FROM THE BOYS
Getting into College
The switch between prep school and high school is a
very important part of a boys schooling career. There
are many great choices of colleges in a country like
South Africa, wether it be a boarding school, or a day
school. Some boys already know where they want to
go, which makes everything easier, but I am one of
those boys who doesn’t.
The main aspects of a college that boys should consider
when they’re making their decisions are not academic,
cultural or sporting power, but instead how
happy they’ll be, if they attend that high school. There
are many opportunities to get a feel for what the
school is about, like interviews, experiences, and open
days. I have applied to 3 colleges, Hilton College, St.
John’s College, and St. David’s College, which are all
very different schools, and have a lot to offer. After
about half a year, I have finally finished the long journey
of interviews, entrance exams, scholarship exams
and experiences. Now the countdown has begun, until
I need my final decision, on where I will be going to
school.
Collective Noun Poem on Animals
A tower of giraffes try not to fall,
Onto a March soldiers pounding into a hall.
A slime of snails slide down a hill,
Watching a band of tigers drinking ‘til full.
A trail of monkeys play in their socks,
A swing of apes eats and mocks.
A fin of sharks swim around the world,
A whisker of cats, lay in the sun curled.
A chomp of hippos swim into a lake,
A pyramid of dinosaurs, in hot sun bake.
A spot of leopards do the leopard crawl,
A prickle of hedgehogs curl and ball.
So many animals can give us collective nouns,
Some of the weirder ones may cause frowns.
I have luckily got the April holidays to reflect on my
options, but in reality, it’s an unbelievably short period
of time, for a decision of this caliber. If I could give
advice to the Grade 7’s of 2018, it would be to leave
your options open, until the last second, and to go
with your gut feel. And at the end of the day, it is your
choice, not your parent’s, because you will be the one
attending. I still haven’t come up with a solution to this
problem, and with less than a month to go before the
phone call, I’ve reached a crucial stage of this process,
that will change my life.
