 minutes from London Gatwick, this venue<br />

really does have bucket loads to offer organisers<br />

panoramic city and sea views from the Chartwell<br />

Hilton London Kensington has recently refurbished<br />

their 11 meeting rooms, taking inspiration from its<br />

location in the leafy district of Holland Park. 'A walk in<br />

the park' theme flows through the new design, with<br />

attractive shades and layered patterns to create a<br />

rural-meets-urban, eclectic city feel.<br />

A particular highlight is the venue's atrium, which<br />

offers a fabulous break out area, full of natural light.<br />

Our Pro Tip: To be in London and to not shop,<br />

dine or be entertained would be a crime! The West<br />

End, shops and restaurants are all within walking<br />

distance so pack some flats!<br />

Hilton Manchester Deansgate really wowed us!<br />

Forming part of the Beetham Tower, there's an<br />

impressive 47 stories, making it the tallest UK<br />

building outside of London. Cloud 23, the<br />

sophisticated sky bar, looks amazing with its<br />

panoramic views of Manchester, and makes a<br />

perfect backdrop for popping open a bottle of<br />

champagne, or enjoying cocktails and afternoon<br />

tea while the Podium Restaurant offers deliciously<br />

innovative cuisine.<br />

Cloud 23! The hotel has 11 meeting rooms and<br />

PGA Professional Mark Lloyd joined<br />

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts in June 2016<br />

before being appointed Director of Golf at<br />

Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf & Spa in<br />

October. The Shropshire based resort offers<br />

two challenging golf courses, both designed<br />

by distinguished TV commentator Peter Aliss<br />

and former Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas<br />

in 1975, making it one of the UK’s leading<br />

golf venues.<br />

What makes Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel,<br />

Golf & Spa so special for visiting golfers<br />

and corporate golf events?<br />

The Par-73 Emerald Championship Course is<br />

6,714 yards in length and features undulating<br />

fairways, natural water hazards and strategically<br />

placed bunkers. At 4,801 yards, the shorter,<br />

Par-66 Sapphire course is slightly more forgiving<br />

than the Emerald course, but its tight greens<br />

ensure the course is an enjoyable experience<br />

for visiting golfers.<br />

Away from the golf course, visiting golfers are<br />

also able to experience the resort, which is<br />

located amid acres of peaceful gardens, yet<br />

conveniently close to motorway networks.<br />

The recently refurbished 4-star hotel offers 86<br />

What's your favourite hole at Macdonald Hill<br />

Valley Hotel, Golf & Spa and why?<br />

We are fortunate to have two great golf courses<br />

and some really fantastic golf holes, but I would<br />

have to say that my favourite hole is the 18th on<br />

the Emerald Championship Course.<br />

Playing your final approach shot over water, with<br />

guests watching from the terrace that overlooks<br />

the green, helps to ensure it is an amazing way<br />

to finish your round of golf.<br />

Describe the difference between playing<br />

at your course in the summer to a round in<br />

the winter? How would the course differ?<br />

Are there particular seasonal challenges?<br />

The green keeping staff do an amazing job to<br />

ensure the golf courses are in great condition,<br />

while the good drainage of the courses enables<br />

visiting golfers to have a memorable round of<br />

golf whatever time of year they visit.<br />

However, the big difference in playing the two<br />

courses between the summer and winter is with<br />

the trees. We have around 40,000 trees lining the<br />

fairways, so there is a little more forgiveness on<br />

any stray shots during the winter months.<br />

What programs are there at Macdonald Hill<br />

Valley Hotel, Golf & Spa for junior golfers?<br />

The Sapphire Course provides an ideal<br />

opportunity for junior golfers to get involved in<br />

the game as it's relatively short, so you don’t have<br />

to hit the ball long distances, but the tree-lined<br />

fairways help to promote accuracy from the tee,<br />

which is a great lesson to learn.<br />

Encouraging more juniors to take up the game<br />

is something I am passionate about, so in <strong>2017</strong><br />

I will be looking to introduce a number of junior<br />

classes and to work with local schools in order<br />

to attract the next generation of golfer.<br />

Have you ever made a hole-in-one? If so,<br />

what course and how did you celebrate?<br />

I have only ever had one hole-in-one and it<br />

was while I was playing socially with friends and<br />

aside from a few high-fives, the celebrations<br />

were fairly relaxed.<br />

However, I remember it was slightly different<br />

when I made an albatross on the 8th hole at<br />

Hawkstone Park Club, where I holed my second<br />

shot from about 220 yards. I celebrated by<br />

jumping up and down for about five minutes!<br />

How old were you when you first started<br />

playing golf?<br />

I played a number of different sports growing<br />

up, including football, tennis, table tennis and<br />

golf. My mum and dad were both keen golfers<br />

and I remember I first started playing with them<br />

when I was eight years old. I then got my first<br />

set of clubs when I was nine and then by the<br />

age of 12 I began to concentrate fully on golf<br />

and have loved it ever since.<br />

When you were at school, what did you want<br />

to be when you grew up?<br />

Growing up I knew I always wanted to be involved<br />

with sport in some way as it was such a huge part<br />

of my life. Being able to now have a job doing<br />

something I love is fantastic.<br />

What future plans do you have for the golf<br />

course?<br />

We have an on-going commitment to ensuring<br />

the courses remain in prime condition throughout<br />

the year and we completed a number of<br />

enhancements, including bunker renovation,<br />

greens project works and pathway redevelopment<br />

at the end of 2016, all designed to further enhance<br />

playing conditions and the overall customer<br />

experience.<br />

