Trekking in Palinuro: the paths to discover Palinuro’s treasures
The Path Fortini and Torri:
Sheer crags, natural arches and caves are some
of the treasure of Capo Palinuro. On the north-facing
limestone cliffs it grows the Primula di Palinuro, a unique
endemic species that grows in the salty environment.
Used in the past to link the coastal towers and the forts,
the path winds through dense clumps of esparto grass and large
clusters of junipers and mastic trees.
The towers accompany the traveler on an exciting walk
through history. On the promontory of Capo Palinuro,
at Punta della Quaglia, you can admire
an exemple of Rural Architecture, an ingenious system
to collect superficial rainwater. A geological and
archaeological wonder is the famous Grotta Azzurra,
which owes its name to the play of light coming from
the opposite side of the cave.
Batteria del Prodese and Fortino di Monte d’Oro,
both built during Napoleonic times, also served as a hiding place for
the rebels of Cilento Revolt.
Torre della Quaglia and Torre Calafetente were built
to look out for Saracen raids during
the middle of the 16 th century. At Punta Spartivento stands the
Palinuro lighthouse, on the site of which
the tower of the same name would have originally stood
and of which scarce remains can be seen at the base
of the lighthouse. The sheer crags overlooking the sea
are the chosen habitat of the wellknow Primula Palinuro,
discovered in 1767, and which can be seen in all
its beauty between February and March.
