ACADEMIC YEAR 2016-‐2017
CIVIC WELFARE TRAINING SERVICE
NSTP may have seemed like nothing but an additional course that was easily taken
for granted. Perhaps, we may have even thought of it as added stress. Maybe it even
crossed our minds that we wouldn't get anything out of NSTP. But in fact, if there is anything
NSTP can teach us it is how to be a more active member of the community.
It is through NSTP that we can put all these values to practice. We can still continue
doing these things through our own ways, but NSTP was definitely the eye-‐opener that we
needed. Because of NSTP, we are now more aware of what exactly is happening to our
country. It is as if we have finally had the opportunity to really step out of our comfort zones
and open our eyes to see how much more we need to do in order for us to truly be
considered as good citizens. The help that we have provided through NSTP is only a chapter
for us. There is still so much more we can do. Let us not allow NSTP to be perhaps the first
and last opportunity for us to extend our help to our fellow countrymen and of course to
our country itself. Let us always practice the values of good citizenship.
Orientation and UNIK Seminar
By Miko Martinez
As part of the standard operating
procedures or protocol of almost any
course, or program, is to provide an
orientation for the students – regarding
what they can expect and what is required
of them. NSTP is no exception to this.
During the first semester, we had our first
meeting and our professor, Ma’am Rona
Repancol, oriented us with how the course
will go by. He told us that for the first
semester, we’ll only have to meet 4 times:
Orientation, UNIKK, DRRM, and our
preliminary exams. These few meetings
will account for our grade in the course.
More so, she told us that we have to form
our groups – and became part of Sam
Vallada’s group. Furthermore, we were
told that we need to donate a hygiene kit
that will be donated to the victims of a
typhoon in Batanes.
At the start of the second
semester, we had our orientation the
second time around – and it emphasized
on our much-‐awaited fieldwork, which was
only revealed on April in Paranaque City.
She also made us pass a school kit as a
group. All of us were excited primarily
because we’ve all been waiting for it – to
clean and help for the public good. Ma’am
Repancol gave us the instructions
especially the ground rules on the dress
code, conduct of behavior inside the bus as
well as on the ground, unfortunately she
was in the other bus with the other section
and another instructor was appointed to
accompany us inside the bus. After which,
she discussed the components of our grade
for the second semester which primarily
focused on our 2 fieldworks, a magazine
output, and kit. We are still waiting for
further instructions and until then, we
made it to the end of our NSTP journey – a
journey that taught us a lot of lessons.

Community Development
and Organizing
By Arthur John Sagcal
Being the individuals who have the
access not just to great education but also to
higher status in life, in general, gives us a
sense of responsibility to help those people
who don’t. But of course, it is not all just
about responsibility the reason that we help.
These activities of helping the less
fortunate and people in need somewhat
gives you satisfaction for you will sleep
knowing that you help someone and you
somehow change the “atmosphere” for the
day and for the problems they face everyday
even if it just brief moment in their lifetime.
After all, you may never know what effect
you gave to that particular person in just a
small act of kindness.
So what really is a Community
Development? What are its aims and
purpose in a community? From the
French comunete, community is a large or
small social unit who have something in
common, be it may in values, beliefs, identity
or religion. Development on the other hand,
is the “gradual unfolding, a fuller working out
of the details, of noted changes or growing
improvement”. It may not be the definite
definition of the term but it is however
revolves around the essence of development
which are change/positive change.
Community development then is the
improvement, growth and change of one
community and its people for the better. Us,
being the fortunate ones and the one who
have access to EDUCATION, have the
responsibility to help them for being a
Thomasian, we are encouraged to help those
in need and being in the University of Santo
Thomas, we must illustrate the Thomasian
values we are highly proud of.

