Children

Celebrating Talented

Young Artists

Congratulations to all our very worthy drawing

competition winners and to everyone who took

part. You all created an amazing exhibition for

Stony Stratford Library.

Hermione

Hermione took her inspiration from York House

in Stony Stratford, as it is a big part of their yearly

Christmas celebrations. Every year, she and her

family create a lantern and join the colourful

procession. Hermione loves colourful and

patterned artwork but next year she is going to try

watercolour painting. She’ll also be creating some

exciting glasswork courtesy Vitreus Art, Wakefield

Country Courtyard – a fantastic first place prize!

Bea

Bea took her inspiration to draw this beautiful

picture from one of the houses on the other side of

the road. She saw a Father Christmas decoration on

a sleigh with a reindeer on a pole attached to the

chimney. Her plan was to make it real and she has

done just that! You won’t be surprised to learn that

looking at Bea’s picture she loves colouring. She

also loves looking at pop art.

Ellie

Ellie has put lots of imagination into her picture.

Her inspiration came from Alice in Wonderland

and she began with her maze and a man painting

snowflakes blue. Ellie is a ballet dancer, so, she

decided to include a juggling ballerina. Of course,

the husky, reindeer and rabbits made it feel even

more Christmassy than ever. As you can tell Ellie

loves drawing and next year she plans to practice

word art.

Lucas

Lucas has produced lots of pictures for the

competition and they are incredibly detailed. The

ideas come from his love of maps, architecture

and places he has visited. This year’s picture is an

elf village and elf workhouses within it. He loves

black and white drawings and is adding to a big

town picture which is currently 13 A4 sheets with

6 made-up villages and 2 towns. We see a future

architect or designer!

THANK

YOU TO

EVERYONE

Thank you to our kind supporters:

RSPCA Milton Keynes and North Bucks would

love to hear from you if you think you can lend a

helping hand.

You’ll meet lots of people, be a valued member of a

team and learn new skills. You can dedicate as little or

as much time as you like, all that is asked is that you

are reliable.

Roles:

Feature

Volunteer for the RSPCA in 2020

Cat, Kitten and Small Mammal Fostering - The

branch takes in hundreds of unwanted animals every

year. If you have spare room and would like to help,

RSPCA will provide everything that is needed. In

return you’d care for the gorgeous fur babies until they

are ready to be re-homed.

Charity Shops - There is always plenty to do in the

shops with roles to suit everybody, including sorting

clothes, helping customers and operating the till.

Fundraising - Funds are vital in keeping the animals

safe and cared for. Have fun while helping at

fundraising events.

Chubby round the edges- no weigh to live!!

Our four-legged friends are as prone as us to adding

a few extra pounds over Christmas. The extra treats

and left-overs are too much to resist! Unfortunately,

the additional weight can dramatically increase the

number of health problems that can develop in cats

and dogs and make that all-important exercise painful.

Nicky, vet nurse from the Vet Centre, Maids Moreton,

says, “Many of the dogs that are overweight develop

arthritis at a much earlier age, making walking

uncomfortable and really impacting on their quality

of life. We can manage the pain once they have it

but ideally we would try and avoid getting into this

situation.”

There are many other conditions that overweight pets

are prone to, such as diabetes, respiratory problems

and urinary issues.

Hannah, vet from the Vet Centre, Cherry Lane, says,

“Treats have a very high calorie count (that’s why

they’re so tasty!) and are one of the main culprits for

causing weight gain. It is so hard to resist those big

eyes pleading for a treat! A good solution is to either

use low-fat treats or to measure out all their food

for the day in the morning, and from that take a few

biscuits to use as treats. They still get the reward of

having a treat but none of the extra calories.”

The other great way to help shed a few pounds

is to increase exercise levels. For dogs this means

longer walks and retrieving. It can be a bit more

challenging for cats but playing games with them

can help - Good luck and good health for all in for

2020!

SENSITIVE TEETH

Reacting to the cold - heat - sugar - acid - drinks?

When are teeth most likely to be sensitive?

Da Vinci Dental Centre say you are most likely to feel the sensitivity when drinking or

eating something cold, from cold air catching your teeth, and sometimes with hot foods

or drinks. Some people have sensitivity when they have sweet or acidic food and drinks.

Sensitised or diseased?

If the pain fades away quickly then we’re most likely talking about a sensitive

tooth. In cases where the pain persists for minutes or even longer after

the irritant cause is gone, there is a higher chance that we’re

dealing with a more seriously diseased tooth. In this case we

would advise you to see your dentist as soon as possible.

What treatments can the dentist offer?

