Outdoors and in, spring sets the mood
for making everything fresh and new. Here
are eight tips to get your creative juices
flowing.
1. Add a pop of color and personality to
your front door. Creating an inviting entryway
can be as easy as a fresh coat of paint
on the front door and cascading pots of
foliage and flowers.
2. Maximize the flow. Using similarly
shaded neutral colors on walls, especially
in open floor plans, helps to create a welcoming
environment and allows homeowners
maximum potential for adding
artwork and décor.
3. Change out the winter window treatments
for lighter, brighter ones. Let the
sun shine in, opt for light colors that won’t
fade. Cotton, linen and silk blends are perfect
choices since they tend to hang well.
4. Light it up. According to the experts at
This Old House, every room should have
three kinds of lighting: ambient, which
provides overall illumination and often
comes from ceiling fixtures; task, which
often is found over a kitchen island or a
reading nook; and accent, which is more
decorative, highlighting, say, artwork.

5. Throw out the old. If you haven’t
changed your wall décor or accent pieces
since Bush was in the White House, it’s
time to gather up the old and shop for
something new. In fact, even if the majority
of your decorations are newer, nothing
brightens up a space or your mood like a
little something new. If you can’t let go of
the old, consider calling in a professional
declutter or decorate to help you.
6. Add flowers. Outdoor beds aren’t the
only place flowers should be blooming in
spring and summer. Every room of the
home benefits from having live plants and
fresh flowers in them. For an easy-to-grow
plant, consider English ivy, which NASA
scientists have listed as their No. 1 in terms
of air-filtering qualities. Peace lilies also
can reduce the levels of a number of toxins
in the air. The heart-shaped philodendron
is not only easy-to-grow and long-living,
it’s also particularly good at absorbing
xylene.
7. Mix and match. Who said chairs
had to match tables or even other chairs?
Homes should reflect the personalty of
their owners – outdoors and in – and
that just might mean a bit of mixing and
matching of well-loved things.
8. Create an interest wall. Tiles, paint,
or dare we say it – wallpaper – can create
a wall that stands out on its own or sets
the backdrop for a large piece of art, furniture
or a stunning mirror.
