Feature
Restaurant Making a Difference
Walk into Namji in Wolverton and you’ll be greeted by one of the friendliest smiles you could wish for.
Real Vision
Naseem Khan, owner of this small, welcoming restaurant is clearly proud of her achievements and so she should
be. Despite having no experience in running a restaurant, Naseem had a vision. She’d seen the Market Square
premises standing empty when she approached the landlord. Despite the risk, she took on the lease to open to
favourable reviews in January 2017. Since then her reputation for providing excellent food and service has grown
even more.
Aah the Flavours
The food takes on a Punjabi influence with plenty of flavoursome spices, lentils, vegetables and meats. Many of
the dishes are cooked for hours to enhance the diner’s experience. There are the traditional influences that we
love, while other dishes come
from takes on family favourites
and the Kenyan seaside.
Naseem explains that the
service may be slower than
some because every dish is
home-cooked to order to
ensure the freshness and
flavours are at their best. It’s
definitely worth the wait.
Warm, Authentic Surroundings
The décor and setting are warm and authentic but it is Naseem
who really makes the experience as she stands front of house
welcoming and serving customers. With only eight tables you
will be looked after properly and almost feel at home. Book to
make sure you get a table.
Community Venture
While Naseem has a passion to share the delicious food that she
grew up with as a child in Kenya, she is also eager to give back
to the local community. She is as determined as ever to help
local women, particularly from other cultures, to develop skills in
a safe and secure environment.
Learning New Skills
When she began her restaurant she worked with three local
women, teaching them to cook and prepare food. Her ultimate
goal, through Give Back 2U UK, is to provide training to
women. This work will help them learn to speak better English,
gain skills in food hygiene, First Aid, CV writing, interview skills
and more. The aim is to give them confidence while respecting
their cultures. Visit giveback2u.co.uk for more details.
And Finally
HELP OUT
If you would like
to get involved with
Give Back 2U give
Naseem a call!
This is a restaurant worth visiting, not just to taste the great
food and meet Naseem but because of all she does for this
great local community.
Hello Readers...
What an exciting edition we have for you again. Spring is
definitely arriving for me and I’m starting to think about
all the things I want and need to do with the improving
weather. I confess to being little slow when it comes to
tidying the house; I prefer doing things outside or arts
and crafts. If you are like me our home and garden pages
may help to get you going!
Love your Dog’s Heart
Valentine's Day has been and gone, but you still...
love your dog's heart.
The Veterinary Centre is offering a screening programme.
Certain breeds and ages of dogs are particularly at risk of
developing heart disease – especially small breeds like
Spaniels and large breeds over 25kg in weight. Recent
research shows that by picking up heart problems in
affected dogs before clinical symptoms develop (poor
exercise tolerance, shortness of breath, cough, weight loss)
the quality and the length of life for these pets will improve.
Clinical trials have demonstrated a clear benefit with those
being treated in the early stages. On average they will have
15 months longer before clinical signs develop and also a
longer lifespan overall.
Making Time for Mum
On 8 March it’s International Women’s Day and then on 31, it’s Mothering
Sunday. Women’s Day aims to build a gender-balanced world at home, at
play, in sport, in the media and in work. Mothering Sunday is a day to honour
mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers and mothers-in-law. Make the special
LIFT6 FACIAL TREATMENTS
Elanele offer this technique to tone, strengthen
and rejuvenate our skin. It works on the deepest
levels of the skin to stimulate the production
of collagen and elastin which smooths and
plumps it. Not only are wrinkles reduced
but facial contours are lifted and our skin will
become radiant.
Taking up
a sport
UK guidelines advise that adults
should do strength exercises, 150
minutes of moderate exercise and
75 minutes of vigorous activity
every week. Evidence suggests
that we in the UK are among the
least active people in the world
and few of us reach the targets.
It’s often easy to get going but even
easier to fall out of the routine so:
1. Set yourself a realistic goal –
weight loss, health or fitness, maybe
target an event.
2. Build up slowly to prevent injury.
3. Get support from joining classes
or working with a friend.
4. Vary your activities – high
intensity, core strengthening,
intervals.
5. Get over it – don’t let the negative
comments or weather put you off
and don’t look in the mirror.
