Bicycle aftermarket component 

manufacturer, Hope Technology Ltd, 

employs around 130 people and exports half 

of its rapidly expanding production to more 

than 40 countries. The successful British 

manufacturer’s business, which was founded 

in 1989, was based on a quest to make 

mountain biking safer by developing an 

alternative to cantilever brakes. 

Founders Ian Weatherill and the late 

Simon Sharp, ex Rolls-Royce aero engineers 

and toolmakers, developed a disc brake 

along the lines of those used on motorcycles. 

Today, the top quality brakes are 

manufactured in their tens of thousands 

annually, along with sprockets, chainrings 

and virtually every other component that 

goes onto a mountain bike, as a visit to 

www.hopetech.com will attest. 

To meet demand, the Barnoldswick 

factory in Lancashire operates around the 

clock. Even so, by mid-2015 one of the 70 

CNC machine tools on the shop floor, a 

BySprint CO2 laser cutting machine from 

Bystronic UK (www.bystronic.co.uk), was 

struggling to keep up. Hope Technology's 

works and production manager, Lindley 

Pate, knew that fibre laser cutting was a 

maturing technology and decided that the 

time was right to make the change. A 4 kW 

BySprint Fiber 3015 machine was duly 

installed. 

He explained, “We use relatively thin 

materials, such as 2 mm stainless steel for 

brake discs and up to 6 mm aluminium for 

some sprockets. For thinner gauges, 

compared with an equivalent CO2 source, 

the fibre laser produces components three 

times faster. It has made a fantastic difference 

in helping us to meet the sheer volume of 

orders.” 

The machine is equally capable of 

handling much thicker material. Hope often 

processes 12 mm thick aluminium tooling 

plate to produce fixtures for other machines 

on the shop floor. 

A further advantage of fibre laser cutting, 

according to Mr Pate, is the high quality of 

cut using exclusively nitrogen as the cutting 

gas. He said, “The as-machined edges on 

stainless steel appear polished, so brake discs 

for example need no edge finishing. They go 

straight to on-site heat treatment. 

“This is in contrast to production on the 

previous CO2 machine, which left a residue 

even when nitrogen was used. Oxygen as the 

cutting gas is not used at all here to avoid the 

problems associated with oxidation of the cut 

metal edges.” 

He added that other factors in favour of 

fibre laser cutting over CO2 are more 

consistent accuracy, less machine 

maintenance and more economical running 

costs, both in terms of the amount of 

electricity used and the lower requirement 

for cutting gases. There is now no need to use 

helium gas at all, which runs all the time on a 

CO2 laser machine, resulting in a further 

significant saving.

master appoints new technical 

sales representative 

Master Abrasives has appointed Joe Phillips as its new technical 

sales representative for the South. 

Joe will initially be working in the South East but will also be 

spending time with technical sales representative Ken Hoskins over 

the coming months with the aim of providing support for the entire 

Southern territory when Ken retires in June 2017. 

Paul Batson, Managing Director, explains: “Joe has gained 

valuable experience in grinding and finishing applications during 

the time he has worked in the abrasive industry. He’s going to be a

Citizen Machinery UK has created the next 

generation of its senior management team 

drawn from a trio of internal promotions that 

have contributed more than 60 years of 

experience in building the continued success 

of the Citizen and Miyano brands. 

Geoff Bryant, who was recently appointed 

President of the MTA, has relinquished his 

role as managing director to Edward James 

who joined Citizen in 2012. Darren Wilkins 

now becomes Deputy Managing Director 

with sole responsibility for sales and 

marketing and is a director of Citizen 

Macchine Italia, the Groups Italian operation. 

Jon Hart is now Finance and Administration 

Director. Mr Bryant will continue as business 

advisor to the new team. 

Said Mr James: “This is an exciting time to 

establish the future progression of the 

business based on the cultivation of the new 

management team by Mr Bryant with full 

support from Japan.” 

Citizen Machinery UK employs 48 people 

and has recently expanded its sales team to 

support the growth in the range of machines 

available and technology involved as well as 

the expanding customer base. 

Edward James is 47 and is using his 

background of five years as technical 

manager responsible for UK and Ireland to 

further build the business into a turn-key 

solution centre. He is also planning to 

streamline the sales and customer support 

process in response to the ever-changing 

needs of customers in the subcontract and 

OEM sectors. 