During an examination the dental team will talk to

you about your symptoms. They will look at your

teeth to find out what is causing the sensitivity

and to find the best way of treating it.

How can I prevent sensitive teeth?

Da Vinci Dental Centre advises you

brush your teeth last thing at night

and in the morning with fluoride

toothpaste. Use small, circular

movements with a soft-to

medium-brush and avoid

brushing side to side.

Meet the Da Vinci Dental Centre team

of understanding practitioners who strongly believe

that dental treatment should be PAIN-FREE!

New Year, New Outlook

Forbes report that less than 25% of people stay committed to their

New Year’s Resolutions after a month and only 8% of people achieve

them. Set meaningful, measurable, realistic and achievable goals and

work with the right tools and people to achieve your dream.

PREVENT BURN OUT

Look at your diary and work out how much

time you have to realistically and feasibly to

achieve your goal. And, if time is an issue,

adjust if necessary, don’t risk injury or upset

or give up. There is a way.

TOP TIP

Beat the lack

of motivation by

getting on and

doing it, you’ll

feel great later!

FIND YOUR FOCUS

Whatever you’re dreaming to achieve - sport,

weight loss, art classes or life in general - meet

regularly with a personal trainer or coach

who will keep you on track. Routines and

confidence in what you are doing make it

easier to keep going. These days personal

trainers and coaches for sports or life issues

aren’t just for those at the top of their game.

DON’T JUMP ON

THE BANDWAGON

Just because all your

mates have agreed to

sign up to the charity

mountain climb, don’t

follow suit if it’s not your

thing. Your goal has to

be for you, there are lots

of other ways to raise

money or feel good.

GIVE YOURSELF A TREAT

Don’t let achieving your goal become your life.

The occasional treat – new hair style, gorgeous

nails, beauty treatment or delicious meal are all

essential.

HOW TO CHOOSE A COACH

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

If in the first week of exercise

you can’t walk – you’ve

possibly overdone it. Work

with a gym or trainer to get

the right plan and build up

gradually. Make sure you

stretch enough and get aches

and pains checked out with a

physio or sports therapist. Use

Pilates or Yoga as a core session

to stretch and build strength.

TOP TIP

Join a Pilates or

Yoga class - reduce

the risk of not

stretching & muscle

building.

Qualifications & accreditation - check qualifications and accreditations are

valid, correct for your goal and that the coach follows the guidelines of the

appropriate governing body

Specialism - does their area of expertise fits with your needs?

Improve Your

Well-being

Make 2020 the year that you

maximise your potential.

Change the way you think - find

fulfilment rather than searching

for happiness. You’ll begin get a

sense of purpose and take control

of your life.

1. Begin by nurturing positive

relationships in your life – connect

with mutually supportive and

encouraging people. It’s not about

loads of friends but about important

ones.

2. Don’t just look for success at work,

put value into your relationships as

well.

3. Choose an active lifestyle for

fewer health problems, prevention

of cognitive decline and positive

mental wellbeing.

4. Pay attention to your

surroundings, engage, reflect and

think about how you feel. A better

understanding of your reactions will

help you to take control.

5. Take every opportunity to learn

and be curious. Education gained

from experiences, learning new skills

formally or informally and social

contact are invaluable.

6. Take part in regular acts of

kindness - volunteering, giving up

a seat or being kind to a neighbour

for purely altruistic reasons.

Testimonials, references & practice - who do they generally work with?

Speak to clients. Is it an online contact or do you get to see the coach? If so,

how often? Face to face meetings often work better

Insurance - ask for a copy of their valid and up-to-date insurance

What are their charges and terms & conditions? - if you need to cancel,

what is the lead-time / cancellation charges?

The Relief of Salt Therapy

Salt has been used for medicinal purposes like gargles

or skin scrubs for years because of it’s a natural

disinfectant and antibacterial properties. Salt therapy

or halotherapy is less well understood but disperses

small particles of salt into the air that people breathe

in.

Polish salt miners rarely had lung problems and

doctors saw improvements in 2nd World War patients

who hid in salt caves. Now, Dr Norman Edelman,

Senior Scientific Advisor to the American Lung

Association believes it could be more than a placebo.

It could be that salt particles kill off micro-organisms

in the lung or that the salt reduces inflammation

and decreases mucus. Others believe that inhaled

salt particles draw water into the airways to thin out

mucus making coughs more productive and less

stressful.

Salt Clinic MK was a last resort for local woman Cynthia

T, but she now wishes she’d found it sooner. Months of

a gut-wrenching cough and numerous hospital visits

left Cynthia desperate. She booked three treatments

a week, before

reducing to twice.

