Stay Safe in the Sun By Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk<br />

‘Lobster’ arms. Heat exhaustion.<br />

It seems that despite the<br />

publicity, we’re still not getting<br />

the sun protection message – and<br />

we’re risking serious health issues.<br />

PROTECTING YOUR SKIN<br />

“A tan is actually a sign that the<br />

skin has been damaged and is<br />

trying to protect itself,” warns<br />

the British Association of<br />

Dermatologists (BAD). The brown<br />

colour is caused by melanin,<br />

produced by your body in a<br />

desperate attempt to protect itself<br />

from further UV damage – and UV<br />

damage can lead to skin cancer. In<br />

effect, sunburn is a radiation burn.<br />

This doesn’t mean you should<br />

never go out in the sun. We need<br />

a little sunshine to keep Vitamin D<br />

levels topped up (specifically<br />

outdoor sunshine, as glass blocks<br />

the UVB needed for Vitamin D<br />

production). But it does mean<br />

protecting your skin is important.<br />

This means:<br />

• finding shade when the sun is<br />

strongest (usually 11am - 3pm<br />

from March to October in the<br />

UK);<br />

• covering your skin (remember<br />

that fabrics allow UV light<br />

through to various extents);<br />

• choosing a suitable sunscreen -<br />

and using it properly.<br />

Choosing Sunscreen<br />

Choose sunscreen with both UVA<br />

and UVB protection. ‘UVA’ will be<br />

in a circle logo and is rated up to 5<br />

stars. UVB protection is indicated<br />

by the SPF (sun protection factor).<br />

SPFs range from 2 to 50+; the<br />

higher the number, the higher the<br />

protection.<br />

Look for a cream with at least<br />

four-star UVA protection and at<br />

least 30 SPF.<br />

Using Your Sunscreen<br />

Sun cream is only as effective as its<br />

application, so:<br />

• Apply liberally. “The overall<br />

message in terms of sunscreen<br />

use is ‘more is better’”, says<br />

the BAD. Apply at least two<br />

teaspoons of sunscreen to cover<br />

the head, arms and neck and two<br />

tablespoons to cover the entire<br />

body while wearing a swimming<br />

costume.<br />

• Apply frequently. If you plan to<br />

be in the sun long enough to risk<br />

burning, sunscreen should be<br />

applied 30 minutes before going<br />

out and just before going out.<br />

The BAD recommends reapplying<br />

it at least every two hours<br />

afterwards.<br />

It also needs to be applied again<br />

straight after you’ve been in<br />

water, even if it’s ‘water-resistant’,<br />

as it will have been<br />

compromised by sweating, towel<br />

drying and friction. Remember<br />

too that you’ll feel artificially cool<br />

due to the water on your skin.<br />

• Don’t use expired sunscreen.<br />

Even sunscreen still in date may<br />

be much less effective if it’s been<br />

allowed to get hot or sit in direct<br />

sunlight.<br />

Remember:<br />

• The BAD warns that water can<br />

increase the sun’s radiation by<br />

5%, and sand by 17%.<br />

• The sensitive skin of babies and<br />

children need extra protection.<br />

“Damage caused by repeated<br />

exposure to sunlight could lead<br />

to skin cancer developing in later<br />

life,” warns the NHS. Children<br />

under 6 months should be kept<br />

out of strong sunlight<br />

completely.<br />

• You should take extra care if you<br />

have:<br />

• pale, white or light brown skin;<br />

• freckles or red or fair hair;<br />

• many moles (look out for new<br />

moles, growths or lumps, and<br />

size, shape or colour changes to<br />

existing moles, freckles or<br />

patches of skin);<br />

• skin problems relating to a<br />

medical condition;<br />

• a family history of skin cancer.<br />

• You should also take extra care if<br />

you:<br />

• tend to burn rather than tan;<br />

• are only exposed to intense sun<br />

occasionally (e.g. on holiday);<br />

• are in a hot country with<br />

particularly intense sun.<br />

Treating Sunburn<br />

Cool it down by applying plenty of<br />

cold water, then a soothing<br />

product such as after sun or<br />

calamine lotion. An antiseptic<br />

cream that contains a local<br />

anaesthetic can help, as can basic<br />

painkillers such as paracetamol<br />

and ibuprofen. If you feel unwell or<br />

your skin swells badly or blisters,<br />

seek medical help. Avoid the sun<br />

until all redness has gone.<br />

PROTECTING YOUR EYES<br />

UV light damages eyes too, so<br />

protection is vital.<br />

• As soon as they’re old enough to<br />

understand, teach children never<br />

to look at the sun and how<br />

serious the consequences can be.<br />

• Adults and children should wear<br />

sunglasses, even on cooler sunny<br />

days. Ensure they protect against<br />

both UVA and UVB and choose<br />

sunglasses with wraparound<br />

lenses or wide arms with the CE<br />

Mark and European Standard EN<br />

1836:2005.<br />

HEATSTROKE<br />

Heatstroke starts with heat<br />

exhaustion. Symptoms can<br />

include headache, dizziness and<br />

confusion, appetite loss, feeling<br />

sick, excessive sweating, pale<br />

clammy skin, cramps in the arms,<br />

legs and stomach, fast breathing<br />

or pulse, a temperature of 37C or<br />

above and intense thirst.<br />

If someone is suffering from<br />

heatstroke, you must lie them<br />

down, raise their feet and cool<br />

them down by providing cold<br />

drinks, removing unnecessary<br />

clothing and placing them in the<br />

shade.<br />

Call 999 if the person is no better<br />

after 30 minutes or if they feel hot<br />

and dry, have a temperature of<br />

40C or above, are breathless or<br />

breathing rapidly, are confused,<br />

lose consciousness or have a<br />

seizure.<br />

To avoid heatstroke, stay hydrated,<br />

keep your head covered and rest in<br />

the shade when the sun is hottest.<br />

Preparing for Interview<br />

The golden rule of any job application is to be<br />

offered the job – irrespective of whether it is your<br />

first choice! You can always turn it down.<br />

• 350g plain flour<br />

• 175g butter, chilled and diced<br />

• 2 tbsp caster sugar<br />

• 1 large egg, beaten with 2tbsp<br />

• 6 peaches, halved, stones<br />

removed and thickly sliced<br />

• 2 tbsp caster sugar<br />

• 2 tsp cornflour<br />

• Milk to glaze<br />

• Icing sugar, to dust<br />

Peach Crostata<br />

A crostata is an Italian lattice-topped pie which<br />

can be sweet or savoury. This one has a fruity fresh<br />

peach filling. Serve with crème fraîche or ice cream.<br />

Serves 6 Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes, plus chilling<br />