knowledge of the views, beliefs, culture,
etc the people have in the community. In
other words, you have to know them so
you talk to them, talk about their everyday
and life experiences. So In this way, you
just not help the community but also you
connect with them.
Lastly are the phases of community
organizing just to give an outline what
happens when you help a particular
community?
I. Area Site Selection
II. Entry to the Community
III. Community Study
IV. Spotting Potential Leaders
V. Core Group Formation
VI. Community Organization
VII. Mobilization
VIII. Evaluation and Follow Up

Developing a community requires
planning. Creating plans and methods to
achieve the goal of one community and to
create a plan that appropriately addresses
the situation of the contexts. In other
words, these activities are called
Community Organizing. It is a part of the
Community development to truly achieve
the goal of the community by applying the
principles and methods for effecting
change in which the community groups are
helped to identify the common problems
or goals, mobilize resources, and in other
ways develop and implement strategies.
Overall, the experience is such a
pleasure activity to be involved with for it
will leave you something that you will
treasure for the rest of your life. Helping
someone who especially needs it was an
experience you will be proud of and an
experience you can’t compare to others.
Not just you help people but also you have
fun with it.
This is an important aspect of
community development for the people
involved in helping actually need to know
the situations the people who needs
helping are in. It’s all about looking at the
situation in a macroscopic view. But in
addition, these helps you to connect to the
local community that you help for, to
achieve development, it requires

Christian Call and
Thomasian Response
By Robert Louis SM. Sotto
Being a Catholic university,
religion plays a big role in our motivations
in our endeavors, be it helping a whole
community reestablish or establish their
homes or educating the children in a
certain community to help them be the
best they could, even for just a little while.
These activities may seem to be
fleeting for us and, unfortunately, there
are some who don’t take it seriously, but
whatever help we could offer them goes a
long way. After all, there is strength in
numbers and even those joking around
eventually passes on the joy and laughter
to the community.
No matter the degree of
underdevelopment, we could see everyone
exerting great effort into bettering their
situation. But we all know that pure effort
solves only half the battle, they need
supplies and more manpower to produce
more satisfying results, and this is where
the Thomasians come in.
Human dignity is present everywhere,
we could see it in the eyes of those in the
unfortunate communities. We could see in
them the will to live, the will to survive,
and most importantly, hope.
Albeit being in unfavorable
circumstances, they never lose the Filipino
trademark; to smile despite being faced
with seemingly unbeatable odds. Their
faces when they see the bus arriving are all
of pure joy and warmth.
Their endurance is a force to be
reckoned with. They never lose sight of
their goals, and despite countless
misfortunes, they never once doubted
God. There was a time when the NSTP
activity ended in a chapel, there were
many events of thanking and gratitude,
and it ended in a prayer.
Aside from St. Thomas Aquinas, we also
have another saint we revere with a
burning passion: St. Dominic de Guzman.
Thomasian qualities are closely patterned
to the teachings and values of St. Dominic.
These are Fidelity, Study, Prayer, Active
Involvement, and Simplicity and
Evangelical Poverty.
Us Thomasians concern ourselves
with the truth of every situation to better
arm ourselves with knowledge on how to
repair or improve it. We also keep this in
mind as to analyze if what we are actually
doing is for the greater good and for the
benefit of many. Fidelity also enables us to
see through the lies of those who mean us,
or anyone, harm. This gives us our innate