She doesn’t know

how it worked

but each week of

treatment lead to a

steady improvement.

Now, she attends

once or twice a

week to help reduce her catarrh and a sore throat (a

reaction to medication). It might not be a full cure,

but the relief along with the relaxing sessions make a

huge difference to her life and wellbeing. Cynthia now

recommends salt therapy to everyone.

than any other month of the year. Gravy waste alone could fill an Olympic size

swimming pool. Domestic households account for a large proportion of that

and they’re are a huge contributor to climate change. Make 2020 the year to

reduce your food waste and save some money.

AVOID DON’T JUSTIFY

While most of us believe we have minimal food

waste, the reality is we avoid or justify the true

extent of what we bin. We’re happier to pay higher

food prices to reduce our plastic use but are less

likely to take action to reduce our food waste.

TOP TIP

Household food

waste makes up around

70% of UK post-farmgate

total. Cut waste,

save ~ £800

(WRAP)

Fantastic composting services can support our

wasteful behaviour – as you drop the apple in the

recycling, guilt is removed! Saving left-overs in the

fridge - suddenly it’s too late to use them. Impulse

purchases or irresistible special offers result in

rotting fruit at home - the supermarket’s fault, of

course! Best Before and Use By dates confuse and

the mountains of waste increase further.

TAKE ACTION

1. Plan your meals

2. Buy local - Vegetable box schemes like Moorgate

Farm give fresher produce and you buy a set

quantity, without extras and with

less packaging.

Direct from the farm means better

quality, more ethical, tastier food

with fewer miles and more thought

about how much to buy.

Food share items you won’t use or

pick up what you will use with the

Community Fridge, Bath House,

Wolverton. Save it from going to

landfill.

3. Buy frozen or freeze upon purchase

TOP TIP

Transform vegetable and

meat leftovers into tasty and

nutritious soups. A one pot

wonder that’s easy to create

and a perfect winter meal

with a slice of thick

chunky bread.

HIDDEN GEM

This hidden gem offers the perfect solution to a proper English

breakfast. It’s Cranley Barn Farm’s sausages, bacon and black

pudding. The delicious sausages cook evenly (not too much fat),

the bacon doesn’t shrink (no added water) and the black pudding

is totally yummy! Those that matter say: “These are delicious

sausages, and you only need one slice of bacon.” Mary and Tom

Edmondson, regenerative farmers, create naturally good produce.

To try their foods go to the farm shop on Fridays and Saturdays:

BUCKS STAR BEER DELICIOUS,

ETHICAL AND PURE

Few microbreweries can boast the ethical

pedigree that Bucks Star Beer brings to its

delicious range of flavoursome real ales.

Since its launch in 2013, brothers Datis and

Daria Gol have used traditional artisan brewing

methods and the best organic ingredients to

produce their beer. The process ensures the

minerals, vitamins and probiotic qualities are

maintained. In addition, the beer is also suitable

for vegetarians and vegans.

A key ingredient contributing to the success

is their aim to minimise the impact on the

environment – they don’t use chemicals and

have almost zero waste. It’s, also, possibly the first

solar-powered microbrewery.

Through their Growler Swap Scheme you can

purchase a 1 or 2 litre Growler vessel filled with

beer, then once consumed, swap it for a new

one with a different flavour. If you keep the beer cool

with the cap on, it will stay fresh for about three months

meaning you won’t have to drink it all at once.

Book onto one of their beer tasting events to learn about

the ups and downs of their journey, the innovative

developments as well as enjoying a variety of beers from

the range. For local, ethical production with minimal waste

there are few beers that could challenge Bucks Star.

Reasons to Enjoy An ARTea

Afternoon Tea

Like fish and chips, afternoon

tea is a quintessentially British

tradition. It’s not an everyday

indulgence but there are

many reasons why you should

partake more often!

1. Tradition – Choose it

because it’s a truly British

tradition, with its pot of tea

and more elegant morsels

than you know you should eat.

2. Special Occasions – a

birthday celebration, bridal party or baby shower it’s

your excuse to enjoy civilised, daytime chatter with

friends.

3. Make a Difference – forget mugs of tea and prepackaged

sandwiches, find the sophisticated you. Sip

from a bone china cup and nibble on finger foods.

4. Breaks the Routine – when you need to escape from

daily activities, relax with your

afternoon tea, you can’t rush it.

5. Because You Can – it’s simple, enjoy pure

indulgence every now and again!

ARTea Room is set in a delightful, vintage-styled barn

conversion. It offers comfortable seating for parties

of 2 guests up to 18, in private or in the main seating

areas.

