Inside the Villa you will find the Restaurant “Brigantessa”, really appreciated for the
quality of the cooking and the very relaxing and pleasant setting.
The plates you can taste at the “Brigantessa” represent the traditional cooking of Cilento,
of the coast side with a wide variety of fresh fish but also of the inland, with plates of meat
and fresh pasta.
In every dish you will find the same care that Mirella and her family have for every detail
“Amazing food, great service, great value”
3 June 2014
This restaurant is set in the lovely gardens if the Villamirella guesthouse and apartments. The setting and
decor is perfect for a great Italian meal which you certainly get here, I have visited three times during my
stay at Villamirella already! Service is excellent, food is excellent - real Italian home cooking, I cannot fault
it. The service is excellent too - the Staff are all very helpful and it is all great value for money. It far exceeded
my expectations. This place is a must visit if you are in the area.
Some suggested areas to be seen…..
Discovering our coast and our countryside will certainly be interesting and pleasure. Here there is a short
list of few places that you can and should visit during your holiday in Palinuro area.
Palinuro Cape: a spectacle of rock above and below the sea.
Palinuro Cape, extending into the sea with his
extraordinary form of "pentadattilo" (five points, like
a hand), is one of the most beautiful in the coast of
Campania, with its cliffs that fall into the sea from
more than 50 meters. Among the thousand cracks in
the rocks, above which towers the lighthouse of Cape
Palinuro, you will find nesting birds of many varieties
and plants and flowers typical of the Mediterranean
climate. Our suggestion is to go there and just seat in
the silence of the nature looking at the skyline and
listening to the sound of albatross flying as real kings
of the deepest coast.
Palinuro Light House/Cape
Amazing view of all the area from the Cape of Palinuro.
Its light house is one of the highest in Italy, the light power
can reach even the Sicily coast
.
Palinuro Caves: a treasure over and under the sea
But the real treasure of Cape Palinuro is below the sea
level: 32 caves, a paradise for divers. The most
important are: the “Blue Cave”, called this way for the
spectacular play of lights inside the water; the Silver
Cave; and the Sulfur caves, which contains a sulfur
source of water.
Palinuro Arbour
Some examples of underwater caves
BLEU CAVE:
Among the caves this one is the most famous, the
largest and the richest. Her morphology is really
articulated. In the north side of the main tunnel
opens a side branch ending after 18 meters of path at
an altitude of 15 metres. On the south east side of the
central hall and at the end of the main tunnel it opens
the great Hall of snow.
HALL of SNOW:
On the floor of this cave there is an area with 3
depressions in the shape of a tunnel with a share - 17
meters - 23 meters and flanks covered with small
pebbles and boulders. From one of these depressions
out sulfur spring. From this main source out a stream
of sulfurous water rises with a vertical diameter of
approximately 70/80 cm at an estimated speed of 15
meters per minute. And a substantial flow of water
that goes to accumulate, to a lesser density, under a
sort of dome at the top of the hall. The temperature of
water here is higher than normal seawater.
The Cathedral
A large submerged Cave with 4 domes air inside. Very
particular with smooth floor and different deep
cavities. You may notice some phenomena related to
the cave, such as dwarfism certain bodies compared
to other conditions and depigmentation of sponges.
Palinuro Beaches: a large varieties of beaches for each need.
The beaches in Palinuro are famous
for the fine sand, the clean sea and
the sunken rocks that reflect the
sun’s light, creating a kaleidoscopic
play of colours. The Fee (Foundation
for Environmental Education) has
awarded this year as in the last
fourteen years the town with the
"Europe Blue Flag". Main beaches:
Baia della Molpa, Buon Dormire,
Marinella, Saline, Ficocella, Porto.
(1)At Saline Beach you can admire spectacular
examples of fossil dunes that form a natural
environment with plant organisms that are in a
unique condition, extremely awake to human
aggression.
(2) Coasting the Capo Palinuro, where Ulysses tied himself in
order to try not to listen the singing mermaids, we can find
the “Buondormire” Beach. This particular name (the
meaning is literally “Good Sleep), has been given by local
fishermen.
(3) Marinella Beach over than 3 kilometres long
is famous for its fine white sand, clean sea and
the sunken rocks that reflect the sun’s light, creating
a wonderful play of colours.
(10) Arco Naturale: 1,5 km from Villamirella, a natural arc
that divides two beaches with an attractive view. A natural
marine sculpture that nowadays is lighted during the night.
The Beach of Porto is located right near the port of
Palinuro, well protected from the wind by the high
cliffs and surrounded by green. It is a beautiful sandy
beach. The sea is beautiful anywhere, its colours
shades go from turquoise to emerald, crystal clear,
with sandy bottoms and slopes. It’s perfect for long
swims. fFshing boats anchored near the shore make
this beach even more scenic and reminds us about the
local life.
