May and June have had their ups and downs. We had fun celebrating
National Bowls Day with Turn–about a Triples and lots of fun prizes and
had great weather to host successful District Pairs competition. Unfortunately
poor weather led to the rescheduling of one open tournament
and cancelling of another.
Great things are planned for July - Lawn Summer Nights returns to Leaside
to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis, the East York Challenge will be
held as we do our best to bring the President's Cup home to Leaside,
the Ladies Luncheon and Novice Open Tournaments will take place and
our In-Club Memorial is planned. Of course Sunshine, Monday night
Team Entry league, Tuesday night bowling, Thursday morning Aussie
Pairs and 4-3-2-1 continue.
We have Provincial Champions! Kudos to Lori Brendel and Rachel Jones
who are members of the Ontario Gold Medal Women's Fours team.
They will be competing at the National championships in Victoria in
August. Best of luck to you both!
Good bowling everyone. Enjoy your summer.
See you on the greens.
Your Food Donations
The Community Share Food Bank would like to express
their thanks to all members and friends of the Leaside
Lawn Bowling Club for donations of food to-date.
Without the help from individuals and groups like
yours many who live in this community would not be
able to provide for themselves or families.
Many are in need because of no fault of their own and
the assistance we are able to provide can give them
some help in their day-to-day lives.
The container for food donations will remain at the
Club until the end of the season. For anyone wishing to
give a dollar donation instead a tax receipt will be issued
for amounts of $10.00 or more. See Diane Gore
for a donation form OR you may donate online at communitysharefoodbank.ca.
Greens & Property Report
Shared Parking Lot
The City of Toronto and the Toronto District School
Board (TDSB) held a meeting on June 14, 2017 and invited
the Leaside Lawn Bowling Club to provide input
concerning a plan to re-pave the Leaside High School
parking lot. This parking lot re-paving plan is in the
early stages of consultation and if approved and budgeted,
will occur in summer of 2018. It is expected that
parking space lines will be marked and there will be no
loss of parking spots. The TDSB and City also plan to
use a landscape architect to incorporate a safe bicycle
path within or surrounding the parking lot as well as
bicycle parking racks. It is possible that the TDSB and
City may implement a pass system for use of the parking
spaces with a finite number of passes issued to
LLBC members for use during the school hours. Similar
passes would be issued for LHS students and staff. Further
information will be provided as future meetings
are expected.
Despite the wettest spring we have experienced in a long time and numerous
days of flooding on the greens the playing surface has been pretty good.
We can attribute that to the application of a wetting agent (that improves
water movement through the root zone) and the frequent rolling that we
have done that smooths out any blips on the green.
Next week the city will do solid tine aerifying (which helps improve drainage)
and I have asked if they can put some plugs on our bad bare spots on the
east green.
The university student that we have had for the last two years has found full
summer employment so we have a new high school student, Mathew Dolan,
whose main job will be to do the weeding of our ditches, greens and
grounds. We are still waiting for the city to repair the roof over our front
clubhouse door that leaks badly every time it rains.
We have hired someone to repair the rotting boards on our west equipment
shed doors so that should be completed within the next few weeks.
A big thank you to our gardening committee for the wonderful job they do
each week in making our entranceway so beautiful and welcoming.
Thank you to all the members who came out for our two
members. A special thank you to Gloria Paisley for all her
publicity work and Dennis Sullivan for his art work.
If you encouraged a person(s) to give lawn bowling a try and they joined our club be
sure to fill out a ballot form to possibly win a $50 cash prize. Please ask me for an
Novice Pairs Championship
If you are a lead and doing the centering
of the jack, make certain that
your signals are showing your skip
the direction of movement and the
decreasing distance.
If you are a skip, signal your calls
clearly and encourage your teammates
to help them to bring out
the best in their games.
Leaside is hosting the Ontario Men and Women Novice Pairs
Championships on September 9 and 10.
64 bowlers from across Ontario will compete for the championship.
This is a great opportunity for us to showcase our great club
as well as contribute to our sport.
The event will offer many volunteer opportunities, including
scorers (a person on each rink to mark the score on the
scoreboard), greens equipment helpers, greeters and
kitchen help.
