Secretary’s Report
Our Association has had another very good
year and I am happy to report that the Service
Dog Trails were a resounding success. It is
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Well here we are again nearing Christmas and
the end of another year.
This year has seen the sad loss of Neil Yates
which was a blow to us as an Association
as well as losing a friend and colleague,
but on a good note it has also seen a much
more supported Association with new faces
appearing at meetings and the Service Dog
Competition.
A special thanks to Peter Taylor for the
work he has put in as Secretary and again
to Keith Long for volunteering to take on the
Editors post.
With the heightened terrorist threat and the
Iraq war it has placed even greater demand on
our service colleagues both here and abroad
but what it has done as well is show that there
is still little that can compete with the dog for
quick and effi cient searching.
In the terrible scenes of the London bombings
it was reassuring to see that some of the fi rst
responses was from the search dog teams
as it was in the after mass of the earthquake
in Pakistan and beyond, who could describe
what it must feel like after being buried alive to
satisfying to observe the camaraderie that is
very evident between all the competitors taking
part, irrespective of the service they represent;
this is a credit to everyone concerned.
I would like to thank the members of the
committee for the commitment they have
once again shown to the Association. Their
dedication is the reason for our success.
The festive season is almost upon us and the
children are getting excited and wondering what
Father Christmas will be bringing them.
I hope that he is kind to you and your wishes
come true, for myself, well I wish for a shrinking
waistline!
On behalf of all your committee may I wish you
and yours a very happy Christmas.
God bless.
Peter Taylor
Secretary
hear that search dog somewhere above you
searching and fi nding you.
To dog handlers, both serving and retired, and
their families everywhere I hope you all have a
very happy and quiet festive season and that
obviously goes to all of your dogs as well.
The BPSCA Charity
Owing to the generosity of Neil’s
family, friends and colleagues the
sum of £1,370 has now been
donated to Canine Partners. With
other events our charity team
have raised a total of £2352.60
Two puppies have been
selected for training YARKA a
Golden Retriever and YODA a
Golden Labrador.
An example of how the charity helps Suzi
and Canine Partner Lex.
Lex is a male yellow Labrador and is partnered
with Suzi who lives in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Suzi
originally lived in Gosport as she was in the
Royal Navy but was medically discharged due
to a spinal injury (traumatic mechanical back
pain and chronic pain syndrome) following an
accident which occurred in 1998. Suzi’s injury
means that she has a great deal of pain when
walking and cannot balance unaided, she also
requires a great deal of assistance with many
day to day tasks.
Suzi’s injury caused her to feel vulnerable
and she became very reclusive and was often
at home alone as her then husband was also
serving in the Royal Navy. Prior to her injury Suzi
had been a keen sportswoman and regularly
sailed and rode horses of which she owned two,
all of this stopped after she was confi ned to a
wheelchair and she had to give up the horses
6 The Service Dog
In Memory-Neil Yates
Yoda
and the life she had previously loved. In 2001,
Suzi heard about Canine Partners and decided
to apply for a dog to give her companionship
and to help her become more confi dent so
that she could resume some of her previous
sporting activities and hopefully go back to her
original trade of being a saddler.
Suzi moved to London during her application
process when her marriage broke down but
found life in London too diffi cult in a wheelchair.
Suzi faced many problems with accessibility
and felt that bringing an assistance dog into her
life would not be right for them while living in
London. Suzi then made the decision to move
to Norfolk, where she felt she would have a
happier life and a much better quality of life.
Suzi and Lex graduated in 2002 and they have
an excellent relationship. Lex has defi nitely
helped to resume her confi dence! Lex is helping
her with many tasks that she cannot do herself
when her spinal pain is too bad, such as helping

Yarka
with the weekly shopping, getting Suzi dressed
and even doing the washing; Lex opens the
door, puts the washing inside and even presses
the button to start the machine for her!
Suzi says ‘He’s given me the confi dence to
go out and he’s a great ice-breaker and way to
meet people, he’s changed my life forever’.
