Madonna del Monte Sacro sacred place in Novi Velia
Madonna del Monte Sacro is a sacred place at
top of Mt. Gelbison. Visit it to better enjoy your
stay in the nature and history of Cilento, among
nature, history and religion.
Gelbison is an Arabic word meaning “Idol’s
Mountain”. Actaully, this mountain was sacred
before the Basilian Monks that founded the
sanctuary in the 10th century.
You may reach it by car and cross through all
villages that once were part of the "State of Novi".
When you will arrive, a car parking is available
and you may start the walk up. Then you will
reach a gate, where a stone plaque warns you
that the place is a sacred one. So begins the Via
Crucis steps, along whom you will enjoy the St.
Michael’s’ column within a lovely roses garden.
The next stop is the “Cross square”, where you
will enjoy the view from the high iron made
Cross, that you may climb if you dare. Few steps
more and you will lead the square, and worship
the cool wooden statue of the Madonna, the
fountain, the bell tower, the stone made church of
St. Bartholomew and the St. Nilo crypt.
Ad amazing and breathtaking view will fully asks
your attention and can try to flip a coin, for good
luck, on “Ciampa di cavallo” (the horse's leg
rock), an outcrop of rock where once the
Madonna saved a knight.
Don’t miss the “religious cults Gallery”, an
underground walk that connects the St.
Bartholomew’s Church at Madonna’s Church.
The entrance is through an arch, just discovered
while working on the San Nilo crypt. Here you
can see the living rooms of the Celestine order
and the Basilian monks caves..
