BOOK BUZZ BINGO, WORLD BOOK DAY AND
ACCELERATED READERS
Book Buzz Bingo continued through to half term and
the following pupils completed a Bingo board and
were rewarded with a chocolate selection box. In
8D1: Morgan Haslam, Michaela Para, Nandika Rai and
Ethan Fisher. Also in year 7, Jack Cooper in 7G1 and
Caitlin Lawrie in 7P1. Amazingly, one pupil managed
to complete two bingo boards and received two
selection boxes; congratulations Jamie Tyler in 7D1!
World Book Day was a celebration of reading and
appreciating classic literature and children’s classics.
For two consecutive lessons, all Year 7 and 8 pupils
were encouraged to read abridged versions of classic
literature and mythological stories within their library
lessons. Many were in graphic novel format and the
shorter texts gave more immediate access to the
themes, plot and characters of these tales. Very
popular titles were ‘20,000 Leagues Under The Sea ‘,
‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’, ‘The Hunchback Of Notre
Dame’, ‘Frankenstein’, ‘Dracula’, ‘Black Beauty’, ‘The
Hound Of The Baskervilles’, ‘The Jungle Book’ and
‘Oliver Twist’. Many pupils also read and quizzed on
multiple Shakespeare titles such as ‘Macbeth’, ‘Romeo
and Juliet’ and ‘Much Ado About Nothing’. Pupils
were very pleased to find out that many of the titles
they had chosen would be study texts for their
English Literature GCSE. They expressed surprise at
the interesting plots and enjoyed reading them.
Chris Kemp in 7P1 said ‘ I chose a book called
’20,000 Leagues Under The Sea’ which is all about a
Professor and Captain Nemo who have an
adventure under the sea in a submarine. They go to
an island where native people are and chase them
with stones but they are electrocuted by the
submarine. They find an abandoned under-sea village
which is guarded by sea monsters. It really surprised
me that a classic book was so exciting and cool. I had
thought it might be boring but it wasn’t!’
During this half term there have been some amazing
reading accomplishments in Accelerated Reader
lessons. Georgia Beck in 7G1 is now a treble
millionaire with four personal points targets reached.
Daniel Grant in 7D1 is now a double millionaire with
three targets hit and Jamie Tyler in 7D1 has hit his
first million and achieved two points targets. Rachael
Wright in 7C1 is now working towards her fourth
points target and Jacob Paxton in 7P1 has hit two
targets. All millionaires can choose a £5 book of their
choice from Scholastic and each points target reached
is a name in a prize draw for an Amazon voucher at
the end of term. Pupils are all currently working hard
towards achieving as many certificates and accolades
as they can, as each of these are a point for their class
for this term’s competition. Good luck everyone!