TRAILERS

MGS Dog Trials Aldershot 2005
Getting up on the morning of Tuesday 6
September, I could not help but be pleased
with the weather, a slight haze but the sun
was already trying to get through; a harbinger
for a good trials. After breakfast, off to Region
4 HQ to meet Steve Plummer and Ian Hunter
Jaap. Steve is the Regional Manager and Ian
was the Chairman of the 2005 MGS Dog Trials
Committee.
After a quick discussion, Ian took me to walk
the Obstacle course. This was built by the local
dog section, led by CSO4 Steve Lewis, over 1.7
miles of the local training area and consisted
of 11 obstacles in all. After that, and a bit more
admin, I then got ready for the initial briefi ng
followed by the night man-work part of the
trials. This part was held in St Omer Barracks
and started at about 21:00hrs. It was a good
night for the test and some very commendable
scores were returned. In particular CSO4 Karen
Christian and her dog Boris from Hermitage
who won this section. The last competitor
fi nished around three in the morning, so a long
night for many, especially the judges!
Wednesday dawned every bit as nice as the
previous day and fi rst up was the obstacle
course. Each obstacle required a marshall
and it was really heartening to see the large
numbers of managers from all regions who had
come to lend a hand. Some Herculean efforts
were observed and some excellent times were
posted with CSO5 Jones and his dog Rex
from Colerne winning both the ‘Handicap’ and
‘Scratch’ 4th Division Trophies.
After lunch at Clayton Barracks, it was back
to St Omer for the day man-work. Again, a high
standard was achieved and it was the turn of
CSO5 Michelle Elliot with her dog Chesney
from Ashchurch to get the best score. The
overall winner of the ‘Man-work Shield’ was
however CSO4 Karen Christian with her dog
Boris from Hermitage.
Now onto the highlight of the MGS Dog
community’s social calendar - The Barbeque! It
was as ever, very well attended and a delicious
spread was cooked for us by ‘Sodexo’ along
10 The Service Dog
Carl Stephens - Operations Manager
with a well stocked bar, what more could our
intrepid competitors, offi cials etc wish for. The
DRO, Sandy MacCormick was observed doing
sterling work in supporting his dog handlers
in their attempt to drink the bar dry! Lots of
good reports the following morning, including
a few sore heads.
Hangovers or not, all who turned up at the
arena where the last day was to be held were
well impressed by the layout, and facilities that
Ian Hunter Jaap and his team had obviously
worked so hard to prepare for us. It was
indeed gratifying to see the MGS and MDP
recruiting effort side by side. Particular thanks
to Annita McKay, Kim Turner and Tess Purnell
from Wethersfi eld who set our ‘stall’ up and of
course to CSO4 Lynn Bansraj and CSO5 Dave
Clark who manned the stand for us during a
particularly warm day. Grateful thanks also
to DS John Jones, MDP, for cooperating with
us in the use of the MDP Crime Prevention
Vehicle. Truly a great example of our Agency
working well together.
On then to the last two parts of the trial; the
Obedience and Agility tests. Each handler came
into the ring and went round the Obedience
course fi rst; demonstrating their control of
the dog and the dog’s reaction to words of
command by the handler. After this it was
straight on to the Agility part where the dog’s
agility was tested over nine varied obstacles,
each worth ten points with a further ten points
available for ‘overall impression.
During this part there was a break for lunch
of one hour, during which we were indeed
pleased to welcome our MDP colleagues,
under Inspector Phil Lucy, who gave us a
very profi cient display of their own unique dog
handling skills.
The last competitor fi nished at about half
past three and then it was a dash for CSO3
Angie Irvine and her team to consolidate all
the scores. This was duly achieved by four
o’clock and it was with a great deal of pleasure
that I was able to invite the Chief Executive of
the Ministry of Defence Police and Guarding
continued overleaf…

In addition to the winners mentioned, the following prizes were awarded:
Agency, Chief Constable Steve Love, to present
the prizes. This he did most admirably, taking
time to have a few words and posing for a
photograph with each and every recipient of
a prize. He followed this by a short speech in
which he said he had been most impressed
with what he had seen, urged us all on to
greater things and looked forward to seeing
all the competitors again.
