Well-Being
What are your plans
for tomorrow?
So you probably know where you're going on
your holiday this year, maybe you've even
booked for next year as well or you're saving
up for your next big adventure. You may have
already thought about retirement, that iconic
move to the country or maybe you've always
dreamed of moving abroad. Planning is a big
part of life, whatever your age. Hopefully you
have already made a will, it’s not morbid to
think and plan ahead like this, for it will
happen to us all eventually.
independence
We are living longer and stronger than ever
before. Getting older doesn't mean we have
to lose the independence that is so ingrained
in us. With a bit of planning, sudden changes
in our health need not mean enormous
changes to where or how we live.
Some relish the opportunity to move
to a care home or sheltered
accommodation, but you might want
to keep your independence and have
additional help in your own home
instead. It helps your loved ones
enormously if they know what you
would prefer, so don't let it get to a
crisis point where decisions are
rushed; plan ahead...
don't shy away from the
conversation
It's staggering to think that a third of
adults are concerned about the
physical health of their parents but
yet 81% are reluctant to start a
conversation about care (Home
Instead survey of 1,500 adults). When
did talking about care become such a
taboo subject, we are all going to
need some sort of care so make plans
now!

Hello Readers
The sun and the longer and warmer days is certainly lifting my
mood and motivation. However, the return of the local events is
definitely what we all need to get back on track.
What’s Back?
The Duck Race at Castlethorpe is back, so is TogFest at Bradwell
Abbey and the Riverside Festival in Stony. Stony and Wolverton Park
Bowling Clubs have relaunched their open days to welcome new
members. And yes, Stony Open Gardens are opening their gates
for their glorious floral displays. Milton Keynes museum are also
returning with their festivals and half term fun.
Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
In celebration of the Queen’s 70 years of service, we’ll all be enjoying
a 4 day UK bank holiday weekend running from 2-5 June. The Parks
Trust light Campbell Park Beacon at 9.45pm 2 June. Parties around
the area, including MK Museum, are on the agenda on the 4 June
with the Big Lunch in Stony on Sun, 5 June.
Health and Wellbeing
The last couple of years have been tough on our pockets and
mental health. We’ve found local groups and services to help
with managing your child’s mental wellbeing and help with food
insecurity. As costs rise, we’ve also searched out the best local free
events and places to go. You’ll find lots on pages 22-23 but head to
essentiallylocal.co.uk/children for more.
Local Businesses
In March we launched ‘Essentially Social’ with Brewery Tap House
in Stonebridge to offer support and inspire small business owners
and staff. The event is designed to help and encourage by sharing
stories as well as the inevitable setbacks. We won’t tell you how to
do something but along with other small business owners we listen
and support. There were great reviews of Sentia, a non-alcoholic
spirit business, as well as The Fruity Farmer and Willow Tree Gins. We
hope you’ll join us on the second Wednesday of the month for beer,
pizza and chat.
Staying Local
Staying local is about creating a strong and sustainable economy in
our community that offers worthwhile local jobs. It’s about bringing
good service from honest local businesses without crazy gimmicks
that are too good to be true. Most of all though it is about the
warm touch and welcome that enhances our experiences and our
environment too! What are you waiting for? Come on you know you
want to keep your business essentially local.

Pets
Rabbits Looking for Loving Homes
Lots of lovely animals at RSPCA Milton Keynes and
North Bucks are desperately looking for loving
homes. Homes that will feed them, care for them
and ensure their all needs are met.
Some of our lovely rabbits need you!
Midnight and Luna are lucky to be alive. After
someone tragically abandoned them on the roadside,
a kind member of the public spotted them and called
our National RSPCA Helpline. The RSPCA brought
them into our branch and one of our lovely fosterers
care for them. The delightful girls are probably about a
year old. Could you care for them?
Mac and Minnie are a very lucky pair, the loved up
bunnies were also collected from the roadside by
our inspector. Mac is a big grey bunny with the most
amazing ears, Minnie, his wife, is smaller and has a
lovely silky coat. Does your home have lots of space? If
it does, they’d be perfect for it!
All our adult rabbits are neutered, vaccinated and
microchipped. We request a donation of £50 for each
rabbit which
goes towards
our costs.
Rabbits are
social animals
and are best
kept in pairs.
The featured rabbits
must be rehomed
in their pairs. If you would like to meet any of the
branch’s rabbits please fill in the branch’s online
adoption form rspcamiltonkeynes.co.uk/smallanimals