TIP If you don’t have a pastry lattice roller, cut the rolled out pastry into thin<br />

strips and drape over the filling.<br />

1. To make the pastry, sift the flour into a large bowl. Add the butter and rub<br />

in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir<br />

in the sugar, add the egg and water, then stir with a knife until the mixture<br />

begins to stick together.<br />

2. Gather the dough with one hand, turn out onto a lightly floured surface<br />

and knead for a few seconds until smooth. Flatten into a round, wrap in<br />

cling film and chill for 30 minutes.<br />

3. Preheat the oven to 200C, fan 180C, gas 6. Place a baking sheet in the<br />

oven to heat up.<br />

4. Roll out about two-thirds of the pastry on a lightly floured surface to the<br />

thickness of a one pound coin and use to line a 23cm round pie dish.<br />

5. Toss the peaches in a bowl with the sugar and cornflour then pile into<br />

the pastry case. Roll out the rest of the pastry to a 20cm circle and use a<br />

lattice pastry roller to cut slashes in the pastry (see tip).<br />

6. Brush around the edge of the pastry case with a little water then drape<br />

the pastry circle over the filling, pulling it gently to create the lattice<br />

effect. Press the pastry edges together to seal and trim off any excess<br />

pastry.<br />

7. Glaze the pastry with milk, then place on the hot baking sheet in the oven<br />

and bake for 35-45 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve<br />

warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar.<br />

This is Clyde.<br />

He is a 3 year old guinea pig looking for a home,<br />

along with his new wife Bonnie (ginger female<br />

short haired)<br />

Clyde came into rescue as an unwanted pet. He<br />

had been bought as a child's present and the child<br />

ignored him along with the rest of the family.<br />

His cage became more and more filthy as no one<br />

cleaned him out. In the end the environment he<br />

was living in was so filthy that he had no choice<br />

but to sleep in his own urine and faeces.<br />

When he got to us he was extremely malnourished,<br />

underweight, dehydrated and on death's<br />

door.<br />

I had to feed him every 2 hours throughout the<br />

day and night to keep food going through his<br />

system and to stop him getting a condition called<br />

Gut Stasis which is where the guts stop working.<br />

He was so weak that he could barely hold his<br />

head up and didn't even have the energy to chew<br />

food into pieces to eat.<br />

Clyde is a fighter though and over the next two<br />

weeks he gained strength and very slowly gained<br />

weight and soon enough he was strong enough to<br />

be neutered so that he could be paired.<br />

But we had no girls!<br />

That was until we got a call from a vets in London<br />

who had a 2 year old female guinea pig handed in<br />

by her owner to be euthanised because he had<br />

dropped her and she had fractured her leg. He<br />

didn't want to medicate her with pain killers whilst<br />

it healed and found it easier to have her put to<br />

sleep.<br />

Instead of that she came here to recover and<br />

when her leg had healed, was introduced to<br />

Clyde.<br />

Bonnie & Clyde are now looking for a home.<br />

Currently they live indoors. This is the safest<br />

option as this area has a large fox population.<br />

There is an adoption fee to pay and the new<br />

owners must be prepared to show us the set up<br />

they have.<br />

Safe Journey<br />

Now that the weather is really<br />

summery, everyone is rushing to<br />

their local garden centres, garden<br />

shows and nurseries to stock up on<br />

new plants for the garden. However,<br />

don’t forget to ensure that the<br />

plants you buy have a good chance<br />

of surviving, not only once they get<br />

home, but also during the journey<br />

there; it is worth taking a few very<br />

sensible precautions.<br />

Don’t take something home the<br />

day you buy it if it is too large to<br />

fit in your car. However slowly you<br />

drive, if the plant is sticking out of<br />

a sunroof or window the foliage is<br />

going to be scorched and damaged,<br />

and it is possible that a stem may be<br />

broken. Almost all garden centres<br />

now offer delivery and this is usually<br />

free of charge within a reasonable<br />

radius, so take advantage of this<br />

service.<br />

If the plant does fit in your car then<br />

remember to wrap the root ball in a<br />

black bin liner or a box, to prevent<br />

the back of your car becoming full<br />

of compost, grit etc.<br />

Always use the garden centre<br />

as the last port of call before<br />

travelling home, as in hot weather<br />

temperatures increase quickly in a<br />

closed car, even with the windows<br />

or sunroof open. Under these<br />

conditions the plants can soon be<br />

boiled alive, literally! Plants in the<br />

boot should be safer for a slightly<br />

longer period of time, but you<br />

should travel straight home once<br />

you have made your purchases.<br />

If you are determined to take<br />

something home that protrudes<br />

slightly from your car, then it is<br />

essential that you wrap up anything<br />

which is sticking out really well to<br />

prevent leaf scorch and damage.<br />

Make sure that it is tied down<br />

extremely well so that it can’t blow<br />

off on the way home. Remember<br />

that anything protruding from your<br />

car could potentially cause a driving<br />

hazard to other road users, so be<br />

sensible.<br />

Beware Of Ticks When<br />

Walking Your Dog<br />

Ticks pose a serious health risk to your dog during<br />

the summer and early autumn months, particularly<br />

if you take them for walks through bracken and<br />

heather. If your dog has a long coat, a tick will<br />

barely be noticeable on the skin, so it’s important<br />

that you physically check their body when you finish<br />

your walk.<br />

What does a tick look like?<br />

Ticks are tiny spider-like creatures that attach<br />

themselves to a ‘host,’ and feed on their blood.<br />

Once they start to feed, the tick increases in size<br />

and becomes more noticeable to the<br />

human eye.<br />

Although it’s tempting to pull a tick from<br />

your dog, part of it is likely to remain<br />

under their skin which can have serious<br />

health consequences in the months<br />

that follow.<br />

remover from your local pet<br />

shop or veterinary practice.<br />

Even on a short journey home,<br />

plants which are exposed to<br />

exaggerated heat inside a car or the<br />