6. Reward yourself with a relaxing
sports massage every so often.
Healthy Eating,
Healthy Teeth
We know that daily brushing is essential for a
beautiful smile, but did you know that nutrition plays
an important part for healthy teeth and gums?
Planning meals and snacks
A balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, protein foods,
calcium-rich foods and whole grains provide
essential nutrients for optimum oral health. So try
to resist planning meals and lunchboxes with sugary
treats and carbohydrates. Instead, make more
healthy choices such as raw vegetables, fruits, plain
yogurt and popcorn and choose water instead of
sweetened drinks. Also, by getting a bit creative and
making food look fun for kids, you can help them
learn to love their food.
If you would like your children to learn more about
Well-Being
All Mums Need a Treat
The cries of laughter echoed round the school
playground. The children were having fun, but as
Jane turned to Sam she realised just how shattered
her friend was. “You could do with a day off Sam,” she
said, with that knowing look on her face. “A day to
relax and not have to think about running the children
here, there and everywhere, not to do the shopping
or cleaning, need I go on?” Sam knew exactly what
she meant, the last few weeks had been difficult. She
wanted to spend time with her family, relaxing with a
safe place for the children to enjoy too.
“I know exactly what you need,” Jane said smiling.
“What are you doing for Mother’s Day? We are heading
up to ARTea Room at Wakefield Country Courtyard for
one of their delicious cream teas. Believe me they’re
so generous you won’t need to cook. You can sit and
relax with Mark while the children run around outside,
there’s a climbing frame or books when they come in.
I’m having the luxury cream tea, of course, with a glass
of fizz as you know how much I love it. It’s honestly
the perfect Mother’s Day treat.”
It was perfect and so she decided
to book a table, as it gets so busy,
and invite her mum
too. The delicious
cream tea includes
a plain, fruit, cherry
or gluten free oven
warm scone, served
with strawberry
jam, Cornish Clotted
cream and a selection
of fresh fruit alongside
a pot of tea of your
choice. Afterall, all
mums need a treat.
New Bradwell & Me
MK City Discovery Centre started its new Bradwell
Abbey and Me film and oral history project in
February. Working with Inter-Action MK, Living
Archive MK and Liisa Clark Art, the project will focus
on how our communities identify with Milton Keynes
by recording their experiences of first memories of
both Bradwell Abbey and Milton Keynes through
film, interviews, art, sculpture, oral history and nature.
The project will invite volunteers to help with site
management, training, supervision and overall event
and workshop delivery.
MK City Discovery Centre would love to hear from
you if you have a story to tell about Bradwell Abbey.
Cooking up a Treat
The supermarket may give choice and save time but there is a lot to be said
for going local for food. We’ve found a few delights to tantalise your taste
buds and tips that could save you money.
SAVE MONEY AND CUT YOUR WASTE
1. Store veg like celery or carrots in fresh water in
the fridge
2. Freeze your milk
3. Compost what you don’t use, turn bread
into crumbs!
TOP TIP
Write a food plan
and a shopping list
- stick to it!
TACKLING FOOD WASTE
Using the Wolverton Community Fridge
at The Old Bath House on Stratford Road
reduces quality food going to landfill. The
project diverted 16 tons from the bin to
homes in their first year!
This initiative aims to help people and
businesses share unwanted food. Visitors
are welcome to give and take food items
using two fridges and shelves located in the
foyer of the community centre. The food
is free but must be weighed and logged
in and out. Food shared is for personal
consumption and donations can be made
via localgiving.org
Thursdays 6.30am-5pm or Fridays 7.30am-5pm, £4.99 fed 3,
A TASTE OF JAPAN
Akasaka, local authentic Japanese Kitchen, is based
in Wolverton where owners, John and Julie, have
impressed customers with tasty offerings since
2014. Their food is artistic, colourful and precise in
presentation and it’s also incredibly healthy.
Japanese food is low in calories, has the perfect
nutritional balance and at Akasaka they use the
freshest ingredients. Here, you will be guaranteed
an incredible selection of superfood dishes.