You’ll enjoy a generous selection of sandwiches, mini

cakes, scones with clotted cream and jam along with

fresh fruit and tea. The luxury option, with a glass of

sparkling wine, adds decadence that’ll make your

afternoon tea an extra memorable experience.

What a great way to start the New Year with our

young writers because getting motivated and staying

motivated can be so hard at any age. The pressures of

exam expectations and learning these days make it

harder than ever for young people. I love the quotes

Anne Frank ones. Take note everyone out there – you

Overcome difficulties

We have found some way to help you find

motivation when you are struggling:

1. To get motivated you might want to have a 5-10

minute break just to relax.

2. You could write self-motivational notes and stick

them somewhere where you will see them.

3. Give yourself a reward to work towards. Once you

have finished you will be happy to get your reward.

4. If you have loads of work to do break it up and work

on the most easy things to do then get down to the

hard ones.

5. Make it fun like adding music or having a bit of a

dance while doing it.

6. Look at some people that needed motivation and try

doing what they did.

7. Believe in yourself.

8. Every time things get hard say, "I can do it," to get

back on track.

9. If you are stressed and cannot find your motivation,

do some mindfullness colouring to reset your brain.

10. Do some exercise. It will give you energy and help

you feel awake and ready to go.

By Kabri

We asked some of our lovely teachers in school

what motivates them and this is what they had to

say:

"I stay motivated because I am goal-orientated." Miss. M

"I stay motived because I like to achieve something

afterwards." Miss. P

"I stay motivated because my friends and family are

always encouraging me." Miss. W

"I stay motivated because of the sense of achievement

afterwards." Miss. T

"I stay motivated by smiles on people's faces." Mr. D

"I stay motivated by seeing other people achieve."

Miss. L

Your motivation can motivate others. Keep trying.

Janes’ Winning

Combination

Jane Hammonds, was overweight for 20 years before deciding

to turn her life around in 2014 and join Slimming World.

She is happier, healthier and more confident than ever and

has enjoyed every moment of her weight loss. Reducing from

a size 24/26 to a svelt 8/10 dress size after losing an incredible

11st 3.5lbs means more pleasurable shopping. Breathlessness

is a thing of the past, and she’s even completed 2 marathons!

She now buys clothes she wants to wear rather than settling

for those that fit.

Because she didn’t feel like she was dieting or depriving

herself, she’s decided to inspire others to experience the

benefits. It’s the support and encouragement that helps

to change the way you eat and think about food not just

reducing calories and smaller portions.

The biggest challenge was booking her first meeting, yet,

she soon realised that size doesn’t matter. Last year she was

awarded the Slimming World ‘Club 50’ Award, celebrating the

company’s 50th birthday and members who have lost 50% of

their starting weight.

Since taking on her first groups, she’s shared Slimming World

Suzanne is now looking for volunteers to

spare a few hours a week to give support,

• regularly visit and help on the ward

• find relevant services to help the person

• treat the person as an individual by talking

about everyday things.

Staying in

Control

When your business gets too much:

1. Start each day with a list of jobs, do

them in priority order.

Follow the 80 / 20 rule, 20% of your

tasks are going to have 80% impact,

prioritise the ones which will have the

most significant impact.

2. Identify your distractions and learn to

avoid them. Turn off social media, don’t

look at emails or messages or answer

the phone until you need to.

3. Take breaks away from your desk to re-energise, if you work from

home, don’t be tempted to put the laundry on!

4. Use time saving tools, alerts/reminder systems and a diary. Block out

time to do the essential jobs.

5. Set your business goals to get direction – think about where you

want to be in 5 years’ time. Make your goals SMART and work out what/

who can help you to get there.

One Hat too

Many

Are you spreading yourself too

thinly by wearing too many different

hats – finance, HR, marketing and

more? Few small business owners

can claim to be experts in all areas,

so know when it is time to hand

over particular jobs. A book-keeper

will keep your accounts up-to-date,

a graphic designer will ensure your

image looks more professional,

think about which jobs you can

out-source and do it. Sometimes

the investment saves you time, your

mental well-being as well as money.

No to Mate’s Rates

As a small business owner, are your friends

guilty of asking for ‘mates’ rates? This is

your time and skill so charge for advice or

physical labour! It’s hard to say no but mutual

respect is an important ingredient of business

transactions. Would they give you something

for free? Next time a mate asks for special rates:

1. Don’t feel obliged - you don’t have to give

a discount, tell your mate your prices are fair

2. Quote fairly - give a quote based on your normal

charges, they have a choice as to whether to use

your services or not.

3. If all else fails - if they don’t get the dilemma

they are putting you in, don’t feel afraid to say, “Sorry

mate, I’m too busy at the moment!”

