New future-focussed health
and wellbeing qualification
Ara Institute of Canterbury’s new
Certificate in Health and Wellbeing
will prepare students for the diverse
environments and roles of the future.
Human Services Manager Deirdre
Richardson says that the Level 4 qualification
will give students a solid foundation for
employment, professional development, or
to progress into a degree.
“Students will learn about the latest factors
that are driving the constantly-evolving
health and wellbeing sector, and develop a
framework of knowledge that they can apply
to different situations,” she says.
Enrolments are now open for the one
year programme, which will commence in
February 2017 at the Institute’s Christchurch
and Timaru campuses. Three specialisations
are available: Social Services, Mental Health
and Addiction Support, and a Community

Facilitation specialisation that could lead
to roles including disability support and
diversional therapy.
The new programme was developed after
extensive consultation with industry and
has a strong work-integrated learning focus.
50 credits are linked to a 200-hour practical
placement in the workforce, overseen by the
expert tutors at Ara.
Students from all specialisations will
complete 70 credits in core courses that will
prepare them to work with a wide range of
people, using up-to-the-minute practices.
Richardson says that the programme
will also provide students with valuable
opportunities to learn from others who
are working in different areas or that
have personal experience in their chosen
specialisation.
“It will encourage students to learn about
roles outside where they undertake
their placement, exposing them
to the broad scope of services and
practices in the industry.”
The programme has been
designed to be as accessible as
possible for students. It will be held
during school hours on just two
days of the week and will follow
the school calendar year. Part-time
study options are available and
Ara has a comprehensive range

The “NZ Certificate in Study and Career
Preparation Level 4” is being launched
in semester 2 to help learners prepare for
higher qualifications.
“If you don’t meet the entry requirements
for a degree or diploma in health or science,
this new qualification is for you,” Elizabeth
Schmidt, Manager of Academic Operations
for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health
says.
“It’s a fantastic solution. You can complete
this qualification in six months, and
then apply to study a degree in nursing,
midwifery, medical imaging, engineering,
architectural studies, business or applied
science.”
Students can specialise in pre-health,
applied science, medical imaging,
construction and architectural studies,
engineering technology or applied
management.
There is also a six month level 3 option
available across a wide range of programmes,
leading to the level 4 programme or to
further study at diploma level.