scorching effect of sunlight travelling<br />

through the car glazing can be<br />

seriously damaged, so cover them<br />

up with something to decrease the<br />

risk. It is worth taking a few old<br />

newspapers with you when you go<br />

to the garden centre, as these make<br />

perfect temporary tents.<br />

Remember that most plants prefer<br />

fairly constant conditions, so try<br />

not to put them through too many<br />

changes in a short space of time.<br />

Ideally, take them from one area in<br />

the garden centre to somewhere<br />

similar in your garden, and keep<br />

any travelling during hot weather<br />

to a minimum. If they look at<br />

all damaged from their journey<br />

then give them a week or two to<br />

recuperate in dappled shade in a<br />

protected position in your garden.<br />

And don’t forget that when you<br />

plant anything new in your garden,<br />

if the weather is at all dry it is<br />

worth waiting until the evening<br />

or at least late afternoon before<br />

planting. Make sure that everything<br />

is kept well watered, as this will<br />

increase the chances of the plants<br />

establishing without too much<br />

distress.<br />

PETS<br />

Although other methods of removing ticks exist, tick<br />

removers allow you to twist and pull the tick from<br />

your dog, bringing the entire body away.<br />

Why are ticks dangerous to your pet?<br />

Ticks cause Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, in<br />

dogs, but signs of illness don’t commonly appear<br />

until several months after they have been bitten.<br />

Symptoms include:<br />

• High fever.<br />

• Loss of appetite.<br />

• Swelling of the joints.<br />

• Swollen lymph nodes.<br />

• Lethargy.<br />

Once diagnosed, a prolonged course of antibiotics<br />

can be used to fight the infection, but some dogs<br />

may continue to experience recurring symptoms<br />

throughout their life.<br />

HISTORY: Wedding Customs By Catherine Rose<br />

The Roman goddess Juno presided<br />

over marriage, the hearth and<br />

childbirth, and June remains a<br />

popular wedding month today. As<br />

wedding season begins, have you<br />

ever stopped to wonder where<br />

many of our modern-day marriage<br />

traditions started?<br />

Although diamond engagement<br />

rings were popularised in the 15th<br />

century by European nobility,<br />

particularly the Venetians, the<br />

tradition of giving a diamond engagement<br />

ring really took off in the<br />

late 19th century at the height of<br />

diamond mining in South Africa.<br />

The De Beers Diamond Company<br />

was responsible for the ‘a diamond<br />

lasts forever’ advertising campaign;<br />

this was so successful that<br />

by the 1940s every man was using<br />

a tidy sum of his hard-earned cash<br />

to buy his beloved a diamond ring<br />

to propose with. Today 80% of engagement<br />

rings are still diamonds.<br />

Wedding rings are depicted on<br />

ancient Egyptian papyrus scrolls.<br />

They are traditionally worn on<br />

the fourth finger of the left hand<br />

because the Romans believed this<br />

finger had a vein, the vena amoris,<br />

which was connected directly to<br />

the heart. However, its symbolism<br />

is not as romantic as it seems.<br />

The ring represented the groom’s<br />

wealth and formed part of the<br />

wedding contract to provide for<br />

and own his spouse. This is never<br />

more perfectly illustrated than in<br />

the case of the Roman bride who<br />

had a gold ring to wear in public<br />

and an iron one to wear at home<br />

while doing the chores.<br />

The Victorians are responsible for<br />

many of our modern customs.<br />

Queen Victoria started the trend<br />

for wearing a white wedding dress<br />

in 1840 (long a tradition in Japan).<br />

Before then women simply wore<br />

their best dress.<br />

Veils symbolised a bride’s virginity<br />

and humility before God, as well as<br />

showing she was saving her beauty<br />

for her husband (who would lift<br />

the veil when she arrived at the<br />

altar). But there was another more<br />

sinister reason.<br />

In the days when arranged marriages<br />

were common, it wasn’t<br />

unusual for the groom to have<br />

never laid eyes on his bride before.<br />

The veil was an effective way of<br />

ensuring he didn’t cut and run<br />

before she got to the altar! The<br />

Victorians turned the veil into a status<br />

symbol: the more wealthy and<br />

important you were, the longer the<br />

bride’s veil and train.<br />

Bridal bouquets were<br />

carried as a symbol of fertility and<br />

to hide unpleasant smells (the<br />

norm in ages when there was<br />

little sanitation). The custom of<br />

the bride throwing it to the crowd<br />

replaced one where guests would<br />

rip pieces off the hem of her gown<br />

for good luck.<br />

It was once even customary for the<br />

bridal party to follow the couple to<br />

their bedroom and watch the act<br />

of consummation. The throwing<br />

of the bride’s garter is symbolic<br />

of this (thankfully) long dead<br />

practice.<br />

The notion that the bride should<br />

wear ‘something old, new, borrowed<br />

and blue’ comes from an<br />

old English saying that ends ‘and<br />

a sixpence in your shoe’. It was<br />

based around superstition meant<br />

to bring the couple good luck and a<br />

happy marriage.<br />

‘Something old’ represents the<br />

bride’s past, ‘something new’ her<br />

future, ‘something borrowed’ an<br />

item lent by a married friend to<br />

inherit happiness and ‘something<br />

blue’ stood for purity, fidelity and<br />

love.<br />

The ‘sixpence in your shoe’ - a<br />

good luck token to ensure wealth,<br />

placed there by the bride’s father<br />

- has been lost over the years, possibly<br />

because it wasn’t comfortable<br />

for the bride but probably also due<br />

to decimalisation!<br />

During the ceremony, the groom<br />

stands on the right-hand side<br />

of the bride so that he can have<br />

his sword arm free to fight off<br />

other potential suitors. Historically,<br />

bridesmaids and groomsmen<br />

would dress identically to the bride<br />

and groom respectively to both<br />

‘fool evil spirits’ and to confuse<br />

would-be kidnappers of the bride<br />

(yes, in the days of rival tribes and<br />

warring families, bridal kidnap<br />

wasn’t uncommon). The role of<br />

these attendants was also to act as<br />

witnesses to the marriage.<br />

In many cultures, including High<br />

Church of England, the couple’s<br />

hands are either wrapped or bound<br />