The DRO, Sandy MacCormick then spoke a
few words in which he seconded the remarks
made by the CE and thanked all those who had
participated, in whatever capacity, to making
this an extremely successful MGS Dog Trials.
He fi nished by announcing that the 2006 Trials
would be held in Region 2, exact venue to be
notifi ed.
In summary then, the 2005 Trials were very
12 The Service Dog
successful indeed and I have personally nothing
but good and positive comments about them.
Best of all, the Appeals Judge was not called
upon to adjudicate! Much thanks must go to
Ian Hunter Jaap and his committee for their
sterling hard work; CSO4 Steve Lewis and
the Aldershot Dog Section for all their efforts;
Chief Superintendent Wendy Benson, MDP
for allowing some of our MDP colleagues
to participate in various parts of the event;
Commander Aldershot Garrison for allowing us
the use of Garrison real estate and of course to
all the competitors without whose preparation
and commitment these Trials could not possibly
take place. Grateful thanks to you all and we
will look forward to meeting, somewhere in
Region 2, in 2006.

14 The Service Dog
The Prison Service’s
The idea for a competition to recognise the work
done by Prison drug dog handlers was muttered
some time ago, without actually coming to fruition
until this year. The format is; Each area (e.g. North
West, East Midlands, etc.) will hold a trial to fi nd
the best active and passive dog to go forward to
the Regional trial (North and South). The High
Security Estate has been classed as an area for
this stage. This would give six active and passive
(North) and six active and passive (South).
SOUTH - Kent Area,Surrey & Sussex, London,
Thames Valley & I.o.W, South West & Wales
and Eastern. NORTH - North East, North West,
Yorkshire & Humberside, East Midlands, West
Midlands, High Security Estate.
Staff from the NDTSG Inspectorate have
judged each of the regional trials. The top three
in each specialism from each region went through
to the National fi nal in September, along with
representatives from the Northern Ireland and
Scotland Prison Services.
The trials format is;
Section 1 Control 60 marks
Section 2 Operational Search 300 marks
Section 3 Scent Recognition 60 marks
Operational Search
Passive
Consisted of ten lines, the lines varied from two
to ten people and included both moving and static
lines. This was to refl ect working conditions and
requirements of the annual assessment. The
handlers were required to complete the exercise
as two groups of fi ve lines with a rest period
between.
Active
Internal and external areas were searched to give
an overall search time of 30 - 40 minutes per dog,
broken into separate search periods with a rest
period between. For scoring purposes the search
was broken down into ten areas by the judge.
The scoring was broken down as follows;
Maximum 300 points
Correct declarations 20 (x 10 lines / areas) 200
Method / handling ability 6 (x 10) 60
Conforms to indication (i.e. if handler says dog sits
on positive lines did it do so). Points divided between
positive lines / areas 40.
Control
This appeared to be an area of contention for
many handlers who did not enter; it is not Crufts
level ‘obedience’ but an exercise to display
general basic control of the dog. It was carried

& Drug Dog Trials
First Drug Dog Trials
out at this level to encourage and not embarrass
the teams, as it turned out the standards varied
from excellent to average with nobody making a
fool of themselves.
Heelwork on lead 10
Heelwork off lead 20
The heelwork was an L shape at normal pace
with a sit and a down included. At regional level
each handler carried out heelwork on the lead
and were then given the choice of carrying out
the same routine off the lead.
Recall 10
Leaving the dog in the sit, move away between
5 and 20 paces and recall the dog to the front
before fi nishing at the heel position. By allowing
the handler to choose the distance they had an
opportunity to score some points, those who
achieved 20 paces were marked out of 10 while
those who opted for less distance were marked
with a lower maximum accordingly.
Down 20
Leave the dog in the down and move away 15
paces, this was not marked as an all or nothing
exercise as would be the case with patrol dog trials
but on a sliding scale from 2 to 5 minutes.