He said: “The latest technical 

developments mean the business is still 

growing with sales on course to meet 

projected increases for 2017 between 25 and 

30 per cent over the previous year.”

Mitsui Seiki describes its ‘Ultimate Mother 

Machine’ being able to realise jig borer levels 

of positional accuracy within +/- 1 micron 

with the ability to contour with ultra-high 

accuracy due to the introduction of MAMS 

(Mitsui Accurate Milling Support) thermal 

monitoring system. The ‘Mother Machine’ 

term is widely used in Japan to describe an 

‘ultra-high accuracy’ machine tool with the 

capability to produce critical features on 

further machine tools that have high 

accuracy potential. 

Available through 2D CNC Machinery 

based in Hinckley, the Mitsui Seiki PJ812 

vertical spindle precision profiling centre has 

been developed to accommodate higher 

precision machining demands such as those 

required in machine tool and quality 

equipment, aerospace and defence, medical, 

optical and specific mould and die 

applications. 

Here, the combined advantage of high 

static rigidity, some six times greater than a 

conventional vertical machining centre, has 

been built into the 3-axis machine frame with 

the absolute benefit of thermal growth and 

deflection control that is greater by some 30 

per cent over previous ‘incorporated’ 

production machine technologies. 

MAMS is a multi-sensor based thermal 

growth monitoring system able to minimise 

the influence of temperature changes on 

workpiece accuracy and cut temperature 

generated displacement by up to 60 per cent. 

This system is also able to control the thermal 

growth and deflection in the Z-axis by some 

30 per cent compared with previous 

generation technologies employed. 

Further contributing to higher accuracy 

‘Mother Machine’ capability is a planer-style 

symmetric construction with hardened and 

ground steel slideways and special contact 

elements to enhance acceleration. Mitsui 

Seiki’s latest development of a ‘sliding 

mechanism’ that is able to reduce ‘stick-slip’ 

helps achieve an accuracy of 0.1 micron for 

axis feed. The PJ812 also has centralised 

coolant system for its ballscrews to stabilise 

the precision of axis feeds, slideway 

lubrication and other critical surfaces. As a 

result, heat deformation is reduced and the 

distance between the Z-axis drive and the 

spindle is minimised.

As a best-selling cutter in the portfolio of 

aluminium machining end mills from 

Industrial Tooling Corporation (ITC), the 

3081 Cyber Series has now been extended 

with a variety of corner radii. The 

development engineers at ITC have worked 

closely with end users to further enhance this 

already exceptional line of solid carbide line 

of end mills. 

Until now, the three fluted centre cutting 

3081 Series from ITC was available in 

diameters from 3 to 20mm with an optimised 

cut length from 12 to 40mm. The enhanced 

tool geometry and cut length combines with 

polished high-helix flutes to demonstrate 

impressive material removal rates, chip 

evacuation and tool life. For customers that 

wanted to extend tool life further, the 3081 

Series also has the option of a DLC coating 

for more abrasive applications. 

Now, the Tamworth manufacturer has 

extended the range by adding a series of 

corner radii to each diameter increment. The 

market leading series is available in 

diameters of 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 and 20mm. 

Whilst the new additions retain the same 

diameter range; the series has been more 

than quadrupled in size to accommodate at 

least four corner radii for each tool diameter. 

Tool diameters from 3 to 5mm are now 

offered with a 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1mm radius.

incorporate these radius increments whilst 

extending the radius options with 0.25 and 

0.5mm increments up to a

Every micron counts when it comes to honing 

high-precision components, such as those 

required for fuel injection systems or hydraulic 

applications. To meet the high quality 

requirements, honing machine manufacturer 

KADIA Produktion in Nürtingen, Germany, 

uses direct drive technology to power the 

company’s LH (Lean-Highspeed) spindles and 

their stroke. 

The first LH honing spindles for small to 

medium diameters were introduced and 

patented in 2004. For the first time, they used 

direct drive for the stroke move-ment via a 

wear-free linear motor. The design offers high 

material removal rates and imparts almost no 

vibrations to the honing tool, improving 

accuracy. A direct-drive, synchronous, built-in 

motor provides the spindle drive and offers 

similar advantages. The honing stones are 

expanded electromechanically in increments 

Five different grades of RDMT button-style 

indexable milling inserts for carbon, alloy and 

stainless steels as well as cast iron are added to 

the high performance milling portfolio of 

Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal. The new inserts 

span application advantages where benefits 

from high wear resistance to high resistance to 

insert fracturing are required. 