together during the ceremony. This<br />

led to the phrase ‘tying the knot’.<br />

One of the most famous traditions,<br />

the wedding cake, also began<br />

in ancient Rome. A sweet bread<br />

made with nuts and dried fruit was<br />

broken over the bride’s head as<br />

a fertility charm. Wedding guests<br />

would be served handfuls of the<br />

nuts and dried fruits that were<br />

known as confetto. This was also<br />

thrown over the couple for good<br />

luck. Today, our confett is made of<br />

rice, petals and paper.<br />

The custom of cake at weddings<br />

continued into medieval times<br />

when they would be stacked to<br />

form a high tower. The bride and<br />

groom then had to kiss over the<br />

top without toppling it over; if they<br />

succeeded, a life of prosperity was<br />

assured and so the tiered wedding<br />

cake was born.<br />

Finally, the honeymoon, or ‘hony<br />

moone’ as it was known, dates<br />

from the 14th century and had<br />

nothing to do with honey. It was<br />

simply coined to describe the brief<br />

sweetness of that first month of<br />

marriage.<br />

Agent of Change<br />

It’s difficult to escape from the cultural<br />

phenomenon of James Bond. Even when the<br />

latest film isn’t gracing the local multiplex, one<br />

(or more) of the previous 24 movies will be on<br />

the television somewhere, and the papers and<br />

the rest of the media will be speculating as to the<br />

identity of the next actor to take up the role. The<br />

character first appeared in print in 1953, when<br />

Ian Fleming’s ‘Casino Royale’ was published, and<br />

though the author died in 1964, other authors<br />

have continued to feed the appetite of a public<br />

still hungry for the adventures of the spy, including<br />

Kingsley Amis, Sebastian Faulkes and most recently,<br />

Anthony Horowitz (of ‘Foyle’s War’ fame among<br />

other things).<br />

But he wasn’t the first adventurer to uphold the<br />

defence of the realm. There were men of action<br />

who fought for Queen and Country, or King and<br />

Country, long before 007 knocked back his first<br />

martini. Richard Hannay, hero of John Buchan’s<br />

‘The 39 Steps’ (three major movie versions plus TV<br />

and radio adaptations) and four more lesser-known<br />

stories (Including the unlikely, and frankly<br />

uninspiringly titled ‘The Island of Sheep’).<br />

Hugh ‘Bulldog’ Drummond, created by Herman<br />

‘Sapper’ McNeile, was an ex-WW I veteran with<br />

a taste for danger that ran to 19 books, 3 plays, a<br />

radio show and 21 films between 1922 and 1951.<br />

W.E. Johns gave us James ‘Biggles’ Bigglesworth,<br />

the air ace, for the first time in 1932 in a book called<br />

‘The White Fokker’ and continued for almost a<br />

hundred more daring stories of aerial adventure<br />

until the author’s death in 1968.<br />

Surely though, first and foremost of these pre-Bond<br />

men of action and derring-do was Dick Barton –<br />

Special Agent. He was, by the standards of the day,<br />

a sensation. The adventures of Captain Richard<br />

Barton MC, one-time commando, were broadcast<br />

daily on BBC’s Light Programme, the first drama to<br />

do so, in 1946. Going out at 6.45pm initially, before<br />

being moved to the earlier slot of 6.15pm, each<br />

show was fast-paced and just 15 minutes long.<br />

Barton, along with his sidekicks Jock Anderson<br />

and Snowy White, would fight crime, intrigue and<br />

espionage with just a hint of ‘tongue-in-cheek’<br />

before finding themselves in inescapable peril just<br />

before the show finished for the evening. And then,<br />

the following night, ‘with one bound, Dick was<br />

free!’ and they were off again. Norman Collins, the<br />

BBC producer who created Dick Barton, had caught<br />

the mood of the times and at its peak, every teatime<br />

show, just after the news, was listened to by<br />

over 15 million people. Barton was a national hero.<br />

Three movies were made. Schoolboys lapped up his<br />

exploits in vast numbers, so much so that a number<br />

of ‘rules’ were laid down that Barton scripts should<br />

not break, so as not to corrupt the malleable minds<br />

of minors. ‘No bad language’, ‘No drinking’,<br />

‘No lying’, ‘No cheating’ and definitely ‘No sex’,<br />

which saw Barton’s girlfriend ‘Jean’ written out<br />

early on.<br />

But in 1951, after 711 episodes, Barton found himself<br />

up against the one opponent he couldn’t escape.<br />

The BBC itself. Always uneasy with the excitable<br />

nature of the show, despite its success, they moved<br />

a new series, ‘The Archers’ into Dick Barton’s slot.<br />

The show was cancelled, the character not even<br />

getting a glorious fighting finish, just given his<br />

papers to be recalled to the forces. It seemed it was<br />

all over. There was a glimmer of hope when a TV<br />

series was produced in 1979, but it too fell by the<br />

wayside.<br />

Then, 1998. And the Warehouse Theatre in Croydon<br />

commissioned ‘Dick Barton – Special Agent’, a<br />

musical comedy accentuating all the glorious<br />

silliness of the era and the original show. This<br />

affectionate spoof by Phil Wilmott was a massive<br />

hit, and toured extensively in the UK and abroad.<br />

Wilmott and then Duncan Wisbey, Kit Benjamin<br />

and Philip Ives went on to create another eight<br />

‘episodes’ for the Warehouse, the last of which, the<br />

western-themed ‘A Fist Full of Barton’, debuted in<br />

December 2010.<br />

Since then however, seven years and no Dick. The<br />

Warehouse Theatre, maliciously sabotaged by<br />

Croydon Council, went dark in May 2012 with only a<br />

pale shadow of its former self limping along at the<br />

Fairfield before it too closed.<br />

Enter Theatre Workshop Coulsdon. They performed<br />

the original Phil Wilmott script in the open-air in<br />

2007 to critical acclaim and audience response.<br />

So their own Richard Lloyd has written a brand<br />

new episode. One in which Dick Barton is tasked<br />

with finding a missing heiress, only to find himself<br />

tangled in a web of intrigue that takes him from<br />

darkest Africa to Penge and threatens the very<br />

Empire itself! Comedy, music, thrills, SpamTM and<br />

fair quantity of dodgy double entendres see the<br />

legend continue.<br />

Move over Bond. Barton is back!<br />

The Stars of the New York Motor Show<br />

The Big Apple’s new car showcase took place in April and James Baggott reported from the<br />

show floor. It may be held in the city that never sleeps, but walk around the New York Motor<br />