It’s Father’s Day
This is the day we celebrate the father figures in our lives – after all, they sometimes
need a boost too! The tradition probably started in 1908 after a West Virginian woman
lost her father in a mining accident.
SHOW HIM YOU CARE
We usually celebrate Father’s Day with
cards and food, however, Germans like
to go on family hiking expeditions and
Mexicans run a race! Thai children wear
yellow flowers and give their dads and
grandfathers a Canna. All around the
world, whatever we do, it is about giving
quality time and showing how much you
love and respect that special man.
TOP TIP
Dad, with you
or not, its’ OK to
keep him in your
thoughts
IT'S NOT ALWAYS EASY
Dads don’t always take as
much care of themselves as
they should. Society puts a lot
of pressure on them to fit the
stereotypes and expectations,
making it difficult for them
to admit they are struggling
with their physical and mental
health.
If your dad is drinking more
than usual, taking drugs,
burying his head in work or
maybe always appearing
angry, he could be worried
about something, sad
or feeling depressed. He
probably won’t tell you or ask
for the help he needs.

GET HIM CHECKED
Dads are terrible for taking care
of their health. The NHS provides
simple screening tools to detect
conditions early. Early detection
means more easily sorted with
the right medication and lifestyle
changes. From urination issues to
lumps in the wrong places, funny
looking moles and constant heart
burn – get him checked.
He Can Feel
Better
About 1 in 8 men has a mental
health problem like depression,
anxiety or OCD. Men are less likely
to recognise or talk about their
problems and even less likely to ask
for help.
Look out for the tell-tale signs, like
changes in personality and low mood
but remember signs may not always be
obvious. Drunk and life and soul of the
party doesn’t always mean happy.
PREVENT NOT JUST CURE
1 in 5 men die early from preventable medical
conditions because they don’t ask their GP for help
or won’t take time off work. They blame fear and
embarrassment although sometimes don’t recognise
their problems. Greater awareness of symptoms and
taking the free NHS health checks is essential. Every
five years men between the ages of 40 and 74 can
have a check for early signs of stroke, kidney and
heart disease, type 2 diabetes and dementia.
If you are worried:
• Listen without judging
• Stay in contact, a simple text message
or phone call
• Help them to find support groups or
talking therapy.
• Encourage them to see their GP.
• Join them with making lifestyle
changes
If you feel like they need immediate
help:

Dad is at risk:
60% of men are overweight or obese and the short terms gains of
smoking, drugs & alcohol actually make physical and mental health
worse. Get them to:
Exercise Well - to reduce weight, cancer risks, blood pressure and

Eat Healthily - with fresher diet, fewer sugars to reduce weight,

Celebrating the Iconic British Sandwich
It’s the start of the picnic season and Father’s Day is just around the
corner. With warmer days ahead of us, let’s rediscover the joys of the
iconic British fast food - the sandwich.
ON-THE-GO
Every year, The British Sandwich & Food to Go
Association organises British Sandwich Week. This
year that takes place between 22-28 May – in time
for thinking about the best locally-sourced fillings
for a special Father’s Day treat. Make the most of
our local countryside and parks with this fabulous
on-the-go food.
FACT
We eat 3.8 billion
shop bought
sandwiches
every year!
FRESHNESS VS CONVENIENCE
Homemade bread filled with your favourite
ingredients are normally the best sarnies,
however, local sandwich shops know exactly
how to create a yummy bite to eat!
It seems we care about freshness but
manufacturers often try to increase the shelflife
of sandwiches. In 2017, Food Manufacture
reported that Booker planned to extend the
sandwich life to 14 days by removing salad
products, using oatmeal breads, mixing fillings
with a slightly acidic mayonnaise and flushing
the pack with carbon dioxide and nitrogen.
We also care about cost, and in 2018, we
were concerned when Channel 5 reported
sandwiches often have less filling than
advertised.
There is a place for all sandwiches and most
supermarkets provide the freshness we want.
Freshly made in front of you is always best!

