Kanke, Ranchi-834006, Jharkhand, INDIA
Birsa Agricultural University was established in the year 1981 with the primary objective of
developing location specific farmer friendly technologies and quality human resources in
agriculture and allied sectors for the economic upliftment of tribal dominated Jharkhand State
of India.
The present compilation provides relevant information about University in the field of
academics, research and extension education programmes. During the last three decades of its
existence, the University has developed excellent infrastructural facilities in different faculties of
Agriculture, Veterinary Sciences & AH, Forestry and College of Biotechnology. This has helped
in research activities which has led to developing several high yielding crop varieties with
improved management practices in Agriculture, improved pigs & goats in veterinary sciences,
agroforestry models and tissue culture plants of several crops.
Now, there has been a shift towards farmer-centric & industry oriented agricultural education
involving agri-entreprenurship development through Experiential Learning, Rural Agricultural
Work Experience, Agri-business management and business planning and development
programmes. Future thrust is on developing a strong research and technology base for sustainable
development of agricultural and allied sectors.
I congratulate all the Deans, Directors, Associate Dean, Registrar and Chairman of the
Departments for providing inputs to make this publication possible. I sincerely hope that
this publication will help in assessing our present strength and draw future programmes for
development.
BAU At A GlAnce
Birsa Agricultural University (BAU) was
established through an act of the legislature of
Govt. of Bihar on 26th June, 1981 after its formal
inauguration by the then Prime Minister of India
Smt. Indira Gandhi which was later adopted
by the Govt. of Jharkhand. The University
was created with great efforts of late Sri Kartik
Oraon, an experienced parliamentarian and
social leader of Chotanagpur region. The
University was named as Birsa Agricultural
University (B.A.U.) in the honour and memory of the outstanding and well known freedom fighter,
Bhagwan Birsa Munda, who rendered remarkable selfless service for the benefit of poor tribal people.
This University was established in the predominantly tribal belt of eastern India with the primary objective
of upliftment of economically backward classes & other inhabitants of Jharkhand through development
and education of the modern practices in the field of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Forestry.
This lone Agricultural University of newly created Jharkhand State is
located at Ranchi-Patratu Road, about 8 KM north of Ranchi, 13 and
20 km from Ranchi Railway Station and Ranchi Airport, respectively.
Its location stands 85°19’ East and 23°17’ North and 625 meter above
mean sea level.
The University has three faculties i.e. Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of
Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry and Faculty of Forestry. Besides,
the University has three Zonal Research Stations created under NARP,
viz., Zonal Research Station (ZRS), Chianki, Daltonganj (Medininagar),
Zonal Research Station, Dumka and Zonal Research Station Darisai (East
Singhbhum) and 16 KVKs spread in 16 districts of the state. Apart from
this a College of Biotechnology has been established in 1997.
BAU has 850 hectare land for seed production farm at Gauriakarma,
Hazaribagh which is the centre for mega seed production programme.
New course programme on Agribusiness Management has been started
in the Centre of Agribusiness Management in the Faculty of Agriculture.
Two new departments namely Department of Aquaculture under
Veterinary faculty and Department of Home Science under Agriculture
faculty has been created where Diploma and certificate programmes
have been started. Soon, the University will have two more Colleges
of Agriculture & Horticulture at Garhwa & Godda and two Research
Institutes i.e. Dairy Technology & Livestock & Fisheries Research.
College of Biotechnology was established in the year 1999. Over the
years, the College has established excellent facilities for research. Tissue
Culture Plant lets Production is a major activity of the College besides
Post Graduate Programme in Biotechnology.