Recipes like sushi, sashimi, raman, tempura, miso
generally come with vegetarian, fish, and meat
options. Some of the dishes contain raw produce
which is essential to the benefits of this style – high
temperatures can reduce the flavour and nutritional
value. Research shows that key ingredients like soy,
tofu, aduki and edamame beans support a healthy
digestive system. There are also some delicious
Korean, Chinese and Indian influenced dishes to try!
It’s not just about the food here though, you’ll also
love the welcoming experience. Book a table or
order a takeaway. Make sure you sign up to their
website or download the mobile app.
The first British playground for children opened in
was started in Germany. They have changed so much
over time. Can you believe that at one time play was
directed and girls and boys had to play separately?
After the war they were even built on old bomb sites. If
Alex, Trainee of the
Month
Congratulations to Alex from Growing People at
the Urb Farm. Alex was chosen out of all of the
young people who are currently in training at MK
Christian Foundation, an "all faiths and none" charity
based in Wolverton. Alex was awarded the January
"Trainee of the Month" for many reasons. He has
a positive attitude in
English. He takes his role
as a learning mentor
seriously, is supportive
to his peers and goes out
of his way to be cheerful.
He is also a good role
model who speaks
courteously to staff and
fellow trainees. He's also
proud to be a member
of the Growing People
Team.
Well done Alex and
everyone at Growing
People.
Pupils Awarded
Congratulations to St Mary and St Giles
pupils who achieved the Level 5 in the RHS
Campaign for School Gardening Award – the
highest award possible. They were assisted by
volunteers for Stony Stratford in Bloom. Pupils
harvested the vegetables they had grown, made
pumpkin soup and served it to pupils, staff and
parents.
Celebrations
Jessica, an Incredible
Role Model
Jessica and Harry were 5 years old when they
celebrated their last birthday together. A few months
later Harry died unexpectedly leaving Jessica an only
child. The family set up Harry's Rainbow to support
bereaved children.
Seven years ago,
Jessica came up with
the amazing event,
Jessica's Rainbow
Run, to remember
Harry and help to raise
the funds needed to
support children in
Milton Keynes. It’s a
family fun day and 1 mile walk/run for children of all
ages. Jessica, now 15, is also the youth ambassador
for the charity and helps out with the Youth Group at
monthly sessions. In addition, she helps at events and
makes up memory boxes for children.
Jessica congratulations on being a role model to all
young people.
Success at Rosemary
Lane School of Ballet
At the end of November 2018, the young dancers
of the Rosemary Lane School of Ballet entered their
Royal Academy of Dance Ballet Exams. After weeks
of anticipation, the results finally came through in
January. Students from 6 years of age upwards took
Graded Examinations from Primary Grade to Grade 8 and
Vocational Grades to Advanced Foundation. The incredible
results are a reflection of the dedication of the dancers and
their committed teachers. The students achieved a 100%
pass rate with all students gaining a Merit Grade or above.
Well done to all.
The students now move
on to prepare for their
annual showcase at
Stantonbury Theatre in
May and the Grade 4 class
are very excited to be
finally going onto pointe.
Report it!
More than half of all victims of
crime don’t tell the police, often
because they don’t believe there is
any point. As a result crimes then
can’t be investigated or recorded
as incidents for insurance.
In addition, trends can’t be
monitored accurately.
At the beginning of this year this
area was hit by a spate of break-ins
and thefts. Businesses, community
interest companies and children’s
bikes from schools were targeted.
Here is your guide to knowing
what to report where:
Reporting a crime may prevent
another one and it could keep
people safe. If a crime happens to
you or you have witnessed one
- REPORT IT
Emergencies - for muggings
and attacks. Your call should be
answered within 10 seconds and
the police will talk to you. Dial 999.
Non-emergency crimes – stolen
cars or mobile phone, damage
to property, suspected drug use,
dealing with a neighbour, giving
information about a crime in
your area and general enquiries.
Dial 101.
Anonymous reporting
Crimestoppers lets you report
a crime anonymously. Call
Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Anti-social behaviour
Report anti-social behaviour to
the local neighbourhood policing
team who will advise you what
to do. If the council or a housing
association is your landlord, report
it to them. Where fears for safety
are concerned, report directly to
the police.
Hate crime, dial 999
Police treat hate crime as a priority.
