Carlton Avery Instrument Technician, Sasol “Working for a good company with good people makes me want to come to work every day with a smile on my face.” Sasol is building an $11 billion, world-scale petrochemical complex adjacent to its existing facility in Calcasieu Parish near Westlake. The facility will include an ethane cracker, six new downstream derivative plants and associated utilities and infrastructure. It will roughly triple Sasol’s chemical production capacity in the United States and increase its U.S. employee base by about 50 percent. As of March 2017, the project was about 68 percent complete. It is expected to begin operations in 2018/2019. The project is creating hundreds of new jobs, generating business for many local companies and making a positive impact on the local community. ... local careers Sasol hired 400 of the more than 500 new, full-time positions, ranging from engineers to operators to accountants, chemists, laboratory technicians and others. About 87 percent of those new employees are Louisiana residents, the majority from Calcasieu Parish. Sasol’s project will also generate hundreds of indirect jobs. Local businesses doing work for or providing services to Sasol are expanding and hiring new people to accommodate the increase in activity. The project contracted with major Louisiana construction contractors representing more than $3.5 billion. Additionally, Sasol has also spent nearly $450 million with Louisiana suppliers, much of which was with Calcasieu Parish businesses. As of 2017, Sasol has already paid $108.5 million in state taxes and $90 million in local taxes.