Show’s tiny halls and very soon you may be in danger of drifting off. Thrilling and packed with<br />

big reveals this event was not, however, there were still a few new car unveils that could stave<br />

off unintentional narcolepsy – for a few minutes at least. Just like the country’s president, it’s<br />

a show that likes to flex its muscles, posture a little, but under the surface has very little real<br />

substance – and it’s dominated by the American manufacturers. Despite that, we managed to<br />

muscle our way past the smelly hot dog stalls and copious coffee shops to find six new models<br />

that caught our eye.<br />

Mercedes AMG GLC 63 & GLC 63 Coupe<br />

The only real European<br />

manufacturer to take the New<br />

York event seriously, Mercedes<br />

took the wraps off the car it’s<br />

billing as ‘perfectly at home<br />

off road or on the race track’.<br />

Featuring a 4.0-litre V8 with<br />

either 469bhp in standard guise, or 503bhp in ‘S’<br />

trim, it’s an SUV capable of hitting 60mph in just 3.9<br />

seconds. With a top speed of 155mph, the Germans<br />

say it’s a super sporty car with ‘everyday usability’.<br />

Prices are expected to start at around £65,000 with<br />

first deliveries in October.<br />

Jaguar F-Type 2.0-litre<br />

What’s that, a tiny 2.0-litre<br />

four cylinder in a hairy-chested<br />

sports car? It is indeed, but<br />

before you dismiss it out of<br />

hand, know this: small in cubic<br />

capacity it may be, but it’s<br />

still pushing out a not-soweedy<br />

296bhp. There’ll still<br />

be many that sneer in the face of such a diminutive<br />

lump making its way into Jaguar’s flagship, but the<br />

firm hope a 0-60mph time of 5.4 seconds, 155mph top<br />

speed and a 52kg weight reduction will be enough to<br />

see them temper their scowls. It’ll also bring the entry<br />

level price of an F-Type to £100 under £50k.<br />

Dodge SRT Challenger Demon<br />

Angry name? Check. Muscle<br />

car looks? Roger. Ridiculous<br />

and quite possibly unusable<br />

power output? Oh yes. Meet<br />

the 840bhp, Dodge SRT<br />

Challenger Demon – a car<br />

with so much horsepower<br />

that it can pull recordbreaking<br />

wheelies. The 6.2-litre HEMI-engined<br />

monster uses the Hellcat’s 707bhp lump and adds a<br />

bigger supercharger and increased boost pressure<br />

to result in an animal that can hit 60mph in just 2.3<br />

seconds. If that claim turns out to be true, it’ll put it<br />

on a par with a Bugatti Chiron. Bonkers.<br />

Infiniti QX80<br />

While the luxury arm of Nissan<br />

might be having a hard time in<br />

the UK, in the States it’s really<br />

rather successful – so much so<br />

that the brand feels a Range<br />

Rover rivalling concept is a<br />

good idea. The Infiniti QX80<br />

Monograph is currently billed as a ‘design study’, but<br />

the manufacturer says it signals its intent to enter the<br />

large SUV segment. Whether it’ll be made remains to<br />

be seen, but even if it does, the chances of you ever<br />

seeing one in the UK is really rather slim.<br />

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk<br />

In the seemingly ever-raging<br />

battle to produce the world’s<br />

most powerful SUV, Jeep has<br />

made a bold claim for the title<br />

with this – the 707bhp Jeep<br />

Grand Cherokee Trackhawk.<br />

Quite why it’s a title any<br />

manufacturer wishes to secure is beyond us, but the<br />

Americans have snapped it up nonetheless. Capable<br />

of 60mph in 3.5 seconds, a top speed of 180mph and<br />

a standing quarter mile in 11.6 seconds, this might just<br />

be a Jeep Cherokee that’s mildly acceptable to own.<br />

Toyota FT-4X<br />

Remember the days when<br />

you threw a shoebox full<br />

of Lego on the living floor<br />

and attempted to make<br />

something that resembled<br />

a car? Well, that appears<br />

to be exactly how Toyota’s<br />

designers created their latest FT-4X concept car. Half<br />

grown-up Tonka toy, half fridge freezer, the offroader’s<br />

looks can kindly be described as ‘bold’. The<br />

maker says it hints at what the replacement for its<br />

equally visually-challenging, American-only FJ Cruiser<br />

could look like, if it ever gets the nod.<br />

Needing some peace<br />

It seems we are in a particularly challenging and<br />

difficult time as a nation. Following a number of<br />

acts of terrorism in Manchester and London; we<br />

are left reeling at the horror of what mankind is<br />

capable of doing and fearful for the future. The<br />

addition of an unstable political environment<br />

with both the surprise election result and the<br />

commencement of the negotiations for Brexit Perhaps at first it seems a little insensitive – that we<br />

does little to assuage concerns. The fire at Grenfell must rejoice and not be anxious; however what is<br />

