Shoppell’s Modern Houses. New York: Co-operative Building
Plan Association (1886-1889). Folio, original olive cloth stamped
in black; inner joints neatly repaired with new cloth and spine
tips strengthened internally. A very good, solid copy.
Collective title page and Parts 1 to 12 and 14 (plus duplicate
of Part 12) of Shoppell’s quarterly of the same name, with
1500 illustrations (according to the title page) and four
chromolithograph frontispieces (one with a family playing tennis
on their front lawn); display advertisements in the back. The
designs are numbered consecutively from 168 to 627; a footnote
on page 5 explains that designs 1 to 167 are now somewhat
antiquated and no longer included in the collection.
Laid in is an 1890 double-sheet circular for subscriptions to the
quarterly with some useful information in sorting out Shoppell’s

during the reigns of George IV
and William IV when the nation
was transformed into an industrial giant. Some of the plates
were originally published by an American, William Strickland,
in 1826. Last section of text with a separate title page, A
Scientific, Historical and Commercial Survey of the Harbour
and Port of London by James Elmes, Architect and Civil
Engineer. One of the great illustrated books on engineering,

133. SLOAN, SAMUEL. American Houses: A Variety of
Original Designs for Rural Buildings. Philadelphia: Henry
Carey Baird (copyright 1861). 8vo, original blind-stamped and
gilt-lettered binding rebacked in compatible cloth; inner joints
repaired. Originally issued in 1861 by Henry B. Ashmead,
this is the second edition. Preface and 26 color engravings,
each with descriptive text on facing page. Sixteen designs
and floor plans for Gothic, Italianate and English villas
and cottages, a Gothic church, a western prairie cottage,
conservatory, look-out and summer house. The buildings are
depicted with their landscaping. With 24 page publisher’s
catalogue at the end. An early owner has added an
architectural drawing in ink on blank verso of last plate.
One of the earliest American architectural books illustrated in
chromolithography. Sloan’s scarcest title and very charming.

to elevate the taste of the country

thereby, their virtue and happiness.