We're confident the upgrades will help showcase<br />

both courses in their best condition for the <strong>2017</strong><br />

season and beyond, ensuring both the Emerald<br />

and Sapphire are must-play courses for visiting<br />

golfers.<br />

What is the most popular post-round menu<br />

in the clubhouse?<br />

We have a number of food options available<br />

for golfers, from eating in the relaxed Sports or<br />

Lounge Bars, to dining in the more formal Border’s<br />

Restaurant, which serves a range of modern<br />

dishes, all prepared from the finest ingredients.<br />

However, despite all of the options available, the<br />

most popular post-round dish for visiting golfers<br />

is, without question, the fish and chips!<br />

Who is your golf hero and why?<br />

Tiger Woods. There is little I can say about him<br />

that hasn’t already been said, but he has had<br />

such a dramatic influence on the game and has<br />

inspired a generation of golfers to play a sport<br />

they might not have considered previously.<br />

Jonathan Bradwell from The Earl of<br />

Doncaster Hotel combines marketing<br />

and e-commerce with public and guest<br />

relations at the South Yorkshire venue,<br />

which boasts a unique Art Deco style<br />

guaranteed to impress guests and<br />

delegates.<br />

What does your typical week at work<br />

involve?<br />

I work in a fantastic, fast paced environment<br />

where the week varies depending on our<br />

marketing objectives.<br />

Every day I look after our social media channels<br />

and update and maintain our website. As well<br />

as having a hotel with excellent meeting and<br />

conference facilities, we're used for weddings,<br />

dining and special events and it's my<br />

responsibility to develop our marketing<br />

strategies for each of these areas of business.<br />

I also oversee any public relations requirements<br />

that arise.<br />

What has been the highlight of your career<br />

so far?<br />

It has to be when the The Earl of Doncaster<br />

Hotel’s sales & marketing department won<br />

the Doncaster Chamber Business Awards for<br />

Excellence in Marketing & Communications.<br />

We had previously been nominated as a<br />

finalist, so it was great last year when we won<br />

the award. It was excellent to have the team<br />

recognised for the developments we've made<br />

and as the awards were in December, it was<br />

a fabulous way to finish what was a very<br />

successful year.<br />

How did you get into the leisure industry?<br />

After studying Journalism at degree level in<br />

Edinburgh, I moved back to South Yorkshire<br />

and took my first role at The Earl of Doncaster<br />

Hotel as a Marketing, Sales & Social Media<br />

Assistant. I've always had a keen interest in the<br />

leisure industry and the role at the hotel was a<br />

fantastic opportunity for me. Two years have<br />

passed and I am now the Marketing and<br />

E-Commerce Manager.<br />

Why should an Event Organiser use<br />

The Earl of Doncaster for their next event?<br />

The hotel is conveniently located within a 20<br />

minute drive of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, a ten<br />

minute drive from Doncaster Train Station, and<br />

within walking distance of the town centre so it's<br />

in a great position.<br />

We have a dedicated events team to take care<br />

of organiser's needs, a Ballroom capable of<br />

hosting 250 delegates, 73 distinctly decorated<br />

bedrooms, the on-site Cafe Bar Concerto<br />

restaurant and our team of chefs who will<br />

create delegate menus from locally sourced,<br />

fresh ingredients - it's a perfect combination!<br />

Industry Interview<br />

The past few years have seen a lot of<br />

changes at the hotel. Which areas have<br />

been refurbished and can you tell us a little<br />

about the design?<br />

The most significant refurbishment was to our<br />

Concorde Suite, a room used for weddings,<br />

celebrations and conferences. The traditional<br />

looking décor, which included a carpeted floor,<br />

has been replaced with a marble effect floor,<br />

a customised lighting system and bright,<br />

crisp whites and creams. The design is<br />

now completely in keeping with the rest of<br />

the hotel and with it's built-in bar, it's ideal for<br />

birthdays, anniversaries and award evenings.<br />

In the next few weeks we're planning to install<br />

a state-of-the-art interactive screen which can<br />

be used for conference calls and presentations.<br />

We're also finalising the ‘show kitchen’ which<br />

can be opened up to become part of the room<br />

and offer guests a unique visual experience<br />

when dining at functions.<br />

Which refurbished area is your favourite?<br />

Our bedrooms are truly unique, with many of<br />

them incorporating the distinct art deco feel of<br />

the hotel. Our Executive Bedrooms are individual<br />

in colour, offer a large king size bed, table and<br />

chairs as well as quality bed covers with<br />

‘The Earl’ customised pillow cases.<br />

What do you love to do when not working?<br />

I like to keep and learn about reptiles,<br />

amphibians and fish. I currently have a Bearded<br />

Dragon, Gray Tree Frog and a River Loach.<br />

Exotic animals and aquariums are very rewarding<br />

to look after and something I've been interested<br />

in for some years now.<br />

I help out at a local dog rescue centre, walking<br />

the dogs on Saturdays to help them stay healthy<br />

and exercised. I also enjoy playing the guitar,<br />

listening to music and watching martial arts.<br />

What sets the Earl of Doncaster apart from<br />

other hotels in the area?<br />

Although the hotel has undergone a massive<br />

transformation since it originally opened in<br />

1938, the art deco charm and character has<br />

very much remained a part of the guest’s<br />

experience. The entire team here are very<br />

enthusiastic about the property, and I believe<br />

this shows in the genuinely warm welcome<br />

every guest receives.<br />

We're also in an excellent location in Doncaster,<br />

both within a reasonably short distance to the<br />

town centre and within driving distance of a<br />

variety of excellent visitor attractions.<br />