‘Space exploration is a waste of money’ proposed<br />

Nick Jupp, for the Society’s June debate. How do<br />

the billions of dollars spent every year by space<br />

agencies benefit us? Each shuttle flight costs $500-<br />

700 million and recent NASA estimates put the cost<br />

of the 2010 shuttle program at $209 billion. Apart<br />

from Velcro, what has this scientific research given<br />

us? Should we not ask our great scientific minds<br />

to solve humanity’s pressing problems? Nick said<br />

that technology must be used to directly benefit the<br />

many people who are starving, poor, ill. We should<br />

focus on our own planet before exploring others.<br />

The post-it note, as useful as Velcro, was invented<br />

by 3M without spending billions sending rockets<br />

to Mars – unlike the zero-gravity pen, the everyday<br />

relevance of which is questionable. We have yet to<br />

fully explore our own planet – the seabed around<br />

volcanoes, the Antarctic. While spending billions on<br />

space exploration, starting as a dangerous political<br />

and military race between the USA and USSR, we are<br />

facing global warming and a major economic crisis.<br />

Yet NASA lost count of its budget after its first year’s<br />

first billion dollars! Space research billions could be<br />

spent on resolving our resource and climate<br />

difficulties – there would be no need to migrate and<br />

destroy another world. The billions spent on space<br />

exploration are best allocated to fixing our own<br />

planet, which we are not maintaining well. Nick<br />

asked the Society to imagine abandoning a<br />

neglected house and paying an estate agent who has<br />

promised to find an expensive new home in a much<br />

better area – promises that are never fulfilled, but<br />

which demand more and more funds. In fact, the<br />

space programme is a money pit. The $278 million<br />

Orbiting Carbon Observatory, designed to study<br />

global warming, crashed into the Pacific; George<br />

Bush’s $400 billion Mars project was a space race<br />

against the Chinese. Stephen Hawking believes<br />

colonising other planets will save the human race,<br />

but what other planets? Life on Mars is not<br />

sustainable and other galaxies are 4,000 years away.<br />

We must pull the plug on this meaningless science<br />

and remember the shrewd observation of Dwight<br />

Eisenhower when he vetoed Apollo.<br />

‘Every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft<br />

from those who hunger and are not fed, those who<br />

are cold and not clothed’.<br />

Opposer Ian Payne opened by saying that<br />

most scientific ‘ologies’ could be considered<br />

a waste of money. After all, they don’t benefit<br />

people’s daily life, but arguably take away vital funds<br />

for health services, poverty, pensions. Ian showed<br />

that as, through the ages, society became more<br />

stable and organised, so the role of the philosopher<br />

led to the development of ideas about government,<br />

the structure of nature, particle physics, astronomy.<br />

Two thousand years of technological advance mean<br />

we now have indispensable telephones, food<br />

processing, railways, the internet. There is the<br />

downside of weapons’ development and<br />

environmental destruction. Our planet and our<br />

survival are under serious threat from global<br />

warming, religious wars, raw material and food<br />

shortages. Furthermore, the era of colonisation,<br />

with cheap materials, labour and transport is<br />

drawing to a close. Perhaps, said Ian, Malthus was<br />

right, after all! Should we then stop our expensive<br />

research programmes? We need more research,<br />

argued Ian, into harnessing the sun’s energy. Space<br />

exploration, continued Ian, covers a variety of<br />

disciplines, from cosmology to manned flights; the<br />

basic subject, astronomy, has led to a wider<br />

understanding of the universe, for example, the<br />

discovery of microwave background radiation left<br />

from the ‘Big Bang’. Cosmology studies the finer<br />

structures of the universe, but as yet we cannot see<br />

applications for string theory or loop quantum<br />

gravity. Should we pull this research that may be<br />

crucial in the future? Theories and experiments are<br />

part of the human psyche – and ensure mankind’s<br />

continuing advance. Ian said that space<br />

exploration is about more than space flights. The<br />

Hubble telescope is one of many optical, radio and<br />

deep underground instruments looking for<br />

particles that pass through the Earth. In 2015, the<br />

New Horizons probe discovered an active body at<br />

the edge of our universe where solid ice mountains<br />

and nitrogen ice glaciers mimic our own terrain.<br />

What we have gleaned from this most recent of<br />

many decades of probes to other planets is now<br />

part of our school curriculum. Britain’s spends £322<br />

million a year on space research – about three<br />

thousandths of the NHS budget. NASA’s annual<br />

budget is $19.5 billion, $5.5 billion on its science<br />

budget. This represents less than $15 per American<br />

a year – hardly enough to feed the world’s starving<br />

millions. Ian reminded us how space exploration<br />

can benefit life on earth, for example, artificial limbs,<br />

scratch-resistant lenses, aircraft anti-icing systems,<br />

freeze drying and cordless vacuums.<br />

Finally, said Ian, space exploration may help us<br />

answer questions like:<br />

How does the universe work? Are we alone?<br />

The motion was lost by 5 votes to 4, with 1<br />

abstention and with the Chair casting the deciding<br />

vote for the opposer.<br />

Coulsdon Centre on <strong>July</strong> 3rd, at 8 p.m., when<br />

Treasurer Andrew Carver will propose that ‘Prisoners<br />

and the unemployed should undertake useful<br />

community employment’ and<br />

Double-jointed: Blessing or a curse?<br />

The phrase ‘double-jointed’ can often bring to mind that one person we all knew at school<br />

who was ultra-flexible and could contort their body parts to make everyone in the playground<br />

feel queasy. But, although they may have seemed like a unique specimen, in fact 20 percent<br />

of adults show some sort of double-jointed ability or joint hypermobility, and while this may<br />

sound like the ultimate party trick it can actually come with some painful side-effects.<br />

What causes joint hypermobility?<br />

Joint hypermobility is often hereditary, with one of the main causes thought to be genetically<br />

determined by changes to a type of protein in the body called collagen.<br />

Collagen is found throughout the body – in the skin, muscles, ligaments, tendons, blood vessels<br />

and discs in the spine. When it is weaker than it should be, it can cause the tissues in the<br />

body to become fragile, which in turn can make ligaments and joints loose and stretchy. And<br />

therefore able to extend further than usual.<br />

What are the symptoms?<br />

Some of the most common symptoms of joint hypermobility, include:<br />

• Pain in the joints at the end of the day and after physical activity<br />

• Clicking joints<br />

• Bruises easily<br />

• Stretch marks or scarring of the skin<br />

• Recurrent strains or sprains<br />

• Digestive problems such as irritable bowel or constipation<br />

• Dizziness and fainting<br />

• Back and neck pain<br />

• Fatigue<br />

• Night pains which disrupt sleep<br />

• Poor Co-ordination<br />

What can I do to alleviate the pain?<br />

There are some self-help measures for joint hypermobility and these include:<br />

• maintaining a healthy diet and weight; this will help improve joint strength and<br />

reduce the strain on them<br />

• staying active, but sticking to low impact exercises such as swimming or cycling to<br />

reduce strain on joints<br />

• wearing comfortable and supportive footwear to support ankles<br />

• applying heat – such as a hot water bottle or heat-rub cream – to soothe sore joints<br />