WHAT MAKES IT A
SANDWICH?
The 4th Earl of Sandwich created the
sandwich by putting a filling in bread
to avoid interrupting his card game
by eating a meal. Sandwiches are
no longer limited to triangles, there
are rolls, baguettes, pitta, wraps and
bagels. A burger doesn’t count though,
and even though a panini does, it’s not
a sandwich to me!

INFLUENCES FROM
AROUND THE
WORLD
Bacon beats egg
sandwiches in the
popularity stakes,
however ham and cheese
follows closely behind. Countries around the world are
increasingly influencing more traditional choices:
1. Croque Monsieur – the French fill this beauty
with Gruyère cheese and ham, then cover it in
bechamal sauce.
2. Smoorebrode – this traditional Danish recipe
includes pickled herring (marinerede sild) and
red onion on rye bread with a sprig of dill.
3. Belegte Brot – Germans love these open
sandwiches particularly on Sundays. White or dark
rye bread is layered with horseradish butter, smoked
salmon, salami, boiled egg or even steak, and pickles
are added.
4. Jerk Chicken Wraps – a traditional Jamaican
sandwich that brings spicy jerk seasoning to chicken,
which is complimented with fruity salsa and a spicy
mayo.
5. Club Sandwich – a 19th century New York
gambling club invention. Three slices of toasted
bread are topped with sliced turkey, bacon, lettuce,
tomato and tangy mayonnaise.
12 Ideas for
Picnic Foods
Most of us get nostalgic with family
memories when we talk the very British
picnic.
Despite its British roots, the word picnic
comes from the French verb piquer

Give Dad an ARTea Treat
It’s Father’s Day on 19 June, and you can show
your dad how important he really is.
Book a table and raise his energy levels for a great
day with an ARTea cooked breakfast. He’s sure to love
the well-seasoned sausages, rashers of sizzling, salty
bacon and yummy black pudding! With perfectly fried
egg, flavoursome mushrooms, hash brown and baked
beans the hunger pangs won’t appear anytime soon!
Too late for breakfast? Morning coffee and cake will
show how easily temptation can get the better of him.
Tasty Victoria sandwich, coffee cake are only the start –
wait until you see the full range.
Can he hold on until lunchtime for a sandwich or
toastie on a choice of bread with salad & crisps,
or jacket potato? A hotpot with rustic roll or giant
Yorkshire pudding could appeal more. For a smaller
appetite, there’s home-made soup and, at ARTea
gluten-free and vegetarian choices are catered for.
Compliment the food, with a real ale, lager or wine;
soft drinks and fruit juices are also available.
Of course, the ARTea
Afternoon Tea is the best
treat of all sandwiches, fresh
fruit, cakes and scrumptious
scones with clotted cream
and strawberry jam, why
wouldn’t you?
You’ll definitely need to
head to the estate’s lovely
footpaths to walk off all the delicious food!