Mingardo Beach is about 7 km long. It is located outside
the town, along the road between Palinuro and Marina di
Camerota. Most particular for its fine sand this place has a
deep seabed and therefor ideal for swimming. Part of this
beach is for naturism.
Trekking in Palinuro: the paths to discover Palinuro’s treasures
The Path Fortini and Torri:
Sheer crags, natural arches and caves are some
of the treasure of Capo Palinuro. On the north-facing
limestone cliffs it grows the Primula di Palinuro, a unique
endemic species that grows in the salty environment.
Used in the past to link the coastal towers and the forts,
the path winds through dense clumps of esparto grass and large
clusters of junipers and mastic trees.
The towers accompany the traveler on an exciting walk
through history. On the promontory of Capo Palinuro,
at Punta della Quaglia, you can admire
an exemple of Rural Architecture, an ingenious system
to collect superficial rainwater. A geological and
archaeological wonder is the famous Grotta Azzurra,
which owes its name to the play of light coming from
the opposite side of the cave.
Batteria del Prodese and Fortino di Monte d’Oro,
both built during Napoleonic times, also served as a hiding place for
the rebels of Cilento Revolt.
Torre della Quaglia and Torre Calafetente were built
to look out for Saracen raids during
the middle of the 16 th century. At Punta Spartivento stands the
Palinuro lighthouse, on the site of which
the tower of the same name would have originally stood
and of which scarce remains can be seen at the base
of the lighthouse. The sheer crags overlooking the sea
are the chosen habitat of the wellknow Primula Palinuro,
discovered in 1767, and which can be seen in all
its beauty between February and March.
Trekking in Palinuro: Molpa’s Path
Upon one of the most beautiful promontories of the
Cilento coast, in the heart of Palinuro, you can follow a
path that leads you to the discovery of Molpa.
The Molpa was an ancient city that once stood in
Campania about 1 km from Palinuro. The Molpa name
has Greek origins and according to some poets, it was the
name of a mermaid, the daughter of Archeloo and
Melpomene muse. As Molpe, Greek designed the river
Lambro and by extension the area around its mouth,
where once stood the village.
Molpa was founded around 540 BC by the Ionians from
the city of Phocaea who some years earlier had already
founded the city of Elea.
In 1554 coastal towers were built to offer protection to the
hinterland population and safety to sailors.
The tower of Molpa, or Marinella, is located at the mouth
of the Lambro river in a slightly elevated position above
the sea level. The location of the tower was intended to
prevent the Saracens pirates landfall, the supply of potable
water and the exploitation of the waterways offered by the
Lambro and Mingardo for raids in the hinterland of
Cilento.
The trail entrance is located at the base of the promontory
Molpa, just after the big green square seat, once the
Lanternone disco. The path is indicated by the provincial
signage. It is possible to park the car nearby and then
continue on foot.
Reaching the top of the promontory you will be able to
admire the nearby view of Palinuro’s coast with various
coves and bays, like Marinella beach.
The Cala Cave is an important prehistoric
site , like others in Marina di Camerota,
Inside it was found several stone tools such
as scrapers and back ends , faunal remains,
Paestum Temples
Paestum was founded about 600 years B.C. - some
years after Agropoli - by Greeks from Sybaris, which
was at that time an important Greek city in Calabria.
Paestum was established about 9 km southern from
the river Sele on a plateau made of travertine, which
also provided the building material for the town walls
and the temples. The outlines of this plateau
correspond to the town walls. The Sele formed a
natural border to the area situated in the north,
which was at that time controlled by the Etruscans.
The Greek settlers called the city Poseidonia in honor
of the Greek sea god, Poseidon. In spite of the name,
Poseidonia probably did not have an important
harbour. It was, at that time, separated from the sea
by a shallow fresh water lagoon and could be reached
only by small ships. Of course, the temples of
Paestum are a first-rate tourist attraction. Also
Germany's most famous poet, Goethe, visited them in
March 1787, just three decades after they were
rediscovered, and was strongly impressed by them.
San Lorenzo Charterhouse (Certosa di San Lorenzo)
The Padula Charterhouse was founded in 1306 by
Tommaso Sanseverino, Count of Marsico and owner
of Vallo di Diano. It was initially conceived as linked
to the people's religious organization, the "Certosini",
a monastic order founded by Saint Brunone whose
home is now in Grenoble, France.
This Padula Charterhouse is so unique and different
from any other because of its wide and numerous
rooms; just mentioning some numbers gives us an
idea of the actual space. The gardens, market yard
and monastery cover over 250.000 square meters.
There are 320 rooms, while halls and galleries expand
for 2500 meters; porches are built on 300 columns in
Padula Stone. There are 500 doors, 550 windows, 13
yards, 100 chimneys, 52 stars and 41 fountains.
