Diebold Goldring Werkzeugfabrik GmbH has lost it’s founder and guiding light, Helmut Diebold,
to a heart attack. Herr Diebold was just shy of 84 years young. A native-son of the “Killer Valley”
region, he will be missed throughout the Valley.
Helmut Diebold created a company known worldwide. He guided it from humble beginnings
with overwhelming personal commitment. "Only those who swim through the storm will reach
the shore safely" was his personal maxim. Helmut Diebold's life work is continued and honored
by his son, Hermann Diebold. Until his sudden death, Herr Diebold was always deeply involved
in his company, and his experience and expertise were always in demand.
His career reads like a modern novel: Helmut Diebold was born on 29 November 1929 in
Starzeln, the fourth child of a working-class family. He married Ida, the beautiful daughter of the
Bumiller family, owners of the prestigious “Zur Post” in Jungingen.
Herr Diebold began a demanding career as an entrepreneur. On a borrowed bike, he rode to
Jungingen daily, after a stint of labor in his own workshop in Starzeln. There, he worked parttime
for several companies to support his fledgling enterprise. He delivered the finished
products of his workshop twice a week in a handcart! Soon, the young entrepreneur used some
of his hard earned money to buy a motorcycle. Then as now, quality counted, and his business
thrived. New machines were purchased and the first employees were hired.
In 1968, the workshop in Starzeln was bursting at the seams. Herr Diebold built a new factory in
Jungingen. Even as this was completed, it seemed additions were required. This pattern of
expansion has continued to this day. Helmut Diebold’s lessons of hard work and ideals of high
quality were ingrained in his son, Hermann. Today, under the son’s leadership, with the father’s
guidance, what was once a one-room workshop is a thoroughly modern facility that employs
over 120 people.
Regardless of success, Herr Diebold was \driven by new ideas and new opportunities. He
never stopped striving for new, improved technology, and he never stopped sharing his success
with his employees.
The award of the “Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany” to Herr Diebold would
rank among the most remarkable highlights in his life. In addition, he was a member of the
Municipal Council and the County Council, as the Deputy for Jungingen, for many years, He sat
on the board of the People's Bank of Hohenzollern, and was a District Court Judge in
Hechingen.
Helmut Diebold contributed selflessly to Jungingen’s infrastructure. Together with his wife, Ida,
he restored the distinctive half-timbered "Bole Haus” and "Zur Post", returning “Zur Post” to it’s
former renown as a classic hotel and restaurant. When he learned of the need, he financed the
construction of a building to house a new dental practice and The People's Bank in Jungingen.
Herr Diebold gave to his community as he did to his family and to his work-selflessly. As
chairman of the Skiing Association, he was built first engine-powered ski-lift. He was also an
honorary member and staunch supporter of music clubs in Jungingen, Starzeln, and Hausen.
Helmut Diebold is survived by two daughters and a son. He is the grandfather of seven and
great-grandfather of triplets. He was laid to rest with an outpouring of sympathy from family,
friends, companions, clients, political allies and rivals, sports clubs, and the citizens of the
Jungingen area. He will be missed.