Hate relates to race culture,
nationality and language; religion
and belief; sexual orientation;
transgender identity; disability
including physical or mental
impairment, or learning disabilities.
Fraud
Contact Action Fraud any time of
the day or night for reporting fraud
Reasonable day-to-day activities
A win/win
investment
solution for you
and your family
If you want to invest for your children
there are two simple solutions available
that allow you to build up a significant
tax-free sum for them for when they are
older, as well as reduce your own taxes
now.
#1 – Junior ISA (JISA)
Like a normal adult ISA there is an
annual maximum allowance that you
can pay into a Junior ISA (£4,260 for the
2018/19 tax year) and money inside a
Junior ISA grows tax-free.
#2 – Junior Self Invested Personal
Pension (JSIPP)
For your own personal
Financial Director to run your
family finances call:
Carl Roberts FPFS, Chartered
Financial Planner
carl@rtsfinancialplanning.co.uk
RTS Financial Planning Limited is authorised and
regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
Registered in England and Wales. Registration
number 10619163. 21 Fosters Lane, Bradwell, Milton
Keynes, MK13 9HZ
If you would prefer that your children
or grandchildren have to wait longer to
access the money you invest for them then you could pay into a Junior SIPP.
Providing the child is under 18 you can set up a Junior SIPP and pay in up
to £2,880 per annum. The beauty of this is that the government will pay in
an extra 20% in the form of tax relief so your payment gets topped up to
£3,600.
A great app for getting a better
deal on your utilities
This app has saved me so much time by automatically comparing energy
prices for me. In fact, it does so much more than this, it’s like my very own
digital PA!
Onedox stores all your household bills in one place. Rather than searching
through the filing cabinet to locate your car insurance policy or the costs
of your last BT phone bill, you can find it all inside your Onedox app. It also
recognises when they are due for renewal and will alert you in plenty of
time.
Best of all, just before renewal, Onedox will automatically compare energy
prices, mobile phone and broadband to find you better deals based on your
previous usage.
Risk warning: Stock market linked investments and any income from them, can fall as well as rise and are not guaranteed. Any figures
quoted are for illustrative purposes and should not be taken as a forecast or guarantee. Past performance should not be seen as an
indication of future returns and clients may get back less than they have invested.
How To Save
Here are 3 ideas that can get
you saving even when you don’t
have any money.
#1 – Let your employer and the
government save for you
Your employer should already
have set up a pension for you
and you may be making some
small payments in. But did
you know that every time you
put money into a pension the
government top it up by 20%.
What’s more a lot of companies
now match what their
employees pay in. So you pay in
£100, the government pays in
£25 and your employer pays in
another £100. That’s £125 free
money!
#2 – Stop paying fees
Some banks charge an account
fee for additional services like
mobile phone insurance and
breakdown cover. The deal is
probably not great so question
whether you really need that
premium account.
#3 – Round up your spending
Every time you spend, round up
the cost to the nearest pound
and deposit the difference into a
savings or investment account.
Rounding up just £1 a day, over
a year that’s £365 and if you
earned 6% a year investing it,
your total pot could be worth
just under £2,000 in 3 years time!
Just spending as you normally
would.
The Rewards of Wellbeing
5th year in business in January this year
– a true reflection of the excellent service
they deliver to local residents. Led by Holly
Jenkins and Stuart Lovell, this team now
bring us a full range of beauty, health and
well-being services. This is an even happier
New Jeweller in Town
After 11 years of trading in Wolverton, just before
Christmas, family-owned Barović Jewellers decided
to move their shop to Stony Stratford. They are now
flourishing, with praise for their friendly service and
high quality products. Customers also love to see their
bespoke jewellery come to life with the Barović design
and manufacture service. Pop along, say hello and you’ll
find the same welcoming greeting as always. Wishing
the Barović team the best of luck!
Small Businesses
Working Together
This is a personal thank you! Last year, Phil Willoughby
from CycleTech offered to service the bike that I
borrowed when I cycled the length of the country.
He also taught me a few basic mechanics and this
was invaluable, in fact he went on to service my own
bike giving sensible advice. When small businesses
work together you achieve great things. Would I
recommend him – yes I would.