A friend in need can be helped but to all the mates

out there - most small businesses run on tight

margins and with low profit.

What’s Your Retirement Target?

A recent survey by Which has

uncovered how much you need

to save for retirement in order to

afford the lifestyle you want.

The survey asked current

retirees about their spending

habits and the data was collated

into three different spending

profiles.

These are:

• Spending required for an essential lifestyle (the bare minimum)

• Spending required for a comfortable lifestyle

• Spending required for a luxurious lifestyle

The data shows that it will cost a retired single person living a ‘comfortable

lifestyle’ £20,000 per year and a couple, £27,000 per year. If we assume a

couple both have full government State Pensions when they retire then

they could be halfway towards the £27,000 target income already.

In order to top up their income to the £27,000 target they will need a

pension/savings pot of £215,000 from which it is then assumed they

will draw down on. It will depend on how much you already have saved

and when you start any additional monthly savings as to how much you

actually have to save per month to achieve this size of pot.

If you already have £100,000 saved then for a 40 year old you may only

need to save a further £170 per month up until retirement age 65. But if

you have no savings then the monthly saving will need to be £489.

Now there are a number of assumptions that have gone into these

figures. The point here is that when saving and investing for retirement

it’skey that you have a goal or target in mind. It’s better to know where

you standnow so you still have the time to do something about it.

Knowing the target means you can decide how much you need to save and how

much risk you need to take.

If the monthly savings required are too much for you then you have three

options:

• Change the level of risk of your investments to try and get a better return.

• Change your retirement date so you perhaps work longer or

• Change your target

Risk warning: Stock market linked investments and

any income from them, can fall as well as rise and are

not guaranteed. Any figures quoted are for illustrative

purposes and should not be taken as a forecast or

guarantee. Past performance should not be seen as an

indication of future returns and clients may get back

less than they have invested.

Once you have your plan it’s a good idea to record this and monitor the progress at

least once a year. Better still, discuss your plans with a trusted friend or a Financial Adviser who will keep you on

track.

Don’t be discouraged if your target feels out of reach. Plans will always need to change as life has a way of

throwing up obstacles you can’t yet foresee. But by making use of the various allowances, tax reliefs and

investment powers available to you, you can achieve the retirement you desire.

How much do you

“Trust” your partner?

Jennifer Duckett, Private Client Solicitor at Neves

Solicitors, talks about setting up a Declaration of Trust.

There are reportedly around 3.3 million cohabiting

unmarried couples in England and Wales at the

moment. Up until recently, the law has significantly

favoured the traditional married couple in terms of

inheritance, property and pension rights. Nevertheless,

following a Supreme Court ruling in June 2018, civil

partnerships have now been extended to mixed-sex

couples meaning that should a mixed-sex couple

choose to enter into a civil partnership, greater legal

protection is available to them.

This article is not to encourage any snap decision

weddings or civil partnerships, but only to give advice

on the courses of action that may be beneficial for any

co-habiting couples who choose not to marry or enter

into a civil partnership, and who own property in joint

names.

Supposing you contributed 80% of the purchase price

towards a property but it is held in both your name

and your partner’s name. There is a legal presumption

that the property is owned in equal shares, meaning

that if the property is sold and a dispute arises, the sale

proceeds would be split equally. To avoid this unfair

consequence, I would suggest instructing a solicitor

to draw up a declaration of trust. A declaration of trust

is a legally binding document and would set out the

equitable interest that each owner has in the property.

A declaration of trust will record the differences in both

contributions and state how the net sale proceeds are to

be divided.

An alternative situation many of us find ourselves in is

having to help our children, who are often buying jointly

with partners or friends, onto the property ladder. You

may make a contribution towards the purchase price

and you may wish for this contribution to be protected

for your own child in the event that their relationship

with their partner or friend breaks down. A declaration

of trust can be used to protect your contribution, and

there are also wider considerations to be made in these

circumstances which your solicitor would be able to

discuss with you.

At your side.

I appreciate that discussing a declaration of trust may

not be the most captivating conversation for the

dinner table! But, there can be significant financial risk

in not having one and I would strongly recommend

one for any person purchasing a property whereby

any element of the purchase or ownership is not

absolutely equal.

Leisure

In Bloom Teams Continue to Bloom

Stony Stratford, Wolverton and

Greenleys volunteers remain as

busy as ever over the winter. They

prepare for the following summer

by tidying beds as well as planting

winter flowers, shrubs and trees.

The volunteers work hard and

always appreciate any assistance

or help you can offer.