Has Your Parcel Disappeared?
Since lockdown more people than ever are ordering
on line for an easy and convenient doorstep delivery.
However, more and more consumers complain that
parcels are disappearing after a delivery company has
claimed to have left the parcel on the doorstep or with a
neighbour.
When you call the delivery company to report the
missing parcel, they may well send you a photograph
claiming to prove that they delivered the item and will
do no more to help. Trading Standards advise you that
this is not proof that they have delivered the parcel to
you – if is merely a photograph of your house.
If the seller refuses to help you, they have the burden of
proving that the ‘risk in the goods’ (the responsibility for
the items) has passed to you. The law says that seller of
the goods remains responsible for them until the goods
come into your physical possession. Basically this means
when the goods are in your hands.
If you want a neighbour to take in your delivery, then you
can specify this to the seller and the goods remain the
responsibility of the
trader until they are
in the hands of your
neighbour.
When a company
leaves goods outside
your house, the seller
takes on the risk that
the goods might be
stolen. That seller
should then take
the necessary steps
to refund you or
resend the goods if
necessary.
For these issues and assistance call the Consumer
helpline 0808 223 1133.

Dream Garden, Dream Home
This year, home and garden is all about green! Colour, décor, sustainable choices and planting that
brings calm and comfort. It’s a simple greener and more natural approach that will hopefully bring
greater appreciation of our environment - inside and out!
EMBRACE NATURE AT HOME
During the lockdown home working, people
up and down the country installed every style
of garden office and took to growing their
own. The trend continues and we’re embracing
nature to improve our wellbeing at home and
work. It’s all about finding ways to incorporate
nature as the natural stress reliever that we
know it is into our lives.
TOP TIP
Basil, oregano, chives,
thyme and tarragon
are all easy to grow
herbs.
GREEN IT UP
Designers say begin by blurring the
division between home and garden
by encouraging nature to come
inside and living areas to head out.
Choose subtle chalky green wall
paints like the Dulux Olive Sprig
to create a natural calmness in
rooms. Upgrade your patio doors
to discover the joys of your garden
– more glass will enhance natural
lighting and open doors will
improve ventilation in your home.
Add house plants to maximise the
natural connection gained from
different textures, colours and
shapes of leaves like ferns, cacti and
succulents. Include cut and pot
flowers into the mix for colour and
scent and to improve your mood,
reduce stress and even work better!
HEALTHY FLOORS
Fibre rugs include jute, sisal and seagrass
– they are relatively cheap and yet are
durable. The natural fibres are not usually
treated with harmful chemicals so are
better for your health and as they’re
biodegradable better for the planet too!

USE THE OUTSIDE
Establish living areas and a kitchen in your garden to
realise the extra room we all need. The latest weatherproof
furniture fabrics and gazebos mixed with exciting
lighting and outdoor heating make gardens accessible
whatever the time of day or weather. Overhead
coverings will protect from the elements. Natural
weatherproof materials like stone and wood ensure low
maintenance and a BBQ on wheels can be easily moved
and stored.
Herb and veggie gardens
in raised beds, hanging
planters or a box on a
sunny window bring
sensory aromas and colour
to the garden as well as
providing culinary delights.
Don’t Dread
the BBQ
If you love a BBQ follow our 9
simple steps to enjoy food that
won’t be charred on the outside,
raw on the in!
1. Clean the grill of old oil and food
when it’s warm.
2. Let flames die down and when the
coals are red with a covering of ash,
start to cook.
3. Cook food on the edge as the
indirect heat of the coals will cook
more evenly.
4. Use the lid and air vent that comes
with the BBQ to save fuel, cook faster
and retain juices.
5. Bring the meat to room temperature
or start it in the oven, finishing on the
charcoal.
6. Pre-soak wooden skewers in water
to reduce risk of them burning.
7. Marinated meats won’t cook as
quickly or dry out
8. Wrap the food in foil to avoid burns
and keep sauces in.
9. Sugar and honey marinades will
burn more easily, coat only in the last
few minutes.
4 WAYS TO SAVE MONEY & YOUR BACK
1. No-dig gardening will take away effort, pain
and reduce trips to the physio. It’s also great for the
environment as worms do the work. Take a look at
Charles Dowding.
2. Compost is easy and although larger composts
are more effective, wormeries are perfect for small
spaces. gardenersworld.com/product-guides/
nature/best-wormeries
3. Choose seed swaps and cuttings for fruit, veg
and flowers. Use library books to show you how.
4. Bees and insect attracting, scented plants
like brightly coloured foxgloves, roses, jasmine,
honeysuckle will help manage the bugs you don’t
want without costly chemicals.