Products with a Conscience
Sew and Grow is an exciting local social enterprise project which creates
hand-crafted, artisan products using recycled and naturally-dyed fabrics.
Developing Skills
Sew and Grow offers young people a different, more
practical kind of training. They may have struggled in
a traditional educational setting; here they can learn
within a working environment and reconnect with the
making process.
Sustainable and Kind to the Environment
Every product produced is natural and its impact on
the environment kept to a minimum.
When we say natural, we mean natural. Plants like
indigo and woad and food waste such as avocado
skins, blackberries, turmeric and even red onion skins
are used to dye fabrics into an incredible array of
colours. Many of the plants are even grown at the Urb
Farm while others like coffee, tea and black beans are
easily accessed from the store cupboard. Each dye is
kind to the environment, animals and humans – with
no harmful chemicals.
To Dye For
These natural dyes produce some amazing vibrant
colours. This team has experimented and the
outcomes reflect the seasons and natural environment
and are bright enough to be eye-catching.
Experiments with Hapa Zome, which translates as
‘leaf bashing’ produced incredible colourful, abstract
artworks.
Let it Bee
Once dyed and sewn, the trainees apply beeswax to
finish certain products. This gives a tougher more
resistant, waterproof finish. The beeswax is sourced
locally from Sew and Grow’s sister enterprise Urban
Beelievers.
Quality Gifts
The products make perfect practical gifts, with designs
for men and women. You can buy tote bags, toilet
bags and even cushions that become even more
beautiful with age and use. Some products are also
lined giving better durability and a chic look.
With Mother’s Day coming up...
That’s Not Nearly all
This year Sew and Grew began work on researching
products which are sustainable as well practical. A
new range is planned to include reusable menstrual
pads, sponges and bags.
Mission with a Passion
Sew and Grow is passionate about developing
young people’s skills, being kind to environment and
producing products that we love and value.
Professional
Trading Rights
When spring cleaning your home and garden morphs
into a home improvement project, protect yourself
from being caught out.
Be wary of doorstep callers - reputable builders
will not cold call on you at home, they usually have
enough work that they don’t need to do this.
14 day cancellation notices is your entitlement once
work is agreed. If your trader doesn’t give you notice,
they’ll commit an offence. Deal with a business who is
aware of your consumer legal rights.
Check that your trader is qualified eg. NICEIC
electrician or Gas Safe plumber. They risk committing
a criminal offence if they make a false claim, be safe
and use a different trader.
A deposit should be a maximum of 10% of the full
contract value and is non-refundable. Additional up
front amounts are classed as a part-payment and
could be refundable.
Use a credit card for contracts over £100, the credit
card company will then be jointly liable if anything
goes wrong.
Ask friends
and family for
recommendations.
Approved Trader
Schemes offer
varying degrees of
protection. Some
allow the trader to
buy membership
with no checks,
others post feedback
which may or may
not be genuine. Others ask for criminal records checks,
references and offer mediation services if the job
goes wrong. Make checks to reduce risk of a difficult
dispute.
For any related concerns call Citizens Advice
Get your home and garden back on the priority to do list this spring. Not
sure where to begin? Start with the things that have been frustrating you all
winter and that if you don’t do now you’ll still be thinking about next year!
KERB APPEAL
Your front door is probably the most used door in your
home so buy the best you can afford. It’ll help with kerb
appeal, protection and keep the heat in and cold out. Match
the material, colour and look to the style of your home.
Think about maintenance levels, energy efficiency and
resistance to the weather and other knocks. Talk to our local
suppliers about options including timber, composite, uPVC
or aluminium. Prevent an expensive mistake!
TOP TIP
Use local, buy
local, be local!
RECLAIM SPACE
Mount your TV to your wall and tidy
connecting cables and plugs with cheap
solutions like wire-based or Velcro ties,
mounting clips or cable channels. For a
more professional look, feed the cables
through walls - stud or dot and dab are
easier and solid
walls will require
re-plastering.
The right fixings
will stop your TV
from falling off or
tearing the wall
down. MKL Cable
Solutions can offer
the right solution –
give them a call!