Sticky Barbecue Chicken Wings<br />

Serves 4<br />

Ready in 50 minutes<br />

Chicken wings are a great<br />

budget buy and perfect for a<br />

TV dinner or speedy supper.<br />

Serve with a home-made<br />

coleslaw or rice salad<br />

for a more<br />

substantial<br />

meal.<br />

Ingredients:<br />

• 1 kg chicken wings<br />

• 8tbsp tomato ketchup<br />

• 2tbsp Worcestershire sauce<br />

• 3tbsp smooth mango chutney<br />

• 2tsp Dijon mustard<br />

• 1tbsp sunflower oil<br />

FOR THE DIP<br />

• 150ml soured cream<br />

• 2 spring onions, trimmed and<br />

finely chopped<br />

• 1tbsp fresh snipped chives<br />

TIP<br />

You can cook the wings on a hot<br />

barbecue for an al fresco supper.<br />

It’s best to cook them in the<br />

oven for the first 15 minutes then<br />

glaze and just place them on the<br />

barbecue for the last 15-20 minutes<br />

of cooking time.<br />

Preheat the oven to 200C, 180 fan,<br />

gas 6. Place the wings on a metal rack<br />

set over a roasting tin and roast in the<br />

preheated oven for 15 minutes.<br />

Meanwhile, make the sticky glaze<br />

by mixing together the ketchup,<br />

Worcestershire sauce, mango chutney,<br />

mustard and oil in a small bowl. Season<br />

with salt and freshly ground black<br />

pepper.<br />

Remove the roasting tin from the oven<br />

and liberally brush the glaze all over the<br />

chicken wings.<br />

Return the roasting tin to the oven<br />

and roast the wings for a further 15-20<br />

minutes until the wings are golden<br />

brown and slightly charred in places.<br />

Mix together the dip ingredients in<br />

a small bowl. Serve with the chicken<br />

wings.<br />

MISSION TO NEPAL<br />

School building volunteer<br />

Swapping the safety, certainty, and relative<br />

comfort of your day job in a bank in Coulsdon,<br />

for the challenge of helping build a school in<br />

an earthquake-torn remote Nepalese village<br />

in sight of Mt. Everest, is not an everyday<br />

occurrence. A challenge that nevertheless<br />

drew the manager at Santander in Brighton<br />

Road Coulsdon to apply to be one of forty<br />

bank employees to head off in October to<br />

help build an earthquake-proof school<br />

northwest of Kathmandu, under the auspices<br />

of the Pahar Trust – the Nepal agency<br />

specialising in school building projects.<br />

Joanne Waggott has been raising<br />

money for local community<br />

causes over several years –<br />

evidenced by collecting boxes,<br />

books, toys, and cakes regularly<br />

seen by customers. Causes such<br />

as Tadworth children’s Trust, The<br />

Diamond disabled riding centre,<br />

Purley Cancer Help Centre, and<br />

the Royal Marsden. A precondition for Jo’s<br />

selection to go to Nepal was raising £2K this<br />

last year for Santander’s current commitment<br />

to Barnardo’s and Age UK. Well exceeded.<br />

Nepal’s earthquake epicentre included the<br />

cities of Pokhara and Kathmandu – the twin<br />

most populated places in the country housing<br />

between them 1.2m people; five percent of<br />

Nepal’s 26m people. The Pokhara region has<br />

also some very remote villages high in the<br />

foothills of Mt. Everest, numbers of which<br />

have also been badly affected. Mauja is one<br />

such. This is where Jo and the team will be<br />

based. They will be mixing concrete, humping<br />

building materials, and digging foundations.<br />

That basic. Meantime camping out for<br />

several nights. In the process doubtless<br />

learning how people in Nepal live their lives.<br />

At high altitudes – the village is 5,000 ft.<br />

above sea level - Jo is having to prepare<br />

herself by a regime of weight-training and<br />

treadmill work. She finds that no real<br />

problem – a tough Yorkshire lass holding<br />

school records for long distance running.<br />

Most of her costs in going she has to meet<br />

herself.<br />

Mauja (pronounced Moser) is one of 49<br />

villages in the Kaski district of Nepal. Pokhara<br />

is its main centre. Mauja is about ten miles<br />

further north, in very hilly terrain.<br />

Nepal’s location between India and China<br />

means within quite small distances the<br />

climate goes from subtropical to alpine to<br />

nival. Annapauna and Everest loom over<br />

everything. While Mauja village has less than<br />

3,000 inhabitants, the population density of<br />

Nepal as a whole is surprisingly high – 204<br />

pp sq. km, not dissimilar to Italy and the UK.<br />

While urbanisation is moving apace, the<br />

country remains one of the most rural in<br />

the world ( 83 percent dependent on basic<br />

agriculture) – standing alongside Rwanda,<br />

Ethiopia and Uganda. And with this goes low<br />

purchasing power – one of the lowest GDP<br />

per head anywhere. Literacy has improved<br />

markedly in recent years but it is still too low<br />

in remote villages – affecting over a thousand<br />

people in Mauji. Rebuilding its school will<br />

shape the lives of 480 young people.<br />

The country nevertheless has a thriving<br />

tourist industry, centred on Pokhara. Not just<br />

for trekkers on the Annapauna circuit, but<br />

for historic temples and stunning scenery.<br />

You can get a decent room with bath even<br />

in Pokhara for £5 a night. Media coverage of<br />

the 2015 earthquake showed many tourists<br />

caught up in the disaster. The full death toll<br />

was over 9,000 people, with thousands of<br />

others injured and displaced; devastation not<br />

just from the ‘quake but rockfalls, landslides<br />

and avalanches. This is the context for the<br />

programme of school building that the Trust is<br />

engaged in. The Santander team go to Nepal<br />

in early October.<br />

I recently inherited several boxes<br />

of family photographs, with<br />

images dating from Victorian times<br />

- when photography was in its infancy<br />

- right up to the first decade<br />

of the new millennium.<br />

Some pictures were stored carefully<br />

in albums but others were<br />

roughly crammed into folders and<br />

envelopes. Unsurprisingly, some<br />

of the older items were beginning<br />

to show signs of deterioration,<br />

including rips, stains and tiny spots<br />

of mould. While I felt very privileged<br />

to be the keeper of this important<br />

archive, it was a reminder<br />

that my own family snaps and VHS<br />

tapes were packed in the loft: all in<br />

danger of going the same way as<br />

my newly-acquired collection.<br />

After taking stock of all this precious<br />

material - which documented<br />

over 100 years of my family’s<br />

history - it occurred to me that I<br />

had a responsibility to preserve it<br />

for future generations.<br />

PRESERVING FAMILY PHOTO-<br />

GRAPHS<br />

When it comes to the future of<br />

a family photo collection you<br />

are faced with a straightforward<br />

choice: either divide the photographs<br />

up between a select group<br />

of relatives, or digitise the entire<br />

archive so it can be enjoyed by<br />

everyone.<br />

While the first option is quick and<br />

simple, it’s not entirely satisfactory.<br />

Unless the collection includes<br />

duplicate images, no-one will hold<br />

a complete set of family photos.<br />

There is also a chance that in future<br />

someone will throw out their<br />

part of the collection because they<br />

no longer have space to keep it.<br />

Converting hard copy photos to<br />

