SUMMARY
Late in 1993, a diamond drilling program was completed on the Geordie Lake property
in Lanark County, Ontario by Freewest Resources Inc. The property is located west of
Ottawa in the Eastern Ontario Mining Division.
The property lies on the eastern margin of the Robertson Lake Mylonite Zone and is
underlain by gabbros, marbles and metavolcanics that have been variously sheared,
brecciated and mylonitized adjacent to the regional deformation zone.
In 1991, Chris Gleeson and Vern Rampton discovered two new surface showings by
prospecting on geochemical anomalies. The most important of the two consists of
several boulders of massive pyrite that have returned assays up to 19.8 g/t Au. The
second showing consists of copper mineralization hosted in ferroan dolomitic marble
which has returned assays up to 0.6 g/t Au. An induced polarization-resistivity survey,
done by Trev Corporation, determined several weak to moderate chargeability anomalies
in the vicinity of the surface showings. Four diamond drill holes were planned in order
to test the geophysical anomalies as potential structures related to the mineralization
observed on surface.
A total of 439 m BQ diameter diamond drilling was completed in four holes. The average
depth of the four holes was 100 m. No appreciable mineralization was encountered and
no significant gold values were determined from samples of drill core.
The results of the program do not suggest additional diamond drilling at this time. Further
surface work may be warranted however. More extensive trenching and stripping is
recommended in the area of the pyrite boulders. A VLF survey is also proposed.
1 Introduction
Freewest Resources Inc. recently completed a diamond drilling program on the
Geordie Lake property near Calabogie in Eastern Ontario. The drill program included four
drill holes to test several surface gold showings. The drill program is described in this
report in terms of the target selection and drill results.
GL-DDH-93
2 Location and Access
The Geordie Lake property is located in the Madawaska Highlands area west of
Ottawa, Ontario (Figure 1). The property straddles the boundary between Lavant and
Darling Townships in the northwestern corner of Lanark County. The approximate centre
of the property is described by 450 10' N Latitude and 76 038' W Longitude and appears
on N.T.S. Sheet 31 F/2. This area lies within the Southeastern Mining Division
headquartered at Tweed, Ontario.
Excellent access to the property is gained by travelling about 6 kilometres
southwest on the gravel Clyde Forks Road which leaves Highway 511 some 18
kilometres south of Calabogie. The property can also be reached by turning west from
Brightside, travelling west to Joe's Lake and then north on the Clyde Forks Road.
Several old logging trails lead east from the road to the drill sites.
The area is characterized by low hills covered by mixed forest. There are several
small ponds on the property but streams appear to be seasonal and water for drilling is
scarce.
4 Regional Geology
The Geordie Lake property lies on the east margin of the Robertson Lake Mylonite
Zone (RLMZ) in the Clyde Forks map area (Figure 3). The zone was initially identified
by Smith (1958) and further work by others (Carter, 1980; Jackson, 1980; Pauk, 1984 and
Wolff, 1982) has extended the zone to the south and north. The following section of this
report draws primarily from Easton (1990); a compilation which provides a good
discussion of the regional geology within the Clyde Forks area.
The RLMZ separates Precambrian rocks in the Clyde Forks area and the Sharbot
Lake area, to the south, into an eastern and western domain. The eastern domain
includes mafic flows and pyroclastic rocks, and dolomitic to calcitic marbles which are all
intruded by gabbros, diorites and tonalites of the Lavant Gabbro Complex. Folding is tight
in the Eastern domain and the general metamorphic grade is lower amphibolite although
middle to upper greenschist rocks are present locally. Palaeozoic faults cut the domain
into several structural blocks.
The Western domain is characterized by a suite of mafic, intermediate and felsic
volcanic rocks, metasedimentary derived mainly from volcanic sources, and dolomitic to
calcitic marbles. Structural deformation is much greater on the west side of the RLMZ
and the rocks in the Western Domain are tightly to isoclinally folded. Metamorphic grade
GL-DDH-93 fi
is middle to upper amphibolite facies.
The Robertson Lake Mylonite Zone is a major tectonic feature that extends 90 km
from Precambrian-Palaeozoic boundary, south of the property area, 90 km north to White
Lake, north of the property area. The zone is approximately 2 km wide and dips south
to southeast from 500 to 40 0 on the western margin and from 150 to 20 0 on eastern
margin. The structure is interpreted as a low-angle thrust fault along which rocks of the
Eastern Domain have been thrust westward over the rocks of the Western Domain. The
mylonitic rocks within the RLMZ vary from south to north in relation to the adjacent
country rocks. In the south, the zone is split by the Addington Lake Pluton into a wider
eastern zone of mylonitic mafic metavolcanic, gabbros and marbles and a narrower
western zone of mylonitic felsic metavolcanics. Moving north of the pluton the zones
persist with an eastern zone of mylonitic metagabbros and dolomitic marbles and a
western zone of mylonitic amphibolite and metadiorites. Still further north, the nature of
the western zone is modified by the addition of mylonitic dolomitic marbles.
The most favourable part of the RLMZ for gold exploration lies along the eastern
margin. A number of gold showings have been located to date (Carter et al., 1980).