Fundraising and Sponsors

The Stony Stratford Team

achieved some amazing fundraising

results, with an incredible

£895 raised at the delicious

3-course banquet and raffle at the

Calcutta Brasserie. Jean Morley

from Mill Apartments and friends

organised the raffle hampers, Back

to the Fuchsia donated a fabulous

bouquet and Brittons Nurseries

and Kimberley Salads, Timor Court

Saturday Market gave prizes. They

also managed to raise an amazing

£123.30 from sales of the Stony In

Bloom greetings cards and herbs

and lavender bags grown in their

beds at the Stony Light Switchon.

Wolverton and Greenleys in

Bloom developed some fantastic

relationships with businesses who

kindly sponsored their efforts.

They hope to see a similar level

of support in 2020 with more

sponsorship for their floral bins

and perhaps other activities.

In particular, thanks goes to

Avenues, Axiom b2, Finch &

Sons, Hive Creative, Istanbul

Barbers, Old Bath House, One

Stop Clean, Sapwells, Shotokan

Karate, The Great Western and

the Zouk Lounge. Sainsburys

Argos also sent volunteers to

paint benches and railings, clear

weeds and bushes, and plant. A

special mention to the Urb Farm

volunteers who helped plant

wooden planters on a very damp

day!

Encouraging Green Fingers

Last year W and G in Bloom

worked with Greenleys First

School children to achieve

some great floral results at the

Greenleys Community Gardens.

The children, staff and trainees

from the Childcare Pathways Day

Care Centre (Foundation House)

litter picked at Victoria Park and

considered the impact of rubbish.

They preferred seed-bombing the

area! This year Ron and Eileen Cox

are sponsoring tree planting with

Russell St Primary School and St

Mary and St Giles Junior School.

Wishing Luck

Stony Stratford in Bloom were

honoured to be chosen by the

Thames and Chilterns Region

(which covers Berks, Bucks and

Oxon) to represent the region in

the 2020 National Finals of the

Britain in Bloom competition.

Regional judging takes place in

July, with National Finals judging

in August. We’re certain the

volunteers will be working hard to

make sure the town looks its best!

As always the work of the In Bloom teams around the towns and

villages in the area is achieved through the dedication and hard work

of a few. If you love to see the beautiful floral displays that brighten

Tradesmen Checklist

Work to extend your property can be complicated

and costly. It can be made more difficult if there are

any misunderstandings or if you inadvertently pick an

unscrupulous trader.

This checklist will get you off to a good start when

choosing a tradesman to complete your project.

• Obtain proper name and geographic address of the

trader/business.

• Find out what other people think through trader

feedback, blogs and reviews on-line.

• Ask friends for recommendations.

• Check the listings of membership trade associations,

approved trader schemes and other organisations

to see if they are members. These include Gas Safe,

Trading Standards Buy with Confidence etc

• Check the specific scheme details for the help they

will give to you should you need it.

• If they offer warranties, ask for a copy.

• Give the tradesmen a copy of the specifications you

• Pay a deposit by credit card if you can – this may give

you additional protection for the full value of the job.

Do not pay the full amount up front.

• If you agree a contract with a trader when in your

Using Space with Ingenious Ideas

With smaller homes and space at a premium, a few ingenious ideas for creative use of

space will provide successful storage solutions. Before embarking on any project, clear

your clutter then work out exactly what extra space you need and why. These tips could

help you get your home and life more organised.

BULD IT UP

Built-in wardrobes with shelf dividers, drawers and

hanging space are the perfect solution for your

bedroom. Where space is limited you need imagination.

Children have always loved raised beds with under

desks in their rooms. Now adults and teens can realise

the benefits. Don’t make the bed quite as high off the

ground but just enough to fit bespoke draws and pullout

shelves. They’ll be far sturdier and more useful than

ready-made beds with drawers.

TOP TIP

Go bespoke with a

local joiner to use

every bit of the

space and fit your

needs.

ELEVATE YOUR STORAGE

Stylish hooks and shelves in your bathroom

are perfect for hanging towels and toiletries.

There are options for every style - Scandi,

industrial, country, chic. Add a plant or two

to soften the

look.

Use your

ceilings – gain

strength for

quirky ideas to

hang clothes by

fixing screws to

the joist.

OPEN SHELVING

Shelves bring distinctive design but keep them tidy

if you don’t want it to look like an uncreative mess.

Check weight limits!

USE SPACE WISELY

While opening up stairs gives light and

airiness to a room, it is an invaluable

space for storage, or an extra room of

convenience! Fill the under stair space with

a desk or fill with shelves for your books.

Add doors to hide clutter.

