Simcoe Day 2018
CLUBHOUSE
CONNECTION
President’s Message - Lori Brendel
As expected, July was just as busy as the first couple months of the season with the month being kicked-off with our Canada Day
and anniversary celebration. I am sad to say that we did not bring home the trophy for the East York Challenge on July 6 despite
having some very strong teams. That's OK – we will trounce Cosburn next year and bring it home! Also in July, we hosted the
Ladies Luncheon (I think it was one of the best lunches in a long time), the in-club Memorial Tournament and the open Mixed
Pairs Tournament. And let's not forget the ever popular Lawn Summer Nights (LSN).
th
I stopped by on the 19 of July to check out LSN and was amazed at the incredible amount of coordination and volunteer effort
this takes. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers, not only for LSN, but for all the corporate events, the inclub
and open events as well as the day-to-day management of the club. The amount of effort and commitment to our club is
astounding and our active volunteers set an excellent example of what true volunteerism is and what each and every member of
our club should aspire to. Our club is run 100% by volunteers and is one of, if not the premier club in Toronto – and certainly the
only club with a wait list. I would ask each and every member of this club to consider thanking our volunteers instead of
watching them and perhaps lending a helping hand themselves.
August is looking like another busy month with our Simcoe Day celebrations, our Short Mat charity event, the jitney against
Agincourt and Anniversary open tournament, our in-club bowling and championships, as well as one more corporate event for
Cystic Fibrosis. The parking lot should be done soon(ish) which will make the parking much nicer and get rid of the pond
currently in the middle of the
parking lot. All in all, should
shape up to be another great
month of bowling.
On a more personal note, I
want to thank the club for its
support on my journey to the
Canadian Championships. I
have had a few people
practice with me already and
more volunteer to practice
with me and I just wanted to
say how much I appreciate
that. I've got 3 weeks left to
practice in August ... and if
any of you saw my drives, you
know I need every day.
Hoping to make Ontario
proud! Lori
The Kids Are Coming, The Kids Are Coming ...
Children from Thorncliffe Neighborhood Park will be visiting us to bowl
on August 15th @ 1 p.m.
Volunteers will be needed to help the children bowl. So if you’re
missing your grand kids who are away at camp for the summer, this is
your chance to see some young rotters who might give you a lovely
smile or even a hug. We need 8 people.
This is the Charity we support and the reason we have our
Short Mat Tournament on Aug 11, so please consider your contribution,
for both occasions: one in dollars and the other in time..
And, don’t forget ...
Below are some of the guidelines and tips
that were shared and discussed during
the SKIP’s CLINIC on Friday, July 27,
2018 at the club.
To be a good skip you:
· Must be good at making all types of shots - from the draw to the drive and block. And… you should practice
these shots regularly.
· Must to know the rules of the game.
· Must keep your “head in the head” at all times.
· Must be able to evaluate the speed of the green, weaknesses and strengths of your opponents, and strength
of your team and capitalize on your assessments.
· Should know how to build a head on your own terms and force your opponent to make difficult shots.
· Must set the tone for good Sportsmanship; for example, acknowledging a good shot by your own or
opponent's team.
· Should know when to change the shape of the game by moving the mat and forcing the opponents to play
their weak side
· Should know how to communicate clearly to your team. You need to give good clear signals – both in hand
signals and verbal communications.
· Should know how to play the safe shots and avoid giving up a big score.
Tips for the Skips
· Allow leads to draw twice (ie to the jack) before asking them to bowl for position (ie 18 inches behind the jack
or to cover the opponents back bowls). Leads should not be asked to drive unless playing in a pairs game.
· Skips should decide which hand plays best for each of their players and stick with it if possible.
· Build each head safely. If a loss is inevitable, make sure it is a low score. (If you can't be first shot, be second!)
· When holding the shot, bowl for position (behind the jack, the spot, or a block). When down a shot, draw.
· Do not call for position bowls that will give the opponents a chance to wick off or rest on.