Available in sizes of 8, 10, 12 and 16 mm 

inscribed circle, the five grades cover physical 

vapour deposition (PVD) coated ACP100, 200 

and 300 and chemical vapour deposition (CVD) 

coated ACK200 and 300. 

The ACP100 for cutting steel and ACK200 

grades for cast iron incorporate Sumitomo’s 

Super FF ultra-hard coating that employs a 

tough carbide substrate with an ultra-fine TiCN 

crystal structure. It has an ultra-smooth alumina 

on the surface and faces of the insert. This 

amalgamation of coating combinations enable 

up to 1.5 times greater efficiency in machining 

and provides more than a doubling of tool life 

over conventional grades under normal cutting 

conditions. The coated surface also has excellent 

chipping resistance and improved adhesion 

strengths. 

The ACP200 and 300 grades for milling steel 

and ACK300 for cast iron employs Sumitomo’s 

Super ZX multi-layer nano technology coating 

which combines alternating 10 nanometre thin 

measured in nanometres by means of a highresolution 

servomotor. KADIA has arranged 

the spindle motor and the expansion motor 

coaxially, one above the other and close to the 

linear drive, resulting in a compact and 

powerful system. The innovative concept is 

completed by an internal coolant supply.

ESAB has donated a Thermal Arc Fabricator 

252i welding machine and Tweco Fusion 250 

MIG welding torch to Key Enterprises, an 

independent Registered Charity based in North 

Tyneside that provides purposeful occupational 

training and support for people with mental 

health problems, learning disabilities and 

learning needs. The charity had needed a new 

welding machine for several years but, because 

of a lack of funds, was unable to purchase one. 

The machine provided free of charge by ESAB 

has made a substantial difference to the 

charity’s trainees in the metalwork department. 

Within the metalwork department, welding 

is very important. Unfortunately the old 

transformer-style 170A welding set had become 

very unreliable, so the charity had wanted to 

replace it for several years. Initially Gary Smith, 

the Metalwork Supervisor, contacted ESAB 

who suggested that they could donate a 

Fabricator 252i from the Victor Technologies 

Thermal Arc range (Victor Technologies is now 

part of the ESAB Group). 

The Thermal Arc Fabricator 252i is a 

modern, compact, portable, inverter-based 

welding power source that can be used for MIG, 

DC TIG and stick (MMA) welding, though Key 

Enterprises will initially be using it only for 

MIG, hence ESAB also provided a Victor 

Technologies Tweco Fusion 250 MIG welding 

torch. Thanks to the inverter technology, the 

new welding machine is far more controllable 

than the one it is replacing, plus it is more 

powerful. 

Gary Smith comments: “We are using the 

Fabricator 252i for both training and fabrication 

of custom metalwork and it is 100 per cent 

better than the old welding machine. Also, the 

old machine was repeatedly breaking down, so 

having a reliable piece of equipment is such an 

asset.”

LASER, PLASMA & WATER JET CUTTING 

CHANGING OF THE GUARD 

In further evidence that fibre laser 

technology has taken over from CO2 when 

cutting sheet metal and plate, Bystronic UK 

has revealed that since August 2015 the 

company has not sold a single CO2 laser 

cutting machine in Britain or Ireland. 

Conversely, fibre laser cutters have sold well. 

In November and December 2016 alone, 

orders for 14 were taken. Two of the 

machines were 8kW, with a further five 

equipped with a 10kW fibre laser source. 

Among the latest takers is bicycle 

aftermarket component manufacturer, Hope 

Technology, based in Barnoldswick, which 

has installed a 4kW BySprint Fiber 3015. 

“We use relatively thin materials, such as 

2mm stainless steel for brake discs and up to 

6mm aluminium for some sprockets,” 

explains production manager Lindley Pate. 

“For thinner gauges, compared with an 

equivalent CO2 source, the fibre laser 

produces components three times faster. It 

has made a fantastic difference in helping us 

to meet growing order volumes.” 

