Golfing It isn’t hard to figure out the most popular sport in Highlands County. With 17 public golf courses and weather that makes it possible to play almost any day of the year, hitting the links is a popular activity locally and an attraction that draws tourists and new residents to the Greater Sebring area. Ten of those courses are in the Sebring area, with two more — Highland Ridge North and South — technically being in Avon Park but sitting closer to downtown Sebring that its neighbor to the north. Sebring’s first golf course was carved out of the pines and oaks just a pitching wedge away from the shores of Lake Jackson. The first nine holes were built along with the Harder Hall hotel back in the 1930s. In the 1950s, those holes were given to the city and are 22 Welcome to Sebring now part of the Sebring Golf Club, known to locals as “the Muni,” when Harder Hall built its 18-hole course across Golfview Road. That course hosts the best amateur female golfers in the world for January’s Harder Hall Women’s Invitational. Sun ’n Lake features two championship length courses, as does Spring Lake, which also has an executive course. The Country Club of Sebring course sits on the edge of Highlands Hammock State Park, and nearby Golf Hammock winds its way through the pines in a unique layout. Most courses have on-site driving ranges and fully stocked pro shops and restaurants. From long to short, challenging to forgiving, historic to modern, Sebring, and the rest of Highlands County has something to offer golfers of all ages.