All these numbers prove the San Lorenzo
Charterhouse, known as Padula Certosa is actually
biggest on in Europe.
Morigerati WWF Oasis
It is a WWF oasis since 1985 and a biological
protected area for the preservation of biodiversity and
valorization of an area composed of 670 acres where
you can admire the river Bussento’s rise. The river, in
the heart of “Parco Nazionale del Cilento e Vallo di
Diano”, is “swallowed” from the earth under the
village of Caselle in Pittari, and then rises again near
Morigerati. An ancient mule track, excavated in rock,
leads to the cave where the river rises again after its
mysterious underground journey. The river offers to
visitors the sight of canyons, waterfalls and crystal
blue water pools. With little bridges, wooden ladders
and little ways cut into the rock the journey offers a
view of the karstic phenomenon of the area.
under an old norman bridge. Some wooden
walkways allow you to get a few meters from the
waterfall where the microclimate that is created is
a sure relief on hot summer days. The streams are
so graceful and pure, that really seems to be the ”
Hair of Venus.” Actually, the name comes from
the plant species which on the waterfall flows ,
called ” venushair “. The beautiful waterfall is
located in Cappelo Area. Two paths hug the Rio
River, in the past the only way to reach Casaletto
Spartano. Near the river a old windmill maintains
his original state. That is the most important
piece of evidence of rural economic.
To better to enjoy your stay in Cilento’s nature, in
Venus Hair Waterfall Area there are some
barbecue area where you relax on lawn flowers.
Archaeological Park of Elea-Velia
The ancient city of Elea, which derives its name
from the local spring Hyele, was founded around
540 B.C. by a group of exiles from the Greek city
of Phocaea. The city, which was known in the 5th
century B.C. mainly for Parmenides and Zeno,
founders of the famous Eleatic philosophy school,
reached a period of great development in the
Hellenistic Age and in the Roman Age (late 4th
century B.C. - 5th century A.D.), when its name
was modified to Velia.
The tour begins from the lower city. When you go
up, you can cross between buildings dating back
to the Hellenistic and Roman times, you can
admire the grandeur of the road that leads first to
Porta Rosa, an interesting example of the arc use
in Greek architecture, and then the Acropolis,
where you can realize the layering of time, thanks
to the remains ranging from the VI century B.C.
to the Middle Ages. Of this period are preserved,
among others, the Angevin tower and two
religious buildings where now there are two
antiquaria. Starting from the Acropolis, you can
follow an evocative trail that runs along the crest
of the hill, stopping along the way at various
small sacred areas with buildings of the
Hellenistic Age and stretches of the boundary
wall. A visit to the Castelluccio, the culminating
point of Velia’s defensive system, concludes the
tour.
To better to enjoy your stay in Cilento’s nature
Madonna del Monte Sacro sacred place in Novi Velia
Madonna del Monte Sacro is a sacred place at
top of Mt. Gelbison. Visit it to better enjoy your
stay in the nature and history of Cilento, among
nature, history and religion.
Gelbison is an Arabic word meaning “Idol’s
Mountain”. Actaully, this mountain was sacred
before the Basilian Monks that founded the
sanctuary in the 10th century.
You may reach it by car and cross through all
villages that once were part of the "State of Novi".
When you will arrive, a car parking is available
and you may start the walk up. Then you will
reach a gate, where a stone plaque warns you
that the place is a sacred one. So begins the Via
Crucis steps, along whom you will enjoy the St.
Michael’s’ column within a lovely roses garden.
The next stop is the “Cross square”, where you
will enjoy the view from the high iron made
Cross, that you may climb if you dare. Few steps
more and you will lead the square, and worship
the cool wooden statue of the Madonna, the
fountain, the bell tower, the stone made church of
St. Bartholomew and the St. Nilo crypt.
Ad amazing and breathtaking view will fully asks
your attention and can try to flip a coin, for good
luck, on “Ciampa di cavallo” (the horse's leg
rock), an outcrop of rock where once the
Madonna saved a knight.
Don’t miss the “religious cults Gallery”, an
underground walk that connects the St.
Bartholomew’s Church at Madonna’s Church.
The entrance is through an arch, just discovered
while working on the San Nilo crypt. Here you
can see the living rooms of the Celestine order
and the Basilian monks caves..
At few miles from Palinuro, from the grey and pink
rocks overhanging the valley of the Mingardo
River, rises on ancient Medieval Village,
surrounded of a magical atmosphere: it’s San
Severino di Centola. This village was left 35 years
ago, when the in habitants removed to the plain
after the building of the new railway. But in the
Middle Age the village had a fundamental strategic
significance, as testified by the powerful castle. You