MAKE YOUR OVEN SPARKLE
Get your oven cleaned after all the winter roasts and
Christmas extravaganzas. Let it sparkle inside and out.
PUTTING ON A FRONT
A whole new kitchen can be expensive so
look to replacement doors. If your basic
cabinets are in good condition and the
layout works, new doors and handles will
bring it up-to-date. It’s a greener and less
wasteful option too. Dream Doors offer a
great range of prices and styles and they’ll
also check the condition of your units
particularly sink cabinets.
SWEEP YOUR CHIMNEY
Balance the joys of a real fire with safety
and efficiency. A sweep will remove the
build-up of soot and highly flammable
creosote, reducing risk of fire and leaving
your fire to burn more efficiently. A
good clean also prevents harmful gases
from entering your room.
Clean open fires and
wood-burners once or
twice a year and gas flues
less frequently. Call in the
professionals to avoid the
mess!
TOP TIP
For a quick fix,
paint the doors and
fit new handles
and knobs.
Top Tips for
a Spring
Clean
1. De-clutter books, clothes, shoes,
toys, equipment - store, put away,
sell, charity or throw – be firm!
2. Move furniture and clean under,
don’t forget skirting boards.
3. Dispose of out-of-date food in
your cupboards, fridge and freezer.
4. Safely dispose of out-of-date
medicines. Wash or replace bath
mats and shower curtains.
5. Vacuum mattresses, freshen
duvets and pillows outside, or dry
clean.
Try our favourite green
household solutions:
Glass – lint-free cloth with distilled
vinegar with water.
Surfaces and tiles – 2 parts
distilled vinegar with 1 part baking
soda and 4 parts water.
Floors and furniture – 1 cup of
olive oil with ½ cup of lemon juice.
Toilet – straight vinegar outside
(also good for mould and mildew)
and baking soda inside.
Fridge – 2tbs baking soda
dissolved in 1 litre warm water.
Washing up – washable cleaning
clothes/ sponges and coconut
scourers.
Trends & Organisation
CORAL TONES
Living coral or Pantone 16-1546 has been named
colour of the year for 2019 – so this is something
you might see creeping into interior trends this
year. Think shades of coral, a vibrant and energetic
colour – but don’t be alarmed it looks beautiful with
simple paired back neutrals, a move towards the
more conscious and sustainable. That’s where I will
be taking it.
EFFECTIVE ORGANISING
This leads me nicely onto my
next thought and moving
towards spring. With the
often-fraught ideas of January
detox’s and decluttering
programmes on the rise,
think about what you really
need. Organise your spaces
accordingly and then give
things a new lease of life
– be it upcycling, selling,
giving to charity. Don’t just bin, think about your
environmental footprint when making decisions.
START SMALL
TOP TIP
Don't be afraid
to get organised
and rehome your
unwanted bits!
Start tackling the small jobs that you’ve been
putting off, you’ll find plenty of ideas and suppliers
in here. Maybe you want to refresh the walls, re-jig
the furniture to give your space a refresh or tackle
outdoor spaces in time for spring.
In my case, I need to get all my bulbs ready to
harvest (hopefully) an abundance of fresh flowers in
the next few months. I loved the little colour pops of
hellebores and snowdrops earlier this year.
I CAN HELP YOU...
Hello I'm Pippa and I believe we should all live in spaces we
love. I can help you with practical advice from selling your home,
finding inspired solutions for challenging spaces, home styling
and accessorising, to a full revamp and more. My knowledge of
all things home and design combined with my friendly approach
property size or design preferences, I would love to hear from you.
Leisure
Stony Stratford Theatre Society's 2019
Panto - Robin in StonyLand
Yet again our little town panto rocked. York House was
full, both the bar and Stony Sweet Shop's yummy stall
pretty much sold out. Everyone involved had a fine
time. The cast were aged 8ish to 80ish, we had original
music from Neil Mercer, fabulous words from Shelia
White, the talented cast had the audience rolling with
laughter, booing like good 'uns and singing along
with great gusto.
Huge thanks to all for their support including
Odell's, Carters Rentals, The Masons in New Street,
Community Arts Resource Centre and David Pibworth
of MK Theatre of Comedy who all enabled the magic
to happen.
