“We have indeed given you a manifest victory!”
An Invitation to Peace
This is the opening of Surah al-Fath, the Chapter of Victory, and it went
on to declare:
“Truly did God fulfil the vision for His Apostle: you shall enter the
Sacred Mosque, if God wills, in security, heads shaved, hair cut short,
and without fear. And He knew what ye knew not, and so granted
147
(you), besides this, a victory near at hand.”
The Treaty must have seemed a far cry from anyone’s idea of a victory
when these verses were revealed! And yet what came out of it is now a
matter of History: this treaty drawn up between the Messenger of God
and the disbelievers of Makkah literally paved the way to something
unimaginable at the time, the Conquest of Makkah, and with it the fall
of the whole of Arabia to Islam, in just two years time. How could it
have been foreseen that such would result from a treaty of humiliating
terms and an unhappy return home? The believers were indeed able
to make the pilgrimage soon “in security” as Makkah was to become
theirs, and the Treaty did indeed turn out to be “a manifest victory.”
These are some of the predictions laid out in Qur’an. They were put
forward in very clear terms, not like the vague prophecies of
Nostradamus and other fortune tellers. And, as we have seen, they
came to pass just as foretold by the Qur’an.