now looking forward
to planting the
summer bedding. The
royal colour scheme will be red, white and
blue in celebration of Queen Elizabeth with
flowers like pelargoniums, petunias, lobelia
and bluebells adorning the streets.
Three new volunteers joined the team
of helpers to weed, prune and tidy in
preparation for summer planting. More
volunteers are needed to help with the
ground level planting. AxiomB2 take care
of the lamp post baskets and water them
while residents help by watering doorstep
planters.

Package Holiday vs DIY
Post pandemic package holidays are becoming increasingly
popular, but is package best for you?
Remove the Stress
When one tour operator or travel agent organises your flight,
accommodation, car hire and attractions it is a package holiday.
This will reduce your effort and stress!
Understanding your Needs?
Package holidays do not necessarily give you individuality or the
authenticity you want. They may cater for general interests with
convenient swimming pools and western style food. If the agent
is receiving commission for booking a particular flight or hotel,
they may encourage you to select that holiday rather than taking
you to the remote areas you really want.
Protecting Your Money
The Package Travel and Linked Travel regulations give you legal
and financial protection. ABTA members Ts & Cs currently include
flexible cancellations, rebooking and refund policies. They will
sort out your problems. And, if their business folds you can claim
a refund or if already at your destination your return flights are
covered.
Do It Yourself
Look at the government website for travel restrictions, visa
requirements, COVID, wars and events before choosing a
destination. Once you know where you are going pick dates
around the weather - think Monsoon season!
Book your flights ahead to save money and check if you need to
book accommodation too. In quieter months and locations, it can
be better to find the right place to stay when you arrive.
Roads can be dangerous so look at travel reviews before booking
local bus trips. Clarify all eventualities before hiring a car and get
an international driving licence. Things can go wrong so book
your holiday insurance cover to start immediately.
Whatever you do enjoy your holiday and stay safe.
Classic Stony
9.30am-4pm, Sunday 5 June
Free for spectators, donations
for Willen Hospice accepted. £5
to display your vehicle or £10 to
reserve a car-spot.
It’s back, yes this Classic Car Festival
is once again, bringing the informal
gathering of classic and vintage cars
and motorcycles to the streets of
Stony Stratford. From gleaming to
well-used, cars will be 25 years old
or older, however, supercars and
other interesting / unusual vehicles
are also welcome.
The event is part of Stony Live Week
and is run in partnership with Stony
Stratford Business Association. There
will be live music all day, and pubs,
restaurants and shops will be open.
Enjoy the displays, food and drink,
and all the other delights of Stony
Stratford.

Cloudy2Clear, A Local
Service With A Smile.
Established for over 16 years,
Cloudy2Clear windows have
become the UK’s leading
company for domestic glass
replacement. Customers are
no longer needing to risk their
windows by using the dreaded
double glazing cowboy down the
road, instead, now they can join
over 320,000 happy customers
and have their glass replaced in
an affordable and ethical manner.
Remember, a failed glass unit may
no longer provide you with the
protection you need or be energy
efficient. Why not spend a few
minutes checking your home to
see if you have any failed double
glazing? If you act now you can
avoid any future costly problems.
values have been held dear for a
number of years. Since starting
the business some years ago
Cloudy2Clear have remained true
to their core values of supporting
the local community by providing a
service that saves the public money.
The Cloudy2Clear service only
requires the glass to be replaced
and not the whole window once the
unit has failed. Stephen commented
“Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our
community through the last financial
crisis in 2008 due to the savings that
can be made in using our service.
Unfortunately we might be going
through something similar again soon
and the public can rest assured that
we will be there to help once again”.
All C2C employees
operate a strict social
distancing policy.