ability to decipher and deduce the hidden
truths or and projected lies of certain
groups.
In addition to Fidelity, we are known to
take our Studies seriously. This not only
makes us more knowledgeable but also
helps us open our minds to countless
possibilities. An open mind is essential in
this day and age when there are countless
groups who don’t share the same views
and beliefs about certain things; and this
often leads to big, overdrawn conflicts
resulting in unnecessary death and
destruction. Studying enlightens us to
different ideas and ideals for our ultimate
goal: to live in a world free of prejudice.
Another benefit of this is the development
of practical skills and the education of
values. This not only enriches our minds,
but enriches our capacity for humanity
altogether.
All these traits are greatly enhanced
with prayer. It is a distinct Thomasian
quality that we remain faithful and Pious at
all times. Prayer offers us a link to the
source of the ultimate good and
knowledge: God. After all, we all owe this
life of ours to God, the creator of
everything in this world in which we are
the stewards. We include prayer in our
every task to gain a sense of higher being
and spiritual guidance and a sense of
divine security. We do all things through
Christ, for Christ.
It is essential that we exhibit Active
Involvement at all times. There are times
when there is a great deal of oppression
and injustice, we must not remain
apathetic to this and assert ourselves to
the betterment of society and the
environment around us.
We are also obliged to
eradicate as much evil as we
can, conscious participation is needed on
our part as the educated people of this
society. Though we are required to involve
ourselves in the movements for the greater
cause, we must take care not to cause any
further harm to others. The way we should
go about it should be peaceful and strong;
reflecting all of our Thomasian qualities.
We must not be part of wild rallies and
uprisings, we must assert our values and
fight only to protect the immediate safety
of all things good.
Simplicity and Evangelical poverty may
be the hardest quality to observe. This
essentially means we must give up all
desires to be closer to God. This will help
us be free from worldly temptations that
hinder us from being the people God wants
us to be. This eliminates the possibilities of
sin if done successfully; this may very well
be the height of faith and good will.
Evangelical poverty for the common folk
may be in the form of basic abstinence and
proper humility. We should not show off
our possessions or let them take control of
our lives. The goal is to be humble when
given a great blessing. If necessary, we
must share these blessings instead of
keeping them to ourselves.
St. Thomas Aquinas’ values are similar
to St. Dominic’s. These values are:
Intelligence, Perseverance and Chastity,
Meekness, Passion and Greatness, and
Truth.
The obvious common trait they share is
the goal for truth. Truth is essential as it
helps us see our goals more clearly, thus
heightening productivity and action.

Perseverance is a quality one must have, whether religious or not. This shows how
strong our spirits are by enduring various tasks and hardships without complaining or
something of the like. It helps us achieve our goals with patience and endurance.
Chastity is another way to stay pure or holy. Some would find this form of abstinence
to be difficult and unnecessary, but the lesson here is to not be ruled by temptation or
acts/objects that give us great pleasure.
Meekness is there to improve our temperament. An angry individual rarely functions
well and is keen to make rash decisions. This prevents us from making a bad situation worse by
lashing out and causing more damage.
Passion and Greatness. All of us should do whatever good deed we do with passion
and full will. This leads to further great deeds.

Role of the Youth in Nation-‐
Building
by Ira Duldulao
In our first module, Role of the Youth
in Nation-‐Building, we were taught how to
become good Filipino citizens. We can be
considered good citizens simply by living in
accordance with the values presented in the
Preamble. These values are Pagkamaka-‐Diyos,
Pagkamaka-‐Tao, Pagkamaka-‐Bayan, and
Pagkamaka-‐Kalikasan. We must always put
God above all else. If we learn to live in faith,
it is not impossible for us to become better
people. For as long as we have faith in God
and follow His teachings, it will be easier for
us to respect human life, we would live in a
world of peace and order, we will learn to
respect and value work and dignity, and we
would not only always think of ourselves,
instead we would have concern for our family
and the future generations. Another value is
Pagkamaka-‐Tao. It is through this value that
we practice love – not just for ourselves but
also for those around us, for
our country. We learn the value of peace,
which I think must be our common goal. We
learn to practice living in honesty and
sincerity. And we also learn the value of
justice, which must be given to every human
person regardless of his or her social status.
Next is Pagkamaka-‐Bayan which includes
unity, equality, respect for law and
government, patriotism, and common good.
The only way for our country to progress is if
we avoid being selfish and instead try to ask
ourselves “How can we serve our country?” In
whatever we do, we must remember that we
should do things that are beneficial for the
many. We should work together to help the
development of our country and its people.
Lastly, we are taught they value of
Pagkamaka-‐Kalikasan. As of today, we need to
be more mindful of our surroundings. We are
the stewards of God's creation, hence, we
should avoid doing things that destroy nature.
To put things simply, the destruction of nature
will lead to our own destruction. We should
take care of nature and preserve the
resources it provides for us.