We will serve breakfast snacks, lunch and afternoon snacks
to the bowlers, officials and volunteers each day.
Mark the date on your calendar and please set aside some
time to help us out.
You will also get to watch some really great bowling.
Watch your email, the bulletin boards and future newsletters
for more information.
Special New Volunteer Position at the Novice Pairs
This season, OLBA inaugurated timely reporting of scores at
championships. Results of rounds of a championship show on
olba.ca soon after the completion of each round. If you have a
smartphone, you can be the person who makes this happen
and who helps the 400 or so OLBA members who will check
the website throughout that weekend to see those results.
If you are a vice or lead, be alert for
out-of-play bowls. Go up and off of
the green, stand behind the white
marker and clearly communicate
your signal to the skip.
If you are a vice, bring a towel and a
measuring tape onto the green and
rather than discussing the measurement,
do the measurement.
Here are the particulars:
Be at the club on Saturday, September 9 and/or Sunday,
September 10.
Take a photo of the Official Draw Sheet once it is available
after a round is complete.
Send that photo by email or by text to the person who is
putting the scores onto the website.
That should only take a minute or two.
Be a super-volunteer. Do this task along with another volunteer
job at the Novice Pairs.
A bit more:
There are three rounds on Saturday.
There are three rounds on Sunday.
Make a commitment to be there for as many rounds as
you can. If you can not cover all six rounds, perhaps another
volunteer can cover the ones that you can’t.
Contact Jerry Michaels (communications@leasidebowls.ca)
to get more information and to volunteer and to obtain
the address for sending the photos.
Not many LLBC members use smartphones so we are asking
those who do to try their best to help with this volunteer task.

2017 Open Tournaments - Third Time Lucky!
The first two scheduled open tournaments of the season, Joe
Davis on May 21 st and Mixed Pairs on June 4 th , were cancelled
due to heavy and predicted thunderstorms.
Finally, the first open tournament of the season was held on
June 25th. There was a great turnout for a rescheduled tournament.
Eighteen teams participated from across the GTA, as far
north as Georgina and east as Oshawa including five Leaside
teams. Thunder, lightning and hail created a bit of excitement
at the start of the second game but after a 30 minute delay, the
teams bowled on despite threatening skies and some rain, to finish all three games.
All of the Leaside teams bowled well with two teams winning prize money as third and fourth two game winners.
Players on those teams were Phillip Francis, Ross Monk and Adele Francis and Robert Graham, Jeanette Del Carlo
and Gloria Paisley. The tournament was sponsored by Tim McMartin of Edward Jones.
To everyone who help run the tournament from Suzanne Gourley who served delicious homemade cupcakes and
muffins, and her assistant Cecilia Scott, who ran the kitchen; Jeanette Del Carlo and Carol Burke who did the registrations,
(Carol also helped with the scoring); Mary Louise Matthews( also did Share the Wealth) and her crew who
set up the greens and many others who helped during the day...a BIG Thank You! Your help and support make our
tournaments successful!
If you haven't participated in an open tournament this season by bowling, or volunteering or coming out to watch
exciting games... it is not too late! There are 3 more open tournaments this season:
* Ladies Luncheon, (Pairs) on July 11 th ...bowlers, food donations and volunteers needed.
*Novice Open Triples, on July 30 th ...a great event for Novices (new to tournament bowling).
*Anniversary Mixed Triples, on August 26th th .
Check the Open Tournament Board for signup sheets and the general bulletin board by the locker room for volunteer
opportunities. Please contact me for more information on open tournaments.
I look forward to seeing more Leaside Bowlers at our open tournaments...bowling, volunteering and/or watching!
Gardening Report
We Love Plant Donations.
Thank You to Diane Gore who donated
a lovely apricot rose to our garden.
It’s on the east side of the north
fence.
Silver Lace Vine (Polygonum aubertii)
To all those who told us that they wanted something along the west fence to block the view of the parking lot,
this is your plant.
Silver Lace Vine is a hardy, fast-growing vine that takes only two years to reach its full length of 25 feet. In late
summer and early fall, it produces masses of white, fragrant flowers which last for over a month. It is planted
about half-way up the west fence, protected by some low white fencing.
This is what the Silver Lace Vine looks like now.
This is what it will look like in two years.