Scent Recognition
This exercise has been introduced to give a
spectator element to the trials, particularly for
the active dogs. It was viewed that many of the
dogs would have started their initial training by
getting a grounding in scent recognition using
either clothing or other hides.
Passive
Several rows of chairs were placed with an item
of clothing hung from each chair. Within some of
the clothing were placed either drugs or distraction
items (food, etc.). Each dog moved along the
rows and the handler was required to nominate
the clothing holding the drug/s dependent upon
the indication of the dog.
Active
Five racks containing ten plastic pots were
placed in a room, some of the pots containing drug
items and some with distraction items. The handler
was required to nominate the pot containing drug/s
dependent upon the indication of the dog.
Scoring
Correct indication of drug/s 30
Conforms to declared indication 10
Handling / method 20
The qualifi ers for the Nationals were:
Passive
Prison Service Patrol Dog &
The National Final
This years Prison Service Patrol Dog and
Drug Dog Trials proved to be a resounding
success. The standard of all the competitors
was very high. Newbold Revel the Prison
Service College hosted the four day event
from 7-10 September.
The weather on Saturday tested virtually
all the competitors as it poured it down most
of the day. Luckily there were large tents with
open fronts for the observers. Once the last
competitor fi nished his Manwork everyone
made their way to the lecture theatre where
Governor Steve Allen (Head of Prison Service
Dogs) started the proceedings before handing
over to Phil Wheatley. Thanks were given to all
those who helped with the organization and
smooth running of the competition. Thanks also
to the Judges and those who performed the
criminal work. A particular thanks to families,
friends and supporters that stayed and watched
the competition. (Must be keen or mad)
Mr Phil Wheatley (Director General of the
Prison Service) addressed the competitors,
friends and all present. He was pleased that
16 The Service Dog
this year the,
35th National
Prison Dog
Trials had
included the
exercises that will
cover the work done
by both the Passive and Active Drug Dogs as
well as the Patrol Dogs. He also said that in
these days of modern technology there is still
a major role for our dog teams to perform and I
have no doubt that they will meet the need, the
support from line management, colleagues and
of course the families and friends as this event
goes a long way towards helping them achieve
and maintain these very high standards.
The presentation of trophies is not only for
those who have competed in the trials. They
also include other awards of merit and this year
also included two Imperial Service Medals.
A great day was had by all and it was nice to
see some old faces and colleagues from the
past and present
All About Dogs Salutes The Service Dog
All About Dogs will be dedicating a section of
the show to the achievements and the role of
the service dog.
The show now in it’s seventh year, is being
held over the weekend of 13 and 14 May 2006,
at Brentwood in Essex.
The organisers are very much aware of the
important role that the Service dog teams have
played in the past and present day society. The
Police, Military, Customs, Prison, Fire Service,
BTP, MoD and Search and Rescue are all
invited to attend the show. This will be the
perfect opportunity for the public and the media
to meet the dogs and their handlers and learn
more about the role of the working dog.
Space is being made available to any of
the Service Dog sections to attend with their
exhibition units for recruitment and promotion
purposes.
Drontal, Britain’s leading manufacturers of
worming tablets will be sponsoring this section
of All About Dogs. All enquiries 01277 226624
also be honoured.
Special awards are being created, which will
be presented for outstanding achievement,
bravery and devotion to duty.
dogs and rub shoulders with show champions,
the countries top working police and service
dogs, experts from the canine world and take
part in many serious and fun competitions.
Peter Purves, commentator for BBC TV’s
Crufts coverage is also the commentator at
All About Dogs. Peter said ‘I am absolutely
delighted to be associated with the All About
Dogs Show, it is a brilliant event, that promotes
responsible dog ownership at its very best’.
All About Dogs is the perfect place for the
public, enthusiasts or professionals to look,

learn or take part and it doesn’t matter if you
are a total novice or an expert or just want to
improve you knowledge of dogs.
