MARAES COLOR
Shades and Highlights
Coloring is a key service in a salon; before deciding which color to apply, carry out
a detailed diagnosis with your customer and get a thorough understanding of her
expectations, the base color you have to work on and the percentage of white hair.
Maraes uses a universal numbering system that makes interpreting and reading hair
color levels and tones extremely easy. The universal numbering system consists of:
• Base or hair color level: the number before the decimal point;
• Primary Tone: the first number after the decimal point;
• Secondary Tone: the second number after the decimal point.
The Tones in the color chart are:
.0: natural
.1: ash
.2: violet
.3: gold
.4: copper
.5: mahogany
.6: red
.8: brunette
The number 7.43 (Blonde, Copper-Gold) for example, is read as follows:
.7: hair color level - Medium Blonde
.4: primary Tone - Copper
.3: secondary Tone - Gold
The color chart also includes intensifiers B (blue) – V (violet) – G (yellow) – C (copper)
– R (red), that can be mixed with the shades to personalize and create a wide range
of fashion tones, or to neutralize unwanted tones.

Directions
Mix the Lightening Oil and the Activator with a mixing ratio of 1:1 in a non-metal bowl until you
have a smooth cream. Apply to dry or towel-dried hair according to the treatment you wish to
perform. Leave for 5 - 20 minutes, depending on the result desired and the texture of the hair.
DEVELOPMENT
TIMES
LIFT
5 minutes ½ level lighter
10 minutes 1 level
15 minutes 1½ levels
20 minutes 2 levels
The degree of lift and the speed with which the product acts can vary according to the
structure of the hair and whether there is already an artificial color on the lengths and ends.
Best results are achieved on natural hair.
The Lightening Oil can be used for the following services.
Hydrating, lightening pre-color treatment: to prepare hair to receive a fashion color or a
very light shade, such as coppers, reds or High Lifts, on a very dark base. Apply the mixture
to the hair, leave for 20 minutes, remove any excess product then apply the desired Maraes
shade.
Natural highlights: to lift natural hair up to two levels and create ultra-natural effects on lengths
and ends. Apply the mixture using the lightening technique of your choice and leave for up
to 20 minutes according to the degree of lift desired. Rinse then shampoo and condition hair
using the Maraes Color Nourishing haircare range.
Conceal regrowth: to quickly conceal the contrast between a natural dark base and lighter
lengths. To reduce the difference between a natural base and highlights or a difference in
color due to considerable regrowth. Apply the mixture to the area to be treated, leave for up
to 20 minutes, according to the shade desired. Rinse then shampoo and condition hair using
the Maraes Color Nourishing haircare range.
After coloring, continue with the deep restructuring Color Nourishing Doppio Elixir treatment.
7
What does PPD free mean?
It means free of p-Phenylenediamine. This substance is used as a color
pigment and can cause hypersensitivity in some people. This reaction
is limited with Maraes as this pigment is not contained in the products.
We recommend you always perform a sensitivity test before beginning
treatment.
Can I apply the color to wet hair?
It depends on the result you are after. To ensure the product is absorbed
properly, we recommend applying the color to dry hair, especially if you
are covering grey/ white hair. If you are toning hair we recommend towel
drying hair to remove any excess water and applying to slightly damp hair.
Which developer should I use for grey/white hair coverage?
Grey/white hair is generally covered using Developer 20 vol. In special
cases of course resistant hair, we recommend using 30 vol. to penetrate
the resistant cuticle layers, so it is easier for the product to reach the hair’s
cortex.
When should I use 10 vol.?
To tone highlighted and bleached hair or to recolor lengths and ends that
have faded more than half a level.
When should I use 40 vol.?
Developer 40 vol. is used with High Lifting colors with a 1:2 mixing ratio
that lifts hair up to 5 levels.
How many levels can I lift hair?
We can lift hair from 1 to 3 levels with all the natural and fashion shades
mixed 1:1 using Developer 20 or 30 vol and up to 5 levels with the High
Lift shades mixed 1:2 with Developer 40 vol.
Does Maraes cover grey/white hair 100%?
Yes, with Maraes you can achieve perfect grey/white hair coverage.
9
10
11
Do all the shades cover white hair 100%?
With 0 - 40% white hair, we can use the fashion shades on their own.
With 40 - 70% we recommend using ½ highlight and ½ natural. With
70 - 100% you will need ¾ natural and ¼ fashion shades.
Can I mix the High Lift colors with each other?
You can mix the High Lift colors with each other to customize highlights
but they cannot be mixed with other shades.
Can the shades be mixed with each other?
All the shades can be mixed with each other to customize tones, provided
you follow the basic rules of colorimetry.
How do you use intensifiers?
Intensifiers can be mixed with all the shades to make tones even more
vibrant (for example reds, coppers, violets and golden highlights) or mixed
with the shades to neutralize unwanted tones (such as blue, for instance).
They can be used to boost tones or contrasts up to a maximum of 15 g
can be applied at the root or they can be used on their own on lengths
and ends to enhance tone.
