The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFS), what’s it all about?
The statutory EYFS profile in early
years settings provides Year 1 teachers
with an overview of each child’s
progression and development.
The EYFS profile records specific
observations and interactions of
your child in early years settings. In
particular, it shows where your child’s
levels of knowledge, understanding
and ability are against the expected
progress for their age. Practitioners
are trained to look for evidence of
learning and development which are
set out in the Early Years Foundation
Stage framework. The areas include
communication and language,
physical development, personal, social
and emotional development, literacy,
mathematics, understanding the world
and expressive arts and design.
Assessment is observational and
interactive rather than formal testing.
By the end of reception a profile will
be created for the start of their Year 1
education. It keeps parents up-to-date
and can be useful to identify other
professionals who may help your child
to develop certain skills. If your child
is exceeding the levels it helps to
identify where s/he can be challenged.
Practitioners are interested in
developing the child’s skills through
play and exploration, active learning
and thinking critically. The learning
profile is as much about developing the
personality, relationships and resilience
as it is about learning to count.
Ultimately the government want
our children to become confident and
independent through being in the right
environment surrounded by positive
relationships. When you look for a
childcare setting take into account the
learning environment and how staff will
help your child to develop.