· Try to cover all positions that the jack may land if it were moved.
· Know when there are possible shots to make a big score, e.g., by moving the jack.
· Be confident with your drive shot – it is both an offensive and defensive weapon. Use it to move the jack, take
advantage of the re-spot rule, or push a bowl up.
· Blocks are very difficult to make so you need to practice block shots. Also consider throwing the opposite
hand to place the block.
Sponsoring the Ladies Luncheon Tournament
I love giving back to my community and sponsoring the Ladies Luncheon Tournament
is matter of pride for me. I love, also, the hive of activity with so many volunteers
giving freely of their time, not to mention the food. It's so delicious. That is what
impressed me most when I joined the Leaside Lawn Bowling Club, the volunteers I
mean, who make this club a home.
Over the previous 5 years of my sponsorship, I felt I should not compete myself as it
would be rude to win and take the money I had donated for prizes, I mean really,
what do you think? Well, many of you asked why I wasn't bowling in the
tournament? After all, you've bowled with and against me and know that there was
no way I would ever win the tournament, a game in Sunshine maybe, but not a tournament involving top competitors
from other clubs.
But you kept asking me why I wasn't bowling and, this year, Linda Davidson who so ably runs the Ladies Luncheon
Tournament needed an extra competitor. So, with no fear of winning, I decided I would bowl and not knit or help in
the kitchen while everyone else competed on the green. Then someone else dropped out and Mary Lou Richards
joined the fray and guess who was my skip? Well, how do you not win when playing with the awesome Mary Lou
Richards? My expertise with bowls (where's the bias?) kept Mary Lou to the bottom prize of $40, $20 each. But I
want to say that I have given my $20 back to Linda and to the club.
So, look out ladies, with a clear conscience, I'm giving fair warning that I am now in training mode and I will be back
next year with Mary Lou as my skip. Let's see how big a contribution I can make back to the club in 2019!
Have you seen my flyer? So many of you ladies are impressed with the flyer that I hand out at the tournament, I put a
favourite recipe on it. (Food warms the heart, eh?) Last year I used my grandmother's authentic strawberry
th
shortcake, red and white, for Canada's 150. This year for the clubs 65 Anniversary, I made a jellied salad in green and
yellow from my other grandmother's cookbook which was printed in 1953, the same year of birth for Leaside Lawn
Bowling. I left a stack at the club but if you didn't get one, let me know, and I'll happily send it to you. It's a delicious
and tangy accompaniment with pork and turkey, if I say so myself.
Now where's my Grippo? Only eleven months left to train. Margaret Winter
Greens and Property -
Our greens have survived the extreme heat so far this summer. Thanks to Don McCowan for
maintaining our mowers weekly by adjusting the height and reel to bedknife operation and
to Eric Evans for removing the dew on our non-cutting days which helps to reduce disease.
Due to the extreme heat we have not been able to verticut as often as we wanted.
You may have noticed that the green carpeting has been removed from the east shed and
the threshold cemented where the wood was rotting. Thanks to John Adams for doing this.
Our new benches have been installed and really add to the beauty of our little paradise in
Leaside. We are very fortunate to be to enjoy such a lovely space.
Mary Louise Matthews
Enjoy the rest of our summer - it will fly by.
Hello Lawn Bowlers!
Your generosity of 161 pairs of socks, 7 Tim cards and $631.40 in cash for Tim cards and hand warmers has
enabled Dorothy and me to be “... a rainbow in someone else’s cloud”, Maya Angelou.
Merci, Grazie, Gracias, Arigato, Thank You - Whatever the language, your spirit of giving made Toasty
Tootsies happen this winter!
Each sock package will be personally delivered by us to the needy souls of Toronto! They will feel your
kindness on their feet / hands, in their tummies, and in their hearts!
As Dr. Seuss once said, “Unless someone like you cares an awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
You cared: you made a difference!
Until next year, thank you. We are very appreciative and grateful!