DRRM
By Miko Martinez
The UST NSTP led a class
reasonable preparing workshop in the St.
Martin de Porres building. It was a thrilling
movement where we can place learning
without hesitation. The workshop gone on
for 5 hours and no time was squandered.
The gathering was educated about the
fundamental life bolster exhibition:
Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Bandaging, One
Rescuer Lift, Two Rescuer Lift and Three
or More Rescuers Carry. What's more,
after the discourse, the gathering did a
down to earth examination
All things considered, there's now
a readiness which our teacher called
attention to. It's not swindling but rather
an arrangement, mindfulness for us to be
sheltered. It might simply be a basic
amusement yet it educated a considerable
measure. What I realized in the course is
that catastrophe may happen at whatever
time it needs so we should be readied and
watchful. There are perils that are the
wellspring of damage and dangers that is
more prominent probability of being
influenced by mischief that we can't keep
away from however limit through
legitimate administration. The place of the
group may have limits like solidarity,
governments' interest and venture like
pumping frameworks for surge to
maintain a strategic distance from
conditions yet at the same time there are
vulnerabilities like surge, fire, quake that
may bring about more noteworthy
circumstances of impact. In this, we have
to make compromises when such
circumstances arise to aid and reduce
fatality.
I discovered that doing mouth to
mouth (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is
not the primary thing in sparing
somebody's life. There are significantly
more to do like analyzing the place first
before moving toward the patient to
secure yourself and attempting to awaken
the patient first and request assistance
from others. These calamities must be
known by everybody to spare an
existence. We ought to at any rate be
mindful. The nation encounter a ton of
calamities that we ought to know so when
come, we know how to get by in the
genuine conditions that we will
involvement.
We have limits yet we can build it
even with basic acts like 3Rs, Reuse,
Reduce, Recycle, and be capable. I feel
remorseful regardless of the possibility
that somebody tosses their own junks all
over. We should be taught and as a piece
of the group, I will be the principal case in
doing the great. These don't simply need
to be gained from a course or some case
planned or in an occasion. We can take in

the catastrophe chance diminishment
administration all alone, by our own will.
Everybody ought to be included.
Everybody must be instructed and
arranged so in later future, we can spare
our life and even somebody's life. So you
can see how DRRM is essential to
Thomasians.

Project Management and
Development
By John Vincent Limos
Project management plans are
hard things to do, but proper
understanding about these would help
every person significantly in his/her daily
life. We have witnessed various types of
projects and activities, wherein we do not
even have a hint on how these were
actually planned. Like the NSTP activities,
these were planned beforehand by our
facilitators.
Activities and plans are simply
prepared for a specific reason and motive.
A sequenced group of plans that are
constituted to perform the tasks is called a
program. We may have this word a lot of
times but we never thought of how
difficult it could be to carry out programs
hosted by schools, government, private
institutions, etc.
Projects initiated by the NSTP
program have specific purposes related
with the betterment of the community.
Every event is carefully planned and
carried out from the day it was first
deliberated to the day it was held.
Alongside the importance of the purpose
of every project is its management.
Management is the planning, organizing,
directing, and controlling of the resources
available. Behind every successful project
is a well-‐managed one.
Beforehand, the managers of the
project should plan it deliberately in order
for them to secure the safety of its
participants and the organizers. This is one
of the many factors that are needed to be
considered for a well-‐planned event. In
creating your own plan, you should follow
the SMART mnemonics. It should be
Specific, Measurable,
Attainable, Realistic, and is Time-‐bound.
You should be specific with your goal and
stick to it until the end of the project. You
should also be able to measure your target
and be sure that your goal is attainable
before carrying out the project. You must
be realistic with the limitations offered by
your variables, like the venue, weather,
funds, and the like. And lastly, it must be
time-‐bound. It should have been
completed within a reasonable timeframe.
These are the things I have learned and am
imparting to you for successful project
management plans!

