them as they transition to college life and
the workplace. Zeta Psi Omega members
are known for their creativity and ability
to think outside the box, yet still plan
effective programs on a limited budget.
“Being awarded this grant
has truly been a blessing. The
grant funding combined with the
hard work and dedication of Zeta
Psi Omega members serves as a
catalyst in preparing and molding
the minds of the next generation,”
says Washington.
This year’s program consisted of 22
students. Students are selected from
an all call selection and search process
which includes, a mandatory 2.5 GPA
school and community involvement,
as well as letters of recommendation.
The class makeup is representative
of students throughout the 5 parish
area. The ASCEND students are guided
through the 6 month program by trained
members of the Zeta Psi Omega Chapter.
The program begins in January and ends
in June.

“The major component of
the program is comprised of
activities related to STEM (Science
Technology Engineering and
Math) and Alpha Kappa Alpha’s
Target 5 initiative UNA/USA
Global Classroom. Other monthly
activities include cultural and
community service, engagement,
job skills exploration, educational
preparation and fieldtrips,” says
Washington.
Applications for the 2018 ASCEND
program will be available October 1,
2017. Applications may be obtained
through high school counselors or

ASCEND is designed to meet the needs of 9th -12th grade male and female students.
Planning and selection for the program begins in August of each calendar year.