Mineralization typically consists of gold associated with disseminated to massive pyrite
with lesser amounts of tetrahedrite hosted in ferroan dolomitic marble. The tetrahedrite
commonly produces azurite and malachite staining.
REGIONAL GEOLOGY
5 Previous Work
Previous exploration on the Geordie Lake property includes geological mapping,
total field magnetic, induced polarization-resistivity, and soil geochemical surveys and
back-hoe trenching (Plate 1). Work was initiated on the property by Lac Minerals Ltd. as
part of a larger exploration effort focused on the RLMZ and motivated by the results of
a regional till geochemical survey (Gleeson et al., 1984 and 1986). After completing a
drill program north of the present property area Lac discontinued the project. Homestake
Mineral Development Ltd. picked up the option in 1989 and completed a limited amount
of work in the Geordie Lake area including a program of humus sampling, and three
trenches before dropping the property. In 1991, Chris Gleeson and Vern Rampton
continued work in the area by prospecting the Homestake humus anomalies areas. Two
new gold showing were identified and trenched with a backhoe. The most important of
the two consists of several boulders of massive pyrite that have returned assays up to
19.8 g/t Au. The second showing consists of copper mineralization hosted in ferroan
dolomitic marble which has returned assays up to 0.6 g/t Au. Based on these results, the
claims were dealt to Trev Corporation. Trev cut a small grid cut and completed magnetic
and induced polarization-resistivity surveys. Several weak to moderate chargeability
anomalies were determined in the vicinity of the surface showings.
6 Drill Program
The drill holes described in this report were all chosen based on the results of the
latest trenching and geophysical surveys. A total of 429.0 m of BQ diameter drilling was
completed in four holes (Plate 1). Three of the holes were drilled on Mineral Claim EO
767258. The last hole was drilled on the Bruce patented lot option. The drilling was
completed by Forage St. Lambert Ltee. of Valleyfield, Quebec under the supervision of
Freewest's project geologist, Mark Fekete. The drilling was done between November 27
and December 5,1993. The drill core was logged (Appendix 1) and certain sections were
sampled for assay by splitting the core with a conventional hammer-type splitter. The
core samples were sent to Swaztika Laboratories Ltd. in Swaztika, Ontario and analyzed
for gold by fire assay-atomic absorbtion method using a one assay ton (30 g) portion
(Appendix 2). One in ten samples was check assayed. The drill logs and assay results
were plotted on cross sections at a scale of 1:250 (Plates 2, 3, 4 and 5). The drilling
intersected three basice rock types: gabbro, marble and intermediate clastic volcanic.
The gabbro is part of the Lavant Gabbro Complex. It occurs in the core as very
thin to thick injections into and "fragments" within the marble. The gabbro varies from
massive and relatively undeformed to strongly sheared, brecciated and mylonitized.
Chlorite alteration is pervasive throughout the gabbro while with sericite and hematite
alterations are developed locally in sections of stronger deformation within the gabbro.
GL-DDH-93 10
Leucoxene and pyrite, after illmenite and magnetite, are common accessory alteration
minerals.
The marble varies from calcitic to dolomitic. The calcitic marble is less common
and is usually grey in colour with a massive texture and shows a sedimentary aspect.
Bands and fragments of talc to serpentine alteration occur locally within narrow sheared
and brecciated sections of calcitic marble. The dolomitic marble is much more common
and shows a greater variation in colour, texture and alteration. It may be white, grey,
coral pink or tan coloured. The tan colour is characteristic of ferroan dolomite. The
texture ranges from massive to banded and weakly foliated. The dolomite is often altered
locally by calcite and talc-serpentine, particularly in zones of shearing or brecciation.
Mineralization within the dolomitic marbles includes pyrite as fine disseminations and
pyrite and chalcopyrite is occasional coarse clumps and blebs. Hematite in thin bands
is also commonly found within the dolomitic marbles.
The third principal rock type encountered in the drilling is called "intermediate
clastic volcanic". This designation is used as a field name only. The rock is described
as fine-grained, grey to green in colour, well-foliated, relatively hard and siliceous. It
appears to be a clastic rock and within the regional context it is reasonable to assume
that the unit is either a tuff or a sediment derived from volcamic material. Within this unit
there are zones of fine-grained, disseminated pyrite mineralization typically 0.5 to 1.0 m
GL-DDH-93
wide and also zones of pink quartz with hematite.
The drilling did not encounter any intervals of important mineralization and the core
samples returned generally very low gold values. The single significant assay, 439 ppb
Au, was determined from a zone of sheared dolomitic marble in the fourth hole from 58.6
to 59.3 m. The zone is 0.7 m wide and shows sericite-talc alteration, narrow quartz veins
with ankerite and 50Xo fine disseminated pyrite.
7 Conclusions and Recommendations
The drill program determined no significant gold values and the source of the gold-
bearing pyrite float remains unresolved. No further drilling can be recommeded at this
point. It is suggested that the area of Trench 6 be more extensively exposed with a large
hoe-type excavator in order to ascertain if a near-surface source for the pyrite boulders
exists locally. A VLF survey is also recommended.
