or love between them. Furthermore, wilaayah does not include<br />

intercession, (1) protection, (2) guidance (3) or being a close friend. (4)<br />

By reviewing the Prophetic Traditions we will reach the same<br />

conclusion. (5)<br />

All verses in the Holy Quraan, perceived within their proper contexts<br />

assure that the forbidden wilaayah is confined to the non-Muslims who<br />

are hostile to <strong>Islam</strong> or Muslims because of their religion. Furthermore,<br />

absence of walaa does not mean hatred or hostility. It, also, does not<br />

mean absence of all kinds of love, or cooperation. <strong>Islam</strong> encourages<br />

any effort to build friendly relations between human beings and any<br />

form of legal cooperation to secure mutual interests. <strong>Islam</strong> permits Muslims<br />

to help and to seek help from the others, which include exchanging useful<br />

knowledge and experience as long as it does not negatively affect the destiny<br />

of the Muslims in the eternal life. (6)<br />

Does al-baraa mean hatred and hostility?<br />

The essence of the word al-baraa, and its derivations lies in the<br />

word “separate” i. e. to separate something from another, such as an<br />

accused from accusation, an indebted from his loan, or an invention<br />

or creation from the original form. (7) It could mean to separate a<br />

person from a thing, or a person or a group from another person or a<br />

group. The separation could be a mutual act or a one-sided. (8)<br />

The word al-baraa in the phrase “al-braa from a belief” does not<br />

necessarily impose al-baghdaa (hatred), or al-‘adaawah (hostility)<br />

towards who hold that belief. For Allah specified “albaraa from the<br />

actions” of either party, in the following verse: {And if they deny<br />