The machine is equally capable of 

handling much thicker material. Hope often 

processes 12mm thick aluminium tooling 

plate to produce fixtures for other machines 

on the shop floor. 

A further advantage of fibre laser cutting, 

according to Mr Pate, is the high quality of 

cut using nitrogen as the cutting gas: “The asmachined 

edges on stainless steel appear 

polished, so brake discs, for example, need 

no edge finishing. They go straight to heat 

treatment.” 

Elsewhere, Nottingham-based Goodman 

Metal Works has recently taken delivery of 

the UK’s first Prima Power 4 x 2m capacity 

Laser Genius. The 6kW fibre laser cutter is 

capable of processing 25mm thick mild steel 

and 20mm stainless steel. 

“With a tolerance accuracy of 0.03mm, our 

new Laser Genius machine provides the 

flexibility we need,” says managing director 

Richard Goodman. “In addition, while the 

quality of our output and the speed of our 

production systems assists customers, it is 

critical that we are able to quote competitive 

prices. Compared with modern systems, our 

previous laser cutting machine was proving 

uneconomical in terms of its consumption of 

electric and gas, while its maintenance costs 

were continually rising. Now, the use of our 

Prima Laser Genius machine has considerably 

improved efficiencies in all of these areas.” 

Clearly, fibre laser profiling technology is 

in high demand, a fact also confirmed by 

Yamazaki Mazak, which announced a record 

year in 2016 for sales of laser machines in the 

UK. Mazak says the growth has been 

achieved across a variety of sectors, with 

particularly strong performance in 

construction and general subcontracting – 

the company’s 6kW Optiplex 3015 Fiber II 

has proved the stand-out performer. 

This year, Mazak is looking to introduce a 

number of new products, including Direct 

Diode Laser (DDL) technology, the Super 

Turbo-X 3015 Fiber and new laser 

automation systems. With regard to the 

latter, Mazak’s latest Quick Cell laser 

automation technology is available in three 

different specifications: six-pallet, 10-pallet 

and 14-pallet. It offers loader/unloader 

travelling speeds of 54m/min and an 

elevating speed of 8m/min, along with a 

sheet change time of circa 60 seconds 

depending on sheet size. 

Over at Amada, development efforts have 

yielded the just-released LCG-AJ flat-bed 

laser cutter, which can be equipped with the 

company’s own 2, 3, 4, 6 and 9kW oscillators. 

Most models incorporate an automatic 

nozzle changer for uninterrupted processing, 

and all are compatible with Amada’s Digital 

Support System (ADSS), which facilitates the 

delivery of service support and allows 

customers to analyse and compare machine 

performance. Furthermore, LCG-3015AJ 

machines are fully compatible with Amada’s 

latest part-picking system, the TK L. 

LVD, too, has expanded its fibre laser 

cutting machine portfolio with the 

introduction of the Phoenix FL 4020 and 

Phoenix FL 6020, which are designed to 

handle sheet dimensions of 4000 x 2000mm 

and 6000 x 2000mm respectively. Available 

in 3, 4 and 6kW versions, the latest Phoenix 

models are said to achieve superior cut 

quality through a cutting-head design that 

allows automatic adjustment of focus 

position and focus diameter, known as ‘zoom 

focus’. Additionally, to achieve the highest 

speed on every material thickness, focus 

position and diameter are automatically 

controlled and adjusted by the CNC. 

The increasing popularity of fibre lasers in 

the UK market has led to a boom in business 

for MSS Nitrogen’s Nitrocube Fiber nitrogen 

generators, which are based on a modular, 

plug and play design. Compressed air goes 

into the system and high-purity nitrogen 

comes out. Among the growing list of 

customers is ES Solutions, based in Beeston. 

Managing director Eric Seymour says: “We 

purchased the very first MSS nitrogen 

generator back in 2004. However, the new 

Nitrocube Fiber is a fraction of the size, far 

more efficient and saves us a significant 

amount of money each month. Nitrogen 

generation is definitely the way forward, 

especially for fibre lasers.” 

