In the next game S. M. U. got a chance to use some of her ineligibles and
four were injected into the game with Dallas University, who incidentally
had one of the strongest teams in the State. Minus the services of Oecil
Griggs, they put up a masterful game, but they were finally defeated 7 to 0,
Williamson plunging over for a touchdown in the third quarter. Big Jess
Thompson, Red Maxwell, Williamson, Glenn and Barton all played good
ball. The sporting editors are still wondering how it happened.
On November 12th, fourteen unfortunates, engineered by Ooach Morrison,
chaperoned by Manager Kennedy, attended by Garrett, and minus the services
of Oaptain Barton and Mike Oole, who were detained by the faculty for edueational
reasons, left for Brownwood. On this excursion Single-Barrel May
mastered the intricacies of a bcrth and several more (we are mentioning no
names) discovered the most logical way to put out lights. Lack of words prevents
us from adequately describing the game. Visiting cards were produced
and handed over before tackles were made. The only way in which a Daniel
Baker player could be stopped was by running him out of bounds. Garrett
lost eighty-five yards on two plays.
Before the largest crowd of the year, including a delegation from our sister
(?) institution, S. M. U. went down in defeat 21 to 0. But it was an honorable
defeat, and Rix's warriors realized they had met a worthy foe. Time
and time again would S. M. U. advance the ball into Southwestern's territory
only to lose it on do\yns. Glenn fumbled once on the one-yard line, and
Cole fumbled on the eight-yard line. This game was characterized by the allround
defensive work of the S. M. U. eleven.
On Turkey Day, in two feet of mud, and a gale averaging in the vicinity
of forty miles an hour, Trinity and S. 11. U. engaged in a "punting bee,"
Trinity annexing the long end of a 14-0 game. The condition of the field
l'endered end-runs or lIne-bucks almost impossible. The great defensive work
of Thomas featured the game.
On the whole, the team made a creditable showing. Handicapped in every
respect, they developed wonderfully and with the addition of the ineligibles
for the fall of '16 they should make a more creditable showing.
