Mystery as RAB
source found dead
• Md Tauhid-Uz-Zaman,
Jessore
A 30-year-old man, said to
an informant of Rapid Action
Battalion, has been found shot
dead in Jessore’s Manirampur
upazila.
The deceased is Ataur Rahman,
a contractor, who was
the son of one Abul Kashem
hailing from the upazila’s Bagdanga
village.
Ataur was also an accused
in a murder case filed over
the death of Morwar Hossain
in 2015, police said, adding,
they detained a man named
Shahidul Islam over the latest
incident of death.
Manirampur police station’s
Officer-in-Charge
Mokarram Hossain said that
Shahidul informed them
about the murder around
11pm on Monday.
“We recovered the body
from near a rice mill an hour
later and then detained Shahidul
for interrogation,” the
OC said.
Referring to the detainee,
he added that Ataur and Shahidul
went to visit local Union
Parishad Chairman Chandra
Shekhar Roy at his home in the
evening.
Some unidentified miscreants
on two motorbikes
attacked the duo when they
were returning home around
10:30pm, opening fire on
Ataur’s face and throat, the
police officer continued quoting
Shahidul.
Ataur Rahman
The body bearing multiple
bullet wounds was sent to the
morgue of Jessore General
Hospital yesterday morning
for an autopsy.
OC Mokarram, however,
suspects that previous rivalry
over the murder case might
have led to Ataur’s death.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s
wife Shahnaj Parvin Rumi
said the chairman had phoned
Ataur and asked to meet him.
Accordingly, Ataur along
with Shahidul went to the
chairman’s home in Kultia
area, she added.
When contacted, UP chairman
denied calling Ataur over
phone.
“Rather, he [Ataur] wanted
to meet me to discuss some
issues relating to the locality,”
he said.
Ataur had left his village
home and started living in a
rented house in Jessore town
after being sued in the case. He
finally returned home along
with his family recently. •