Of course, laser cutting is not the only 

profiling technology performing strongly at 

present; the demand for plasma cutters 

continues apace. This is evidenced by 

Ballymena-based Arcon Engineering, which 

has recently invested in a RUR3500P machine 

from Kerf Developments that features a 

Lincoln Electric Spirit 400 Amp plasma unit 

with Ultrasharp technology. Arcon says that 

the machine is powerful enough to cut 

through material far beyond the scope of a 

laser. In addition, the system incorporates a 

water reservoir that keeps the cutting torches 

cool and extends the life of consumables. 

Also featured is technology that is said to use 

up to 78% less plasma gas than competitor 

machines. 

Elsewhere on the plasma front, 

Hypertherm has just announced its most 

significant advance in mechanised plasma 

cutting ever, with the introduction of an 

entirely new class of plasma called X- 

Definition. This new plasma is available for 

the first time in a 300 Amp system called the 

XPR300. 

Finally, from a waterjet perspective, Flow 

has recently released Compass, a contourfollowing 

and collision-sensing solution. 

Compass automatically makes cutting-head 

height adjustments in real time to allow 

precision cutting, even if the raw material is 

not truly flat; the cutting head always 

maintains the correct stand-off height from 

the material. 

It seems whatever the profiling 

requirement, there is today a host of fast, 

precise and reliable technologies able to help 

profiling and fabrication shops achieve 

genuine competitive gain.

In further evidence that fibre laser technology 

has taken over from the CO2 laser power source 

when cutting sheet metal and plate into 

components of simple or complex shape, David 

Larcombe, managing director of Bystronic UK, 

revealed that since August 2015 the company 

has not sold a single CO2 laser cutting machine 

in Britain or Ireland. 

In contrast, fibre laser cutters have sold well. 

In November and December 2016 alone, orders 

for 14 were taken, half of which were for highpower 

models launched at the EuroBlech show 

in Hannover at the end of October last year. 

Two of the seven high-power machines were 8 

kW, with the remainder equipped with the 10 

kW fibre laser source, the most powerful 

currently available on the UK market. 

As a point of comparison, Mr Larcombe 

said, “Of the seven lower-power fibre laser 

machines we sold during the last two months of 

2016, five were 6 kW, while the other two were 

rated at 4 kW and 2 kW. There is still a demand 

for the latter, competitively priced fibre models 

from manufacturers processing only thinner 

gauge materials.” 

Nevertheless, he thinks that higher power 

fibre laser machines are the future, as they can 

cut thicker plate and produce superior quality 

edge. The 10 kW fibre source is able to process 

25 mm mild steel and 30 mm stainless steel and 

aluminium. Fibre also allows reflective

faster than with a 6 kW fibre laser, providing a 

massive boost to productivity.

AMADA’s latest line-up of LCG-AJ flatbed 

laser cutting machines are equipped with 

AMADA developed 2, 3,4, 6 and 9 kW fibre 

laser oscillators. AMADA were the first laser 

machine manufacturer to develop their own 

fibre laser source. Manufacturing and testing 

takes place at AMADA’s Fujinomiya factory 

and incorporates all of AMADA’s extensive 

knowledge gained over more than 35 years of 

laser machine production.

radan intelligent nesting 

“Vital” for norlec 

One of the UK’s largest sheet metal 

subcontractors says the Project Nesting function 

in the world’s most powerful sheet metal 

CAD/CAM software, Radan, is essential for 

keeping the company competitive. 

And John Haworth, Managing Director of 

Norlec, says it is also a vital aspect of their 

manufacturing flexibility. 

“Customers want shorter lead times and 

smaller batch quantities, so our days of big 

production runs and nesting the same 

components on one full sheet are long gone. 

Thanks to the intelligent nesting in Radan we’re 

constantly able to nest different components 

from a variety of customers on one sheet.” 

“It’s so easy with Radan nests to fit small 

parts on to sheets of much larger components, 

which means we’re getting more than 80 per 

cent sheet utilisation instead of around 60 or 70 

per cent which we were getting before.” 

As well as flexibility, he says maximising 

sheet utilisation is also an important financial 

consideration, as steel prices are rising. “The 

more efficient we are with steel usage the better, 

because we pass that cost saving on to 

customers, making us much more competitive.” 

The company, operating out of 50,000 

square foot premises in Leyland in Lancashire, 

have recently added to their array of laser 

cutters, punch presses and press brakes, with 

the arrival of a Trumpf 3030 4kw fibre laser and 

fully automatic sheet stacker which can work 

with 33 tonnes of steel, unmanned, overnight 

and at weekends. 