"Amazing show! Had such a good time, wonderful
songs and Brexit jokes, the choreography in the Merry
Men song was insane! Well done everyone."
Here's to 2020!
Join the MK Midnight Moo
Willen Hospice is
calling on local
women to sign
up for this year’s
MK Midnight Moo
which takes place on
13 July.
In addition to the
popular 10 mile walk, Willen Hospice has introduced
a brand new Half-Moo. The new route is just over
half the distance, 6.3 miles, but promises to be just as
much fun.
This iconic event raised more than £120,000 last year
with walkers starting and finishing at intu Milton
Keynes. Whatever your walking skill, from beginner to
experienced you can join the fun. Walk on your own
and meet fellow walkers or even in pairs or as a team.
Willen Hospice Chief Executive Peta Wilkinson said:
“I was thrilled to be part of last year’s MK Midnight
Moo walking alongside 1000 other women, all
raising money to support our care. This is our biggest
fundraising event of the year and we’re so excited to
be launching it for 2019.”
The registration fee of only £20 covers the cost of the
event - the fundraising is key to the Moo’s success.
This year’s theme is disco and the organisers can’t wait
to see how walkers will embrace it. There should be
some interesting disco attire! Once again, Specsavers
Milton Keynes are supporting the Midnight Moo.
Willen Hospice needs to raise £4.7 million every year,
that’s £9 a minute, to continue to provide care to
patients in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas. The
MK Midnight Moo is a key event that helps the Hospice
to reach that goal. Can you help?
Spring Gardens
As the days get lighter and the air warmer you can begin to prepare your
garden for summer. Take a look at the lovely work carried out by the local in
Bloom Teams to get some ideas and perhaps you could give them a hand too!
WOOD YOU CARE?
Prevent your fences and gates from rotting by
following these steps:
• Check for wood rot and rusted hinges
• Remove plant debris from the base of the fence
• Power wash with a stiff brush to remove dirt, moss etc
from the panels
• Dry and then paint with preservative/wood paint like these
Sadolin products from Linnell Bros.
TOP TIP
Work on one small
project at a time
and finish it
PUTTING IN A NEW FENCE
• Use pressure-treated timber, treated with a
wood preservative.
• Use metal or concrete posts with gravel to
help water to drain.
• Cut the top of the fence posts at a slight
angle to allow rain to run off.
STONY STRATFORD IN BLOOM
In between the rain, frost and snow, Stony in Bloom volunteers
have tidied beds and planted new shrubs. They created a new
flower bed on the Ousebank - Calverton corner, kindly sponsored
by Jean Barrington in memory of her husband. The new Fullers
Slade bed was widened to give an even more spectacular
expanse of colourful flowers and shrubs.
Mary Robinson and Robin Nichol along with sponsor in kind,
Dominic Harris, extended the path across the end of the wildlife
pond at the North end of the High Street. Children can now enjoy
exploring wildlife.
TIDY LAWN, GORGEOUS
GARDEN
Tidying your lawn is the first step
to a beautiful garden. From the
end of March and throughout April
you can re-seed or re-turf your
lawn. It’ll need a good feed, weeds
controlled and moss killed. You
should also get the mower out! If
caring for your lawn is too much
consider replacing it with artificial
turf – no mud, mess or mowing!
WOLVERTON & GREENLEYS IN BLOOM
The Wolverton and Greenleys in Bloom team are
preparing for the new season, as spring bulbs burst
through and the colourful winter pansies finish.
The judges will be impressed with this year’s colourful
blooms of white, shocking pink, mauve and lilac
hanging in their baskets from lamp-posts and in the planters on
the ground. After last year’s successful black dustbin trial, more will
replace the old wooden planters.
Work is planned on the Croft entrances, Greenleys Community
Garden, the raised beds in Oxford and Bedford Streets. Ongoing care
is required for the War Memorial bed and the entrance to Wolverton
Cemetry. The bedding plants will arrive in May, bringing more tasks.
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Calling on Wolverton and Greenleys residents - YOUR HELP is
needed to keep the area looking beautiful in bloom. Retired,
working, a keen gardener or a complete novice, join in once a week
or give a couple of hours now and then. Visit The Town Council
office where staff will pass on your details.
