RUSSIAN AVANT-GARDE TYPOGRAPHY
138. TERENT’EV, IGOR. Traktat o sploshnom neprilichii
(Treatise on Total Obscenity). (Tbilisi): 41 Degrees , (1919).
8vo, wrappers. Cover with letterpress typographic design and
15 page letterpress text including typographic designs. Terentev
was a member of the Tiflis 41 Degree triumvirate of radical
typographers. The Treatise
is an essay on literature
and culture employing
experiments in layouts
and typography. For
example, some letters lie
on their sides in a mixture
of Roman and Cyrillic
alphabets; capitalization
conveys stress or
emphasis; typographically
emphasized parts identify
with “taboo” words, and
zigzag and zoom effects
appear.
Terent’ev develops a new theology founded on God’s “fourth
person”: total obscenity. Ex Libris catalogue 6. MoMA, The Russian