He says they invested in the fibre laser 

because it cuts thinner gauge material faster 

than conventional lasers, and most of their 

metal is 5 mm or less. At the other end of the 

scale it will cut up to 25 mm thicknesses, along 

with copper and brass which, previously, they 

always had to punch. They have also installed a 

Nitrogen generator, as he says cutting with 

Nitrogen improves the painting process further 

along their production line. 

And as Radan drives all their CNC machine 

tools, John Haworth says they also instructed 

Radan engineers to draw up the post processor 

for the new laser. “Having Radan post 

processors for all our machines is ideal, as it 

means we only need to have one kind of symbol 

for a part – we don’t need to change multiple 

symbols, and can simply send the code to a 

punch press or a laser.” 

He says that overall, Radan helps them 

overcome their biggest challenge, which he says 

is the speed required from the time the product 

is ordered, through to completing manufacture 

and shipping it out to the customer.

Yamazaki Mazak has enhanced its laser 

automation offering for the UK market 

following the introduction of a new materials 

handling solution. 

First unveiled at EuroBLECH 2016, Mazak’s 

new QUICK CELL laser automation technology 

is ideal for volume production operations and is 

available in three different specifications, a 6- 

pallet, 10-pallet and 14-pallet variants. 

The new QUICK CELL technology, which is 

capable of significantly faster processing speeds 

compared to the original design, has a 

loader/unloader travelling speed of 54m/min 

and an elevating speed of 8m/min, along with a 

sheet change time of circa 60 seconds 

depending on sheet size. 

The QUICK CELL is perfectly suited to 

unmanned laser cutting operations, with the 

next operating pallet being prepared during 

processing. The new pallet is loaded as soon as 

the cutting process is complete, with the used 

pallet moved to the stocker. 

Designed by famed Japanese industrial 

designer Ken Okuyama, QUICK CELL boasts a 

compact floorspace and can be easily expanded 

after the initial installation. The technology can 

be used with OPTIPLEX CO2, Fiber and DDL 

machines, and with OPTIPLEX NEXUS CO2 

and Fiber machines.

arc and much less spatter even at high welding 

speeds. It can be used for a wide variety of 

different applications, including welding light 

and medium-gauge sheets from 0.5 - 4 mm, root 

passes, galvanized steel applications and 

special connections such as copper, zinc, steelaluminium

usually afforded to this are no longer necessary, 

but also the consumables that would be used, 

sanding belts/disks, drill bits!, grinding wheels

With the introduction of the drylin SLTI3 

linear axis, motion plastics specialist igus is 

taking a completely new approach to drive 

technology. By enabling machine builders to 

3D print the carriage and end blocks from 

high-performance iglidur I3 tribo-SLS 

material, igus offers the highest degree of 

variability in linear axis design. Produced 

within 48 hours of order placement, these 

self-lubricating and maintenance-free lead 

screw units can be built cost-effectively and 

to customer requirements. 

“The purpose of developing the SLTI3 

lead screw unit was to enable quick and very 

easy assembly, with the maximum possible 

variability,” says Robert Dumayne, dry-tech 

director, igus. “We also reduced the 

component count, compared to our standard 

SLT module, enabling it to be assembled in 

seconds.” 

Self-lubricating and maintenance-free 

linear axes from igus are already the core 

components of many automation tasks in 

beverage and food processing. Among them 

is the drylin SLT series, which features a side 

mounted lead screw configuration and is 

available as a manual or motor powered 

system. The drylin SLTI3 lead screw unit 

augments this series with a very flexible 

system. 

The machine builder not only receives the 

custom-made lead screw unit in a very short 

time, but ideas for new profile designs, 

stroke lengths or fastening options can also 

be easily implemented. The iglidur I3 

material used in the drylin SLTI3 lead screw 

unit, which was developed by igus for 

selective laser sintering, enables even the

big kaiser centring tool for 

unrivalled ease of use 

Industrial Tooling Corporation (ITC) has 

now announced the launch of a new compact 

centring tool designed for small lathes and 

turning centres, the BIG KAISER CTL-90. 