19TH CENTURY IDEAS

WITH A MODERN

TWIST

Ceiling / wall hangers are

ideal for pots, pans and other

kitchen items. Look to local

joiners and metal workers

to create something very

special. Low ceilings? Go wall

to ceiling.

Shelves above doorways are great for storing things you want

to keep but don’t use very often. Just don’t slam the door!

Baskets, stackable boxes, folders and mini drawers work well for

toiletries, stationery and toys. Don’t be afraid to embrace a mix

of styles.

Organise

and Clean

Get organised, to reduce your

stress & waste lesstime hunting

for things! Once organised, call in

professional cleaners to be ready

for the new year.

Cleaning Cupboard

Decant duplicates of the same

products into one bottle. Dispose

of really old ones. Carry cleaning

supplies in a box or bag from

room to room, saves on storage

and products.

Linen and Towels

Keep duvet and sheet sets

together by folding and popping

them inside one pillowcase from

the set. Write the sheet size on the

label to know which bed it is for.

Cluttered Cords

Label your cords and ask an

electrician or cable specialist for

advice on hiding cables.

Bank Your Clothes

Free up space and help local

charities by donating unwanted

clothes to clothing banks / charity

shops.

GET ORGANISED

Don’t spend a fortune on

accessories to organise. Recycled

food jars are excellent storage

pots for stationery. Personalise

them with your own decorative

touch. Drawer dividers make it

easier to find your pens or use a

cutlery tray! Embrace glass and

ceramic jars, different heights,

colours and styles.

Help for Dyslexics

Reaches MK

Nearly 80% of the children with dyslexia

do not receive a diagnosis and even if they

do, support is inadequate and systems fail

them. This lack of provision has a massive

impact on self-esteem and behaviour.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IN MILTON

KEYNES

National reading charity Coram Beanstalk is

searching for volunteers, like you, to help bring the

magic of books to children in primary schools and

early years settings in our area.

The charity will train you to support children aged

3-13, with weekly sessions over one academic

year. They’ll learn to recognise words, develop

confidence and understanding as well as enjoy

sharing books.

Coram Beanstalk programmes are evidence

based and help children with the best possible

encouragement and support. The charity would

love to hear from you if you can help support the

programme.

Last year Coram Beanstalk 3,700 volunteers

supported 13,400 children nationwide. By March

2020 the charity aims to reach 15,000 children

but they still need more reading helpers. Statistics

show that in 2018-19 25% of primary school

leavers in Milton Keynes didn’t achieve the

expected levels in reading.

If you suspect your child has dyslexia,

help is at hand. Northamptonshire and

Buckinghamshire Dyslexia Associations has

extended its reach to help dyslexics living

in Milton Keynes and Buckinghamshire to

achieve their potential.

The self-funding charity relies solely on

membership subscriptions and the work of

its volunteer committee to provide essential

services. Membership subscriptions cover

costs for phone line rental and website

maintenance while limited grants have funded

conferences and other projects.

Even with limited funding they offer

information, advice and guidance to parents,

young people, adults, partners and friends of

dyslexics. They manage a register of specialist

qualified tutors, assessors and screeners, a

parent support group as well as a newsletter.

The small team of expert volunteers offer a

New Year in the Garden

Now in the midst of winter, motivation to work in the garden may not be as

high as usual. However, the effort put in now will pay off in the summer. If it’s

too cold to go out, stick images you’ve found and like in books and magazines

onto a sheet – it’ll bring your ideas for your finished vision together.

TO DIG OR NOT TO DIG

Dig now if you’d like a good outdoor work out -

frost breaks down the soil clods preparing it for

planting.

A SIGN OF SPRING

In a normal cool winter about 20-30 species of

plants flower, yet warmer winters have seen a

greater number of plants flowering earlier. The old

faithfuls include gorgeous snowdrops, hellebores,

some camellia and clematis. Their white flowers

make them a good choice to brighten your

garden. A few easy jobs include trimming back

overgrown climbers and pruning buddleja. Place

a slow release fertiliser around roses and other

flowering shrubs and protect vulnerable plants

from frost with fleece.

TOP TIP

Keep your feet

warm with fleece

or neoprene

lined wellies

The no dig method, however, saves time and

pain, retains moisture, improves soil structure

and encourages helpful organisms – take note

from Cranley Barn Farm. There’ll also be fewer

weeds. Read more: charlesdowding.co.uk

GROW YOUR OWN

Herbs and salad veg like tomatoes

are easy to grow and can be

grown in containers on your

patio, window or in amongst your

flowers. Set seeds in pots indoors

from February onwards.

