Shoppell’s Modern Houses. New York: Co-operative Building<br />

Plan Association (1886-1889). Folio, original olive cloth stamped<br />

in black; inner joints neatly repaired with new cloth and spine<br />

tips strengthened internally. A very good, solid copy.<br />

Collective title page and Parts 1 to 12 and 14 (plus duplicate<br />

of Part 12) of Shoppell’s quarterly of the same name, with<br />

1500 illustrations (according to the title page) and four<br />

chromolithograph frontispieces (one with a family playing tennis<br />

on their front lawn); display advertisements in the back. The<br />

designs are numbered consecutively from 168 to 627; a footnote<br />

on page 5 explains that designs 1 to 167 are now somewhat<br />

antiquated and no longer included in the collection.<br />

Laid in is an 1890 double-sheet circular for subscriptions to the<br />

quarterly with some useful information in sorting out Shoppell’s<br />

“bibliographical jungle”. Hitchcock 1170 passim. $1750<br />

Original Designs for Rural Buildings. Philadelphia: Henry<br />

Carey Baird (copyright 1861). 8vo, original blind-stamped and<br />

gilt-lettered binding rebacked in compatible cloth; inner joints<br />

repaired. Originally issued in 1861 by Henry B. Ashmead,<br />

this is the second edition. Preface and 26 color engravings,<br />

each with descriptive text on facing page. Sixteen designs<br />

and floor plans for Gothic, Italianate and English villas<br />

and cottages, a Gothic church, a western prairie cottage,<br />

conservatory, look-out and summer house. The buildings are<br />

depicted with their landscaping. With 24 page publisher’s<br />

catalogue at the end. An early owner has added an<br />

architectural drawing in ink on blank verso of last plate.<br />

One of the earliest American architectural books illustrated in<br />

chromolithography. Sloan’s scarcest title and very charming.<br />

architect and rural resident and,<br />

the first book of the Press with one (of two) issue points: there<br />
