Venus Hair Waterfall- Casaletto Spartano One of Ten places to visit during your stay in Cilento’s National Park it is the Venus’s Hair Waterfall in Casaletto Spartan. This small village hides a spectacular natural oasis where the water of the Sorgitore river reaches the Rio River, just under an old norman bridge. Some wooden walkways allow you to get a few meters from the waterfall where the microclimate that is created is a sure relief on hot summer days. The streams are so graceful and pure, that really seems to be the ” Hair of Venus.” Actually, the name comes from the plant species which on the waterfall flows , called ” venushair “. The beautiful waterfall is located in Cappelo Area. Two paths hug the Rio River, in the past the only way to reach Casaletto Spartano. Near the river a old windmill maintains his original state. That is the most important piece of evidence of rural economic. Archaeological Park of Elea-Velia The ancient city of Elea, which derives its name from the local spring Hyele, was founded around 540 B.C. by a group of exiles from the Greek city of Phocaea. The city, which was known in the 5th century B.C. mainly for Parmenides and Zeno, founders of the famous Eleatic philosophy school, reached a period of great development in the Hellenistic Age and in the Roman Age (late 4th century B.C. - 5th century A.D.), when its name was modified to Velia. The tour begins from the lower city. When you go up, you can cross between buildings dating back to the Hellenistic and Roman times, you can admire the grandeur of the road that leads first to Porta Rosa, an interesting example of the arc use in Greek architecture, and then the Acropolis, where you can realize the layering of time, thanks to the remains ranging from the VI century B.C. to the Middle Ages. Of this period are preserved, among others, the Angevin tower and two religious buildings where now there are two antiquaria. Starting from the Acropolis, you can follow an evocative trail that runs along the crest of the hill, stopping along the way at various small sacred areas with buildings of the Hellenistic Age and stretches of the boundary wall. A visit to the Castelluccio, the culminating point of Velia’s defensive system, concludes the tour.