TAKE CARE OF THE WILDLIFE

Put nuts, seeds, fat balls and keep fresh

water ice-free for the birds – use squirrel

and rat proof feeders. Wild birds cannot

be deliberately disturbed between

1 March – 31 July by law - ask the

professionals if you are planning to prune

your trees. A pile of logs with fallen leaves

creates the perfect home for hedgehogs

- just don’t disturb them!

TOP TIP

Leave fallen

apples out for

birds. Supplement

with extra fruit.

OH RATS!

Rats can spread serious disease and they love a warm, cosy

environment. That includes sheds, greenhouses, composts and

even your house. Tunnels and runs are a sign that they may be

close by!

Veg of the

Edition

Cauliflower – a relative of

the broccoli family that is not a

favourite veg for many. However, it

is unmistakable with its white fluffy

florets. Attractive green, purple and

orange varieties are also in existence.

Cauliflower appeared in England

in about 1720 having originated

from Cyprus. It’s become a versatile

vegetable that’s known as a superfood.

It offers no end of health

benefits including reducing risk of

cancer, heart and brain disorders.

It also helps with indigestion, iron

absorption and weight loss and is

popular for diabetics.

Creative cooking innovations have

resulted in cauliflower being used

as a replacement for flour or rice

in low-carb, gluten-free cooking.

Although possibly easier to purchase

ready-made cauliflower pizza dough

or flour you can make it yourself. Be

warned there is a distinct taste!

Cauliflower is grown from seed every

year. It grows to about half a metre in

height, can take up a lot of space and

it can be notoriously difficult to grow

for a good crop. Conditions need to

be right and it needs plenty of water.

Give cauliflower a chance!

Remove access to water, food and shelter, prevent their access to

bird feeders, scraps on compost heaps, chicken runs or hedgehog

food. Be sure to clear rubbish, keep grass short and reduce

overgrown shrubs. Block access to the space under decks, sheds

and garage and put obstacles in their way.

Rats will eat most harvested vegetables and seeds, store well away

from any access points.

Don’t trust the cat – call in the professionals, like Killem on

01908 510189, for infestations!

Motoring

Greening Up Your Driving

With improvements to electric vehicles

and a greater range of models on offer

from all manufacturers, drivers are

beginning to opt for an EV. The values of

petrol and diesel vehicles are depreciating

while EV are holding theirs.

Drivers who are nervous of making the

switch, need not be as What Car suggests

that an all-electric car is the best option

for nearly one in five drivers. Although a

hybrid or plug-in hybrid remains the best

option for most, the best EVs offer a range of 200 miles from one

charge. The Kia e-Niro reaches nearly 300 miles.

The government is still pushing for electric car chargers to be

installed in new homes. EV drivers can also get support through

the EVHS scheme, Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme. You’ll need

off-street parking suitable for an electric car charger and an eligible

electric vehicle. The scheme offers up to 75% off (maximum of £500)

the cost of buying and installing an electric charger. To qualify for the

grant you will need to check out the rules.

Check out: gov.uk/government/publications/customer-guidanceelectric-vehicle-homecharge-scheme

Also speak to FSG Property Services 01908 639371

Business Leasing Goes Green

Company cars can still offer benefits and not just driving a far nicer

car for less money. However, company car tax and Benefit in Kind

(BiK) scales are now weighted towards those opting for electric

vehicles and those with lower emissions. BiK has reduced to 0% on

electric cars registered before April 2020.

If your business is VAT registered you could possibly claim back

50% VAT on monthly lease payments, unless the car is for personal

use. Depending on emissions, you could also potentially claim the

monthly cost of the lease back against profits.

Talk to your accountant to find out which option is best for you.

Vintage Stony

10.30am - 2pm, 1 January

Market Square, Stony Stratford

Free

Once again, on New Year’s Day expect

to ‘hear’ a cacophony of engines,

as Market Square in Stony Stratford

comes alive with some incredible pre-

1940 cars and bikes.

This must-go-to event draws in

greater numbers and varieties of

spectacular vehicles every year.

Classic British Minis, Rileys, Triumphs,

MGs as well as Rolls Royce sit next to

Vauxhalls, Fiats and the magnificent

Lotus. Caring owners with fascinating

stories to share, have transformed old

rusty shells that are rotten through

into lovingly restored vehicles.

While the event is free donations are

very welcome to help raise funds for

Willen Hospice. Last years’ gathering

contributed £5,875 towards Willen’s

£4.7million yearly running costs.

In total Vintage and Classic Stony

have raised a combined donation of

£60,000. They’d love you to help them

raise even more.

There will more than cars, local

hostelries and eateries will be serving

food and refreshment and shops will

be open.
