FOOTBALL
The Year 7 Football Team have now commenced their first
season at Etone College. Their first fixture would prove to be
a tough test against a strong Higham Lane side. The team
looked to have settled into their first competitive match with
ease as they took the lead within the first two minutes of the
fixture. Missed chances looked as if they were going to haunt
Etone as Higham Lane scored two goals in quick succession to
go 2-1 up. This resulted in an admirable spirited response from
the team to show incredible resilience and equalise making it 2
-2. Etone piled the pressure on an increasingly nervous Higham
Lane defence but couldn’t find the net again to get the three
points they feel they deserved. The result, a point - that was
celebrated by Higham Lane knowing that they were fortunate
to have not lost.
George Eliot was the next fixture on the calendar and familiar
territory for Etone as they hosted their first fixture of the
season. An unfortunate mistake from the Etone defence
resulted in a George Eliot goal. This would prove to be the
only clear opportunity on goal the away side would have as the
Etone defence denied the opposition any chances to score
again. The strength of character from the Year 7 side was
called upon again as they pushed for an equaliser; an equaliser
that they would eventually score during the closing minutes of
the first half. The match finished 1-1, again Etone knowing that
they should have come away with all three points.
Although the Year 7 team remained undefeated, they were not
satisfied and demanded more from themselves. Desperate for
their first win they travelled to The Nuneaton Academy.
Having dominated from the offset but unable to convert
chances there was apprehension and fear amongst the ranks
that they were going to come up short of their own high
standards yet again. However, the attacking force of Etone
managed to find accuracy in their shooting and punished The
Nuneaton Academy resulting in a 3-1 victory; a margin that
could have easily been far greater.
Although by their own admission the team have been unable to
perform to the best of their ability, they remain undefeated
with a win and two draws. The team possess a great deal of
potential and we look forward to seeing the team develop as
they progress throughout their time at Etone College.