The new innovation from BIG KAISER 

has a stationary dial gauge that faces the 

machine operator at all times, rather than 

rotating with the spindle of the lathe. This 

significantly simplifies the tool and lathe 

chuck centring process, thereby saving 

valuable set-up time and improving operator 

productivity. In fact, machine setting can 

now be conducted from outside the machine 

when using the CTL-90. This makes the new 

setting device significantly safer than dial 

indicators that require the machine setter to 

lean into the work envelope. 

The fine adjustment mechanism on the 

tool enables precise adjustment to within 

10microns with a stroke of 2mm. Setting can 

be achieved with the spindle rotating at a 

speed up to a maximum of 100rpm. With a 

magnetic base to make the task of tool 

mounting incredibly simple, the CTL-90 

expands the operator's options with various 

mounting positions. The centring tool weighs 

0.4 kg and consists of a dial indicator, 

magnet, adjustment bolt, stylus and a 

counter-balance weight.

multiple machines at once, ease of use is truly

always visible and legible, this new centring

Horn has launched a new, extensive 

range of solid carbide milling cutters 

designed specifically for machining 

titanium alloys such as Ti6Al4V. The 

programme comprises cutters with 

diameters from 2 mm to 20 mm, 

available in four and five flute 

geometries with a cutting edge length of 

2 x D and 3 x D. 

The newly developed grade TSTK that 

Horn has introduced is specifically 

intended for machining titanium, widely 

used in the aerospace and medical 

industries. As well as offering good 

tribological properties and high 

temperature resistance, the material 

transmits minimal heat into the substrate 

and acts as a kind of thermal shield. 

Further important characteristics of 

the newly designed solid carbide end 

mills are alternative helix angles and 

pitches to ensure a softer, more gentle cut, 

therefore eliminating vibration and 

chatter. As titanium’s low thermal 

conductivity makes it difficult to remove 

heat from the point of cutting, a copious 

supply of coolant directly to the cutting 

edge is essential.

SECO’S DISC MIll CuTTER RANGE EVEN 

MORE ATTRACTIVE AND AppEAlING 

A six-edged, indexable grooving insert for 

turning has been added to the Horn family of 

carbide tooling. Designated 64T, the 

precision sintered inserts are available with a 

grooving width of up to 3.29 mm, with 

geometry .00. Grooving depths up to 3.5 mm 

is possible and maximum workpiece 

diameter is 65 mm. 

As a neutral grooving insert, the 64T can 

be used on either the left or right hand holder 

measuring 16 mm x 16 mm, 20 mm x 20 mm 

or 25 mm x 25 mm with internal cooling. A 

clamping screw system holds the insert 

accurately in the pocket ensuring rigidity 

and repeatability. 

The new grade, EG55 high-performance 

coating considerably improves tool life and 

makes the grooving insert the perfect allround 

choice for machining most types of 

steel as well as a wide range of other 

materials.

The Gantry Loader model also provides 

manufacturers with high-speed and reliable 

part load/unload capability. 

The TW 2600 and TW 2600-GL machines 

are equipped with a 10” chuck as standard 

and boast rapid rates of 24m/min (X- and Y- 

axes) for increased productivity. The 

machines are compact yet still offer a 

maximum turning diameter of 360mm and 

maximum tuning length of 170mm (for the 

standard TW 2600 machine); and 200mm and 

165mm, with the TW 2600-GL. 

Performance and flexibility are also 

assured via the machines’ advanced, hightorque 

(404Nm) spindle technology which 

provide power and speed (up to 

18.5kW/3500rpm), and is ideal for heavyduty 

machining operations. 

The machines are also equipped with two 

10-position servo-driven turrets that ensure 

fast tool indexing and minimise idle (noncutting) 

time. 

Whilst the TW 2600 delivers exceptional 

productivity the TW 2600-GL, with its 

integrated Gantry Loader, takes this to a 

whole new level. 

The 3-axis, servo-driven gantry loader 

integrated on the TW 2600-GL minimises 

work load and unloading times, and can be 

configured to suit customers requirements 

(i.e. workpiece feeding, unloading and 

storing positioned left, right or on both sides 

of the machine). 

TW-series machines are also supplied 

with the Doosan Fanuc i control system and 

Doosan’s Easy Operation Package (EOP) for 

fast and easy set-up and programming.