Vegetable of
the Edition
Leeks
Ancient Egyptians grew leeks and
along with a delicious flavour they
offer huge health benefits. Studies
show they contain vitamins A, B6, K
and manganese that help with your
eyes, immune system and bones.
They also reduce risk of heart disease,
strokes and cancer and support to
the cardiovascular system.
Easy to grow
1. Sew leek seeds in a sunny
sheltered spot during March-April.
Even amongst your shrubs!
2. Sew thinly in soil - 30cm apart, in a
shallow 1cm groove.
3. When the seedlings are 4-5 weeks
old with at least 3 leaves, thin to one
plant every 15cm (plant in other
places).
4. Water well until they are ready for
harvest in summer onwards.
Treat your Lawn
Spring is the season to begin preparing your garden
and lawn for summer. Do it right and you’ll have a
gorgeous green space to be proud of.
Effective Fertilising and Weed Control
The GreenThumb NutraGreen Spring treatment
provides your lawn with a great start to the season.
It’s a controlled-release fertiliser that delivers the
essential nutrients into your lawn slowly and
consistently. It lasts for up to 10 weeks, uses no-scorch
technology and makes the grass plants grow stronger
and more robust as well as boosting the vibrant green
colour. The nutrients are released when moisture such
as early morning dew and rain makes contact with the
special polymer coating These fertilisers have been
developed from over 30 years experience on lawn
treatments and are unique to GreenThumb so you
won’t find them anywhere else.
The GreenThumb Spring Treatment also includes
a targeted weed-control herbicide spray. When
troublesome weeds infest the lawn your turf will have
to compete for sunlight, water, air and nutrients. A
weed-ridden lawn never looks as good. However, the
result of the NutraGreen duo is a beautiful, green and
healthy lawn, free from weeds.
Essential Moisture
GreenThumb's Oasis Treatment is designed to
effectively conserve water by increasing absorption of
any available moisture, from rain or watering. Grass is
93% water and will die if it hasn't been able to absorb
any, so give your lawn a drink early in the morning
or late in the evening. Remember, a yellow and dry
appearance in hotter drier weather is a sign that it
may be lacking moisture.
Routine Mowing
GreenThumb advise to mow once a week on a dry day
to a height of about 25mm (one inch). Cut the lawn
too short and it’ll weaken, attracting unwanted weeds
and moss. Keep your mower blades sharp, or replace
them if necessary, to avoid damaging the grass
plant. Consistent mowing helps to train the grass
to be stronger over time. GreenThumb's SlowMow
Treatment reduces the vertical growth of grass yet
increases lateral growth and improves the density of
the lawn. This reduces the amount of lawn mowing
and a thicker lawn discourages weeds.
Perfect Lawn
Home & Garden
GreenThumb are experts in advising when a lawn
needs treatment or when to begin again. For a
perfect green space Green Thumb’s Lawn Makeover
programme will create a luxurious lawn that is
superior to re-turfing. It’s a fraction of the cost, time
and inconvenience and unlike laid turf, a Lawn
Makeover is grown within the lawn's environment. The
system uses GreenThumb's bespoke ‘Diamond Green'
grass seed with 100% organic, weed-free, recycled
top-dressing.
GreenThumb treatments are tailored with the
greatest care for the UK's lawns. They have solutions
to transform any piece of grass, whatever the size or
condition into a healthy, fresh and beautiful lawn.
Stop the Thief
Over the last few months news
reports have highlighted the
risks of stealing keyless cars.
Thieves have used technology
to bypass entry systems on
these cars for many years, but
manufacturers continue to
develop keyless cars. Although
most cars are affected Which?
highlighted Ford, Volkswagen
and Nissan models at most risk.
While the Society of Motor
Manufacturers and Traders
believe new cars are more
secure than ever, cheap
electronic technology used to
steal cars can be bought on line.
The fob just needs to be within
a certain distance of the car for
the thief to trick, unlock and start
the car. It can take less than 60
seconds and for safety reasons
the car won’t cut out when the
key is out of range.
Take action
• Lock the car and keep your keys
away from door and windows.
• Keep the key in a metal tin to
block signals
• Find out if you can switch the
key’s signal off.