digital images may involve a lot<br />

of work, but it ensures that the<br />

archive will be passed on from<br />

generation to generation. Restoring<br />

and digitising photographic images<br />

can also become an enjoyable<br />

hobby: there’s great satisfaction in<br />

Hobbies<br />

transforming faded, mould-spotted<br />

and torn pictures into images<br />

that look as fresh as the day they<br />

emerged from the darkroom.<br />

If you decide to digitise, you will<br />

need a computer with enough disk<br />

space to store the photographic<br />

files you are creating. You’ll also<br />

need some kind of photo editing<br />

software. According to the magazine<br />

What Digital Camera?, there<br />

are several good image manipulation<br />

packages that are completely<br />

free to download. Top of their<br />

list is the oddly-named Gimp,<br />

which works like a basic version<br />

of the industry-standard software<br />

Photoshop. Gimp allows you to<br />

do everything from cropping and<br />

resizing to altering exposure and<br />

colour balance. It also has the<br />

same invaluable ‘clone tool’ as<br />

Photoshop, which allows you to<br />

heal the spoiled parts of a photo<br />

by copying an undamaged area<br />

over the damaged spot.<br />

CONVERTING YOUR SLIDES<br />

During the 1960s and 70s a craze<br />

for slide photography meant that<br />

many amateur snappers temporarily<br />

stopped taking conventional<br />

photos. If you have boxes of slides<br />

that you need to convert to digital<br />

files, you will need an additional<br />

piece of equipment. Slide scanners<br />

start at around £16 (for a device<br />

that can be used together with a<br />

smartphone), while standalone<br />

scanners can cost up to £125.<br />

VHS VIDEOS TO DVD<br />

I had a shock recently when<br />

someone told me that analogue<br />

videos and home movies are<br />

susceptible to the same degradation<br />

as photographic slides, prints<br />

and negatives. VHS tapes, Hi8 and<br />

Video8 are magnetic media: as the<br />

magnetic particles gradually lose<br />

their charge, the tape deteriorates.<br />

you store your tapes, you can<br />

expect at least a 20% reduction in<br />

The easiest way to convert videos<br />

to DVDs is to connect a video-cassette<br />

recorder (VCR) to a PC via an<br />

analogue-to-digital video capture<br />

device. You’ll need to record the<br />

VHS video to your PC’s hard drive<br />

and then write the recorded video<br />

to DVD, using the DVD writer<br />

installed on your PC. Be warned,<br />

however, that VCRs are slowly<br />

becoming obsolete, so if you have<br />

a large number of VHS tapes to<br />

convert and don’t already have a<br />

VCR, this may be a good time to<br />

buy one. A medium-priced video<br />

capture device costs between £25<br />

and £50, while a VCR costs from<br />

£30 upwards (refurbished models<br />

may cost less).<br />

If you only have a few tapes to<br />

convert, you might consider using<br />

a professional service. It’s worth<br />

checking online for the best deal:<br />

while web-based conversion<br />

specialists such as digitalconverters.co.uk<br />

typically charge under<br />

ten pounds for a single VHS or Hi8<br />

tape.<br />

Once your family photos and<br />

videos have been converted into<br />

a longer-lasting format, the next<br />

step will be deciding the best way<br />

to share them. You could burn<br />

them to DVD and give them out to<br />

family members, upload them to a<br />

cloud file-sharing system or create<br />

a family website. Be aware that if<br />

you choose cloud or web-hosting<br />

services to house your digital files,<br />

you may end up paying an annual<br />

fee.<br />

Thanks to my inherited collection,<br />

digitising family images now occupies<br />

much of my spare time, and<br />

I’ve even started to help friends<br />

who want family photos restored.<br />

It’s rewarding to know that, once<br />

converted to a digital format,<br />

these important visual records will<br />

go on giving pleasure far into the<br />

future.

Bird’s Eye View - <strong>July</strong><br />

While the breeding season may be over for<br />

some birds others will be looking forward to<br />

having a second brood, while a few are late<br />

breeders.<br />

Swifts are one species that will hopefully have<br />

young on the wing and by mid-<strong>July</strong> you may<br />

be lucky enough to see large flocks flying<br />

around near your home as they gather<br />

together ready to migrate back to Africa for<br />

our winter. Most will have gone by the end<br />

of the month. For their young this will be the<br />

first time on the wing and they may remain<br />

flying for the whole of the next two years<br />

until they set up a nest of their own to breed.<br />

During the whole of that period they will feed<br />

and sleep on the wing!<br />

One late breeder we should see in Croydon is<br />

Tufted Duck. Mute Swans, Canada Geese and<br />

Mallards have already had broods of young<br />

by late May/early June, but the Tufties only<br />

start nesting later in June with the young<br />

not appearing until <strong>July</strong>. Last year a pair bred<br />

at Waddon Ponds for the first time and it is<br />

worth looking out for them at any of our larger<br />

bodies of water. Another late breeder is the<br />

Hobby; a rare bird of prey that feeds<br />

on butterflies, dragonflies and House Martins<br />

and often times breeding so that their young<br />

hatch when the less experienced young martins<br />

are on the wing.<br />

Fake News<br />

“The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in<br />

people who are trustworthy.” Proverbs 12:22<br />

There has been considerable controversy in<br />

the media over what is known as ‘fake news.’<br />

We seem to live in a world that makes every<br />

effort to avoid using words that accurately<br />

describe a subject—a spade is no longer a<br />

spade. We soften the impact of certain words<br />

in order to dilute their meaning.<br />

The expression ‘fake news’ is a case in point.<br />

Fabrication, whether it be in a newspaper,<br />

television programme or gossip on the street<br />

corner, is quite simply a lie. It is a complete<br />

untruth—a falsehood.<br />

It is a clear indication of how far we, society,<br />

have moved from Christian morality, that we<br />

even have discussions as to what to do about it.<br />

God leaves us in no shadow of doubt as to how<br />

He handles lies. Psalm 101:7 tells us, “No one<br />

who practices deceit will dwell in my house; no<br />

one who speaks falsely will stand in my<br />

presence.” No softening approach there!<br />

Lies hurt people, that is the bottom line, God<br />

says don’t do it. Lies destroy lives—trust is<br />

broken, doubt and suspicion prevail.<br />

Our edict is found in Philippians 4:8 “whatever<br />

is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right,<br />

whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever<br />

is admirable—if anything is excellent or<br />

praiseworthy—think about such things.”<br />

Some journalists and pundits have yet to learn<br />

the merits of truth. Let us look forward to the<br />

day when they will rue their ‘fake news’ stories<br />

and turn their pen toward God.<br />

Prayer: Father, we ask forgiveness for our<br />

errant ways and ask for your help in guarding<br />

our tongues that we may use them to please<br />

you and you alone. Amen.<br />