Events within the main arena cater for all
tastes. Displays and demonstrations delight
the audience and include Police and Service
Dogs, Agility, Obedience, Heelwork to Music
(‘doggie dancing’), Showing, Carting, Racing
Huskies, Search and Rescue dogs, Sheepdog
displays and Gun Dogs and a not-to-serious
Frisbee catching competition.
The Lord Petre, Lord Lieutenant of Essex,
who has kindly attended the event for the
past fi ve years, will once again be making the
presentations in the main arena.
The hugely popular Down-a-thon which last
year broke the World record for having the
largest amount of dogs laying down together in
one place for over fi ve minutes, is being held in
conjunction with The British Police and Service
Canine Association. The 2005 Down-a-thon
was a massive success and fi lled the main
arena to capacity with 427 dogs together with
their handlers and stewards and offi cials having
a tense time while all the dogs were placed in
a down stay. Each dog was sponsored to enter
the down-a-thon and Canine Partners received
a much needed boost to their funds. When the
fi nal whistle was blown for the end of the downa-thon
the vast audience cheered and clapped
and the dogs responded with a giant chorus
of barking. If you would like a sponsorship and
entry form for the 2006 Down-a-thon please
visit the website www.allaboutdogs.org.uk
forms can be downloaded.
The Breed stands which are always extremely
popular with many people seeking out the Breed
Advisors to gain valuable information about
their own dogs or dogs they intend to get in
the future. This is always a busy section of the
show. Each breed adviser brings along several
different dogs of the same breed to meet the
public. A massive 115 different breeds were
represented at the show last year.
The Inter Counties Police Dog Trial, has been
running at Brentwood for the past twenty years
and is the largest Police Dog Trial, next to the
National Finals. Entries for the trial come from
as far apart as Scotland to Cornwall. The 2006
trial, which takes place on the Sunday looks set
to be a record entry. The trial is also open to
other sections of the service dog world including
parks, BTP and prison dog sections.
The competition comprises of Criminal Work:
Chase, Stand-off, Stick Attack, Gun Attack,
Emergency Stop and defence of Handler.
Control: Heelwork, Distance Control,
Retrieve, Speak and Down.
Agility: Clear Jump, Long Jump and
Scale.
Details of the trial can be obtained from
the All About Dogs offi ce if you are interested
please call 01277 226624.
The All About Dogs, Good Dog, Bronze,
Silver and Gold Diploma tests are set to be
yet another tremendous success. The Diploma
tests will give anyone a chance to test their
dogs in basic obedience and good behaviour
with a series of different exercises.
Whippet Racing - Huskies in Harness -
Bernese Dogs Carting - Newfoundland water
rescue dogs and Leonburgers, will all be ‘doing
their thing’ in their own separate rings around
the showground.
Although many champions both in breed
and working dogs attend the event, probably
one of the most important parts of the overall
show, will be the thousands upon thousands of
family pets with their owners that come along
to look, learn and take part.
New Hydrobath Dog Bathing System for
Scottish Police Dog Training School
Following a successful on site demonstration, A new, fast and efficient method for bathing dogs has just been installed at The Scottish
Police Dog Training School, Glasgow.
Now available in the UK, The Deluxe Fido’s Hydrobath. This powerful and quick dog bathing system will not only revolutionise your dog
bathing, it saves time, effort and provides a deep clean for working dogs. Now dog bathing can be quicker, easier and much more efficient!
A twin-tank system makes the Deluxe Fido’s Hydrobath so easy to use. Cold Water is fed into two 17-litre holding tanks at the bottom of
the bath. A heating element warms the water in ‘tank one’ from which water is dispensed into tank two and mixed with shampoo. By way
of a built in pump, the mixed water and shampoo solution is applied directly into the dog’s coat via a shower hose. As the shampoo is evenly
mixed, at the correct dilution, and under pressure it easily and efficiently penetrates even the thickest coats. For rinsing, the operator simply
switches from the soapy water tank to the clean water tank. The water from both tanks is filtered and recycled back into the tanks until the
operator decides to drain it or change it. This means greater efficiency and no unnecessary waste of water or shampoo!