Determination
By Miko Martinez
Our first year in school passed by
too quickly–in only a squint of an eye, we
made it to the sophomore year. Indeed,
even before turning into a sophomore
understudy, we're now hearing that NSTP
is a bother, ut always looking at the
Brightside and looking forward for life
changing experiences.
For me I think that it is very tiring
for students who do not stay on
dormitories and other circumstances,
which can be factors that gain difficulty to
a student. I'd need to wake up at a young
hour in the morning just to ensure that I'd
make it on time. It was bother. It is a test,
attest that suddenly turned out to be a
piece of my framework.
By and by, I am a promoter of a
better community and the public welfare. I
have confidence in the power of what the
young can offer in building up our nation. It
is NSTP that supplemented the idea that
the young ought to assume a crucial part in
country building. A part that is depended
on us youth as revered in our nation's
constitution. To this end, NSTP has
improved me turn into a native, a superior
child, and a superior Thomasian.
It additionally helped me to
improve as a person whose eyes are open
to the sad reality that the government was
too preoccupied with gaining money that
they forgot about the cleanness and the
welfare of the people, of their people. I
know from the earliest starting point the
estimation of training, yet NSTP has helped
me to try and acknowledge and
comprehend the significance of it – that we
should not underestimate the benefit that
we have. Through NSTP, the struggles
which I have encountered it might tire
however toward the finish of everything, it
was satisfying.
It helped me understand that
there's a tremendous part for each young
there is in our nation. May it be as far as
governmental issues, social, or financial
aspects – we as a whole have a part to
play. This course has shown me past what
is demonstrated in the modules I have
replied. This course has shown me to wind
up noticeably a capable native of our
flourishing nation, of our country – to end
up plainly a subject for others, which is tied
down on the vision of our University.

Furthermore, It sharpened my ability to improve as a Thomasian. It is through NSTP
that I attempt to exemplify the 3Cs of our college: Committed, Compassionate, and
Competent. I understood that having possessed the capacity to show others that we need to
act to epitomizes these standards. To begin with, it may just show up as we're being compelled
to pass requirements or merely clean an area. In any case, inevitably, you'll understand that
you'll have the capacity to relate feel for your fellowmen who lives
near in polluted places. Considerably more, you'll end up plainly dedicated to make life
others easier, even the right to a clean environment. In conclusion, it demonstrated that our
fitness as Thomasians does not need to be constrained inside ourselves – it must be shared.
My NSTP adventure may have begun in an unexpected way – considering it a bother,
yet it will end a mess distinctive. It has shown me that it is so critical to be of administration to
others. It has shown me the estimation of training and the estimation of time. Toward the
day's end, I share the NSTP-‐CWTS' objective that in the end turned out to be a piece of my
standards: “aid and contribute for the good of the whole mankind and benefit of everyone”.

Field Work
By Salma Shay Vallada
According to National
Geographic Channel, field work is the
process of observing and collecting data
about people, cultures, and natural
environments and is conducted in the
wild of our everyday surroundings.
For our first ever field work, we
went to Las Piñas-‐Parañaque Critical
Habitat and Ecotourism Area. We were
assigned to collect a particular kind of
trash. It took a bit of time to fill 2 sacks
of things made of plastic because
mostly they are small. It was tiring too.
But as soon as we finished cleaning up
our area, it was fulfilling.
There are too much garbage in
that place considering that it is a habitat
for some birds. We realized how much
we polluted and are polluting the
water. And it seemed like a lot of
people, mostly kids, take a bath there.
It’s sad that they don’t know how dirty
it is there. We hope that the
government would do something about
the existing problems regarding our
surroundings.
Us students can only be the
start of change and an inspiration for
others. We should make others aware
what a little piece of candy wrapper,
when piled up, could do to our natural
resources.
