<strong>Controversial</strong> <strong>Questions</strong> <strong>about</strong> <strong>Islam</strong> and Comments<br />

is not hostile to <strong>Islam</strong> or the Muslims, <strong>Islam</strong> encourages Muslims<br />

to deal with him or her kindly. It also encourages them to cooperate<br />

with him or her to achieve mutual benefits and prosperity in the<br />

temporary (worldly) life, provided that this cooperation does not<br />

endanger the Muslims’ fate in the Hereafter. Allah says: {O Mankind,<br />

We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into<br />

nations and tribes that you may know each other (in cooperation<br />

with and competition). Verily, the best of you with Allah is the most<br />

pious.} (1)<br />

This verse emphasizes two facts:<br />

1. Part of the differences between people is a natural disposition<br />

granted by God to stimulate interaction between them and to<br />

facilitate competition. However, the real criterion of success is<br />

achieved by complying with the commands of Allah.<br />

2. Regardless of some differences, including the difference in faith,<br />

there are countless similarities and mutual interests and benefits<br />

to be shared with and co-operate for, in order to secure happiness<br />

for all, at least in this temporary life.<br />

The basic rule of the relationship between Muslims and non-<br />

Muslims is plainly stated in the following verses: {Allah does not<br />

forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against<br />

you on account of religion. Verily Allah loves those who are just and<br />

fair. It is only as regards as those who fought you on account of your<br />

religion and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive<br />

you out that Allah forbid you to take them as guardians…} (2)<br />

In fact, <strong>Islam</strong> distinguishes between: those who are neutral or<br />

supportive to Muslims, though rejects <strong>Islam</strong> for themselves, and<br />

those who take a hostile stand. The home countries of the first type<br />

would be called Dar Silm, (abode of peace) and the other’s countries<br />

would be known as Dar Harb (abode of war).<br />

However, with the establishment of the UN, all member<br />

countries are Dar Silm; This fact does not exclude the occasional<br />
