FOOTBALL<br />

The Year 7 Football Team have now commenced their first<br />

season at Etone College. Their first fixture would prove to be<br />

a tough test against a strong Higham Lane side. The team<br />

looked to have settled into their first competitive match with<br />

ease as they took the lead within the first two minutes of the<br />

fixture. Missed chances looked as if they were going to haunt<br />

Etone as Higham Lane scored two goals in quick succession to<br />

go 2-1 up. This resulted in an admirable spirited response from<br />

the team to show incredible resilience and equalise making it 2<br />

-2. Etone piled the pressure on an increasingly nervous Higham<br />

Lane defence but couldn’t find the net again to get the three<br />

points they feel they deserved. The result, a point - that was<br />

celebrated by Higham Lane knowing that they were fortunate<br />

to have not lost.<br />

George Eliot was the next fixture on the calendar and familiar<br />

territory for Etone as they hosted their first fixture of the<br />

season. An unfortunate mistake from the Etone defence<br />

resulted in a George Eliot goal. This would prove to be the<br />

only clear opportunity on goal the away side would have as the<br />

Etone defence denied the opposition any chances to score<br />

again. The strength of character from the Year 7 side was<br />

called upon again as they pushed for an equaliser; an equaliser<br />

that they would eventually score during the closing minutes of<br />

the first half. The match finished 1-1, again Etone knowing that<br />

they should have come away with all three points.<br />

Although the Year 7 team remained undefeated, they were not<br />

satisfied and demanded more from themselves. Desperate for<br />

their first win they travelled to The Nuneaton Academy.<br />

Having dominated from the offset but unable to convert<br />

chances there was apprehension and fear amongst the ranks<br />

that they were going to come up short of their own high<br />

standards yet again. However, the attacking force of Etone<br />

managed to find accuracy in their shooting and punished The<br />

Nuneaton Academy resulting in a 3-1 victory; a margin that<br />

could have easily been far greater.<br />

Although by their own admission the team have been unable to<br />

perform to the best of their ability, they remain undefeated<br />

with a win and two draws. The team possess a great deal of<br />

potential and we look forward to seeing the team develop as<br />

they progress throughout their time at Etone College.<br />
