TESTY OLD times in Memorial
Ave our front page article
reveals today.
It’s a neighbours at war situation,
and one which should
never have got as far as it has.
It defies logic that a 76-yearold
should end up in court over
a bitter dispute involving a
shared driveway.
There’s nothing new about
rows over shared driveways
but this one has got way out of
hand.
The police are fairly patient
people, particularly when it
comes to the elderly, so for them
to take it to court underpins
how serious this one is.
And probably making matters
worse is the other party in the
equation – the neighbour who
had his vehicles damaged – has
in the last few days rubbed salt
into a festering wound.
He’s put up a Guilty sign after
the court hearing which faces
the elderly woman’s property.
Not a smart move.
On another note, we have
extensive coverage of the Lions
visit. Go the Crusaders.
THIS WEEK IN CANTERBURY’S PAST
This week in history saw a fire in Colombo St destroy buildings
between Hereford and Cashel Sts on June 4, 1864. On the same
day in 1866 the refurbished Royal Princess Theatre re-opened
as the first Theatre Royal. On June 6, 1905, the first electric
trams began operation. Unique in Australasia, they had front
fenders as a safety feature because of the density of cycle traffic
in Christchurch. On June 7, 1877, the Canterbury College
(University) building was opened. Designed by B. W. Mountfort,
the building is now part of the Arts Centre. On June 8, 1966, the
Wahine, described as the largest vehicular ferry in the world,
began sailing on the Lyttelton-Wellington run. On June 9, 1869,
an earthquake damaged many buildings including the town
hall. On June 9, 1917, the Sign of the Kiwi (right) was opened.
On June 10, 1868, William Wilson was elected the first mayor of
Christchurch.
