Marilyn Braiterman 8 Kamerny Theater, established in 1914, was a pre-Revolutionary experiment and the origin of Russian Expressionism (as opposed to naturalism) in theater arts. The work of its designers represented the major trends of contemporary art: Symbolism, Expressionism, Neo-Primitivism, Cubo-Futurism and Constructivism. One of 1500 copies printed on untrimmed handmade Fabriano blue-gray paper with 79 tipped-in color reproductions. Erté (Romain de Tirtoff) was the Russian-born French artist whose exotic Art Deco designs included work in painting, sculptor, poster art, theatrical costume and fashion. $350 44. Striking color pictorial dust jacket with theater scene on front wrapper and a supper service on the rear. Pictorial endpapers depicting irises. Illustrations by Yoshimune Arai. Text in French of the popular Japanese play with frontispiece of the theater, vignettes, ornaments and full page plates in color. (New York 1964). 8vo, marbled paper-covered boards, printed cover label. Fine in original glassine. One of 500 copies signed by the artist, printed at the Spiral Press on Goyu paper from the original blocks. The text is from an edition printed by S. Hodgson in Newcastle in 1820 with Thomas Bewick wood engravings. Nine fables, each with full page woodcut illustration plus two vignettes, two small signature woodcuts in red and two red tissue guards. $575

An anonymous pattern book with 23 wood-engraved plates of designs for bookcases, a canopied bed, a sportsman’s gun case, and dining room, bedroom and office furniture. An early American example of “Modern Gothic” furniture, expressing progressive design ideas in structure and decoration originating in British art furniture. $2000 49. GIEDION, SIGRIED. Light soil and creasing to back cover of dust jacket. Very good plus. Layout, typography and the dramatic dust jacket (a negative photograph of industrial engineering with overprinted title in red) by Moholy-Nagy. With 127 pages and 139 photographic illustrations in the text, which discusses structural developments from early 19 th century experiments with iron construction to the ferro-concrete building of Perret, Garnier and Le Corbusier. $575 SEE COLOR INSERT 50. A fine tight copy of a book often found with chipped spine. One of 500 copies on handmade wove paper with 17 wood engravings by Robert Gibbings and 15 initial letters designed by Eric Gill and printed in red and blue. Chanticleer 62: “an almost perfectly proportioned book of which the Press is duly proud.” $850 52. (GRANDVILLE, J.-J.) DELORD, TAXILE. Les Fleurs Animées. Paris: Gabriel de Gonet, 1847. Two volumes. 4to, publisher’s green morocco, blocked in blind, spine gilt, moiré endpapers, all edges gilt. Light wear to joints of first volume but a fine set, uncommon in the publisher’s deluxe binding and with the plates and text clean and unfoxed. First edition, second issue with separate pagination of the two parts. Two unsigned plates in the introduction by Alphonse Karr are entitled “Botanique des Dames” and “Horticulture des Dames”. Adorable women are dressed in the leaves and petals of a specified flower or plant and their characteristic personality traits are shown by their pose or in the details of the background with attendant animals. Note on blank preliminary: “This, now rare and curious little work, was presented to my father by the worthy, M. De Boeuf shortly after its publication. P.H. Unusual to find a history of American architecture in French and the emphasis is on French influence as the title suggests.