By using Fidos Rinse concentrate the process can be even quicker, this no rinse solution is ideal for working dogs which may require
frequent bathing due to the nature of their job, tracking through undergrowth, wooded areas etc, and particularly during winter months when
the weather conditions creates even more dirt underfoot (and paw), Rinse conentrate can be applied without the need to rinse. It is extremely
mild and it herbal, soap free and hypoallergenic properties ensures safe use for frequent bathing.
The Deluxe Fido’s Hydrobath is designed for speed, efficiency, comfort, hygiene and durability. The baths are made from sturdy fibreglass,
which is strong lightweight, durable and easily cleaned. UK distributor Red Cape are dispatching units to grooming parlours, mobile groomers,
breeders, kennels, vets and . Demand is even outstripping supply during at most times!
Maintenance has been made easy for the Deluxe Fido’s Hydrobaths. The unit simply needs to be flushed through with Fido’s Hydro Flush
Disinfectant, to clean the pump, shower rose and drains. Hair and debris must be removed from the filters regularly.
The bigger the dog, and the thicker the coat, a huge amount of valuable time is saved by using the Deluxe Fido’s Hydrobath. Time trials
for complete bath:
Large Breeds (Newfoundlands) = under 20 mins,
Medium Breeds: German Shepherd, Rottweiller, Spaniels = under 10 mins,
Toy breeds = In Minutes !!
All Hydrobaths are covered by a 12-month manufacturers guarantee and a service back up and spare parts service is readily available. A
number of accessories are also available, including a Small Dog / Puppy Riser, Restraining Kit, Casters, and a Hydrobath Cover.
DoubleK Dryers and Blasters to compliment their Hydrobaths. Excellent Special Package Deals available to all Forces.
Vets Corner
Hip dysplasia
Hip dysplasia is an instability of the hip joint
resulting in the femoral head (ball) not fi tting
properly within the acetabulum (socket).
Because of this the joint wears abnormally
and goes on to develop arthritis causing pain
and hind leg weakness. The exact cause
remains unknown, but there is a genetic
link, although this is not fully understood,
other factors which may increase the risk of
HD include obesity and a very rapid growth
rate during puppyhood. The incidence in the
common service dog breeds is probably
over 20 per cent so many of you may have
direct experience of the condition.
26 The Service Dog
The disease is usually fi rst seen in young
dogs often around six months of age. Signs
include painful hips, reluctance to exercise,
diffi culty jumping/climbing stairs and muscle
wastage over the hindquarters. In many
cases the signs improve as the dog fi nishes
growing but recur dramatically in middle age
as secondary arthritis develops. Diagnosis
is based on the history and examination of
the dog but can only be confi rmed by x-rays
of the hip joint.
Treatment can be medical or surgical
depending on the age and severity of the
clinical signs. The two most common surgical
procedures are total hip replacement and
femoral head excision. Total hip replacement
involves removing the existing joint and
inserting an artifi cial replacement. Results
are generally good but it remains a very
expensive procedure generally only
performed in specialist centres. Femoral
head excision involves removing the femoral
head (ball) and allowing a fi brous false joint
to form. This false joint will be pain free
but range of movement and hip stability
are usually reduced. Medically treatment
usually involves a combination of oral
supplements such as glucosamine and
chondroitin (which enhance the production
of cartilage in the joint and reduce joint
inflammation) and anti-inflammatory
painkilling drugs such as rimadyl and
metacam. In severe cases steroids are
sometimes used but are generally avoided
due to their many side effects. Weight control
and hydrotherapy in affected animals can
also be very helpful.
Thankfully many breeding animals are
now screened for HD prior to mating and it
is hoped that as a result we should see the
scale of the problem gradually decrease. In
the meantime early detection and treatment
of problems can still dramatically improve
the patients’ quality of life.
better and better, competitors should be very
proud of what they have achieved. I know I am
proud of what they have done.
